When Swift performed at the CMA'a with Vince Gill and Alison Krauss she was singing sharp. It seems any time she's away from her own FOH guy there's issues with her singing. CMAs 2010: Every singer was flat by about 25 cents or more. The probably was the monitor engineer. This can be caused by feeding back too many effects or having a time delay in the feeds going to the monitor board before the sends. Alls I know is that when EVERY singer is off-key, the problem is with the monitors. I saw Dolly Parton perform once and knew the in-ears were causing pitch perception difficulties, and she ripped them out and got back on key. And DP reportedly has the best pitch of any well-known singer around. In Taylor's defense, it may have very well been a horrible monitor mix.

Swift can't be that bad - she must not be hearing herself properly. A problem with her in-ear monitor maybe? I mean - she's too consistently out of tune ..i.e. by the same # of cents.. Can she hear herself properly in the studio? Compare this to say...Dolly Parton, man have we slid culturally, how is supreme talent losing out to the soulless glorification of mediocre frauds? To be fair, this was a guide vocal, wasn't it? And tonycamphd how did you get 5300 posts in? Do you live on this forum?

Well, i guess the vid is authorized before published, and sorry, she has a weak voice. Not as in "weak but nice". No natural vibrato or tremolo, not secure in tune, not what you probably would book as a studio singer except for a big name. Correct me if i'm wrong...but that's what i hear. You find a handful of more talented singers in every small city if you look around a bit carefully... But maybe it's just me and a personal antipathy.

That video of Taylor and Stevie singing Rhiannon posted above...
somethings wrong there, she is way out when singing Rhainnon, and still not great, but not that bad doing here own song.
I really feel for her in that instance.
Whats the old monitors rule "if they are flat give em more, or if they are sharp give em less?" or vice versa.
Like a lot of us, i do a lot of live singing, around 80 songs a week probably on average... good days and bad days... the only thing, my bad days aren't on national TV.
Man, I have had some horrendous things happen in the monitors whilst singing in front of crowds at festivals and places like that.. you just gotta keep your game face on and do your best.
I am not saying she is a great or shit singer, I am just saying, I empathise with getting a crappy monitor mix or it going south halfway through a performance...
btw
Stevie Nicks, man in the 70s her and Linda Rondstadt were just ..... goddess's to me.. beautiful both of them and fantastic singers...
cheers

As for the monitoring: Stevie didn't have any problem with the monitoring. It's possible she paid more attention, but I think it's more plausible that she is an infinitely better singer than young Swift who needs to work hard on many levels to be improve. I think it is testimony to the power of auto tune that she has won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance. I doubt without auto tune she could ever beat out people like Gretchen Wilson, who sat in a chair in my Nashville house and performed a flawless one take performance of a demo song I wrote. Not auto tune needed.

Did you hear the bit of the studio footage? It's her session, she's paying for, and they treat her like she's not even in Middle School. She asks them if they like the song and she gets a high 5. If I had an 8 year old son and he wrote a song, I'd give him a high 5.
"Hey Stevie Nicks, great tune buddy! HAI FIVE!"
On another note: I've met more than one live engineer who gave a really snotty singer a feed of their voice pitched +20 cents. Not nice, wouldn't do it myself, but would always be wary of the engineer who might!

I admit i did not even watch it fully. Both vids. Now i did. "The bridge is like ... in the heat of the battle - it's the turning point." Uhumm, c'mon, really? (Her face is saying "Yeay! Strike! I made a metaphor.") Hilarious. I start to feel pity for her...and will stop bashing right now...

She has to know how to communicate to her monitor mixer, if the guy behind the board has no idea what she wants he can't do it. Well, obviously she doesn't realize she's out of tune - so it may not be a matter of her not communicating - It may be a case of the FOH guy falling asleep behind the wheel. Jcoutu? ..any thoughts on this? What's weird is I don't see Ms. Nicks getting squeamish. I know I would be ..maybe she's just too professional to show it on stage, but at least a quick glance at the FOH engineer is in order?? Then again, maybe it's that I'm in denial and you all are right - today's pop stars can't sing in tune. Small venues with just wedges running vocals and maybe keys/guitars/horns, quick glance is usually all it takes. If she's got a full in ear mix going on, a quick glance won't accomplish much. There are just too many variables with a full in ear mix. When the in ears are right, they're a godsend, but when they're wrong, they're a total clusterF.

Exactly and at festivals and one offs the variables are exponential, now the Software Danny Abelson and some other guys developed that let's your convert your Snapshots and setup s for the Highend digital boards makes things simpler but its still anything but fun!

DP here, so the built in tuning. It's really good and fairly easy to manipulate. I don't tune everything, usually hit the high spots only after comping, if that. Lotsa talent....ain't. No # of takes would get everything right on most 'local talent'.

Has anyone played around with elastic pitch and time in the new pt yet? My buddy opted for samplitude a few years ago based on that feature alone.

So.. I've been using melodyne for a while now..
And it's one buggy sucker. Crashes all the time, usually right after a transfer or a tempo change. Forums are full of people complaining about the crashes on all DAWs and complaining that the company simply tells them it's user error when they do complain loud enough..
But it works pretty well apart from it being majorly hard to use compared to all of it's competitors.
I kinda wish I had spent more time looking and testing other programs out.

I haven't had any problems with it either, and I've been using it for many years. I'm currently on Cubase 8 64-bit on W7.

I have used Melodyne for years without a single crash. Works great, easy to use and does exactly what I want. I could even retune an out-of-tune guitar string that no one noticed during recording. I'm glad I didn't waste my time testing other programs out.

It definitely can crash on a session where it's running via Rewire. I think the problem is usually a sync issue.
Anyone else running it 32 bit, VST?

I must be the last holdout who only uses manual tuning instead of auto-tuning. But levon 's assertion about being able to tune one out of tune guitar string is EXTREMELY compelling!
