I am contemplating doing new studio furniture...
I have had the same setup since 94
Would love to see some photos of current desk workstations that have 19" racks built in especially those of you with a small mixer.
Ergonomics is a tricky thing and seeing these will spark lots of ideas in my feeble brain
cheers

Here's a shot of my current desk. My needs have changed since I built it years ago but I designed it for the gear I was using at the time and in the near future. The center section is removable in case I ever wanted to put a mixer of control surface between the two racks. I'm pretty much all ITB now and my mixer is only a means of routing and monitoring my synth gear so it sits off to the side. I'm getting ready to move to a new house so this setup will more than likely get a drastic facelift when I have the time to build something new. Here's a much older photo right after I finished it up.

If I had it to do over again I'd do a simple desk for a controller/mixer/MIDI keyboard, separate monitor stands, and something like these Sterling racks to the left or right (or both in a U shape). Set it up so it would be an easy reach not far out of the sweet spot. Just depends on your setup, space, needs, etc. Come to think of it, I'd put a flat top on that Sterling rack and stick some caters on it. Always need a flat surface to pile more stuff on. In my current setup, I do like having my interface right under the PC monitor. That way volume control, headphones, etc. are front and center. Anyway, just thinking out loud a bit. Interested to see how others set up their space.

Not current pictures (always adding gear, like us all), but gives the general idea...

I was just talking to a guy who had a bunch of racks like these built, His problem was how big the actual foot print was and the pain in the ass they were to wire.

Thanks for those guys... Here is what I currently have... It works really well ergonomically.. the desk is just getting long in the tooth, been pulled apart and re assembled to many times... I may even end up building something very similar... The outboard to the left, the heavy stuff is on a bookcase I made, and the delta is propped up on another bookcase on its side for the moment.... cheers Wiz

I envy those who are living in america... here in NZ it's nearly impossible to buy quality studio furniture...

This is a workstation I built. I drew up the plans, bought and cut the wood, assembled, and painted. I use this room for V/Os, music beds and mixing. There's a 2 -12" sub in the middle bottom. Attachment Deleted

...about 95% of my sessions are strictly vocal tracking, so my outboard gear consists primarily of a small selection of good quality preamps/compressors...essentially a spare (small) bedroom, of which I spend an unholy amount of my time in...there's another desk to the left (not pictured) that houses my office computer and backup drives...trying the make the best of limited real estate... Not great pictures, but here are some relatively recent ones. I need to clean up really well and get some more professional pics for the FB/website. I also made the desk for the mixer and the racks for the gear.

I spent many hours planning my setup. The console and cooling are huge power consumers, like 8-10 kW and close to $1000/month, so I'm only powering it up when mixing. So to be able to switch between OTB-ITB easily I got the Avocet, and never really use the console's monitor section possibilities. Ergonomics is a big issue for me so mounting the Avocet and DAW monitor into the console was a key thing. My body doesn't seem to complain too much still after 7-8 years so it's working great. I bought the console used from Harrison and after signing the order they offered a larger frame at no extra charge 'if I'd need to expand in the future'. I could expand to 96ch already so I said h*ll no, but asked if I could get this larger frame with four blank panels in the center to make room for the DAW monitor. I then made a simple drawing and had a local workshop weld the monitor mount for like $50. Probably the cheapest major LFC customization on the planet One of the coolest customizations is almost invisible. The Avocet only has a talkback mic input (no built in mic) so I had a tech drill a small hole into one of the empty panels above the monitor and mount an electret mic, which is getting it's 5V power from the Avocet's internal board. The tech preferred a closed circuit and not powering the mic from another source to avoid interference. So we consulted Scott @ Crane Song and though the warranty got void we got thumbs up and directions on where to get the 5V. Attachments:

Thanks wiz. I see now that my post is probably a bit misplaced as you wanted input for a possible new bench/desk. Sorry for that. So, what stuff do you feel you need to have in center, I mean really center, between the speakers? DAW monitor, computer keyboard, the Delta, a keyboard?*** bentley nailed that in his setup. That was more or less how I had my stuff before getting the big console, but I also managed to get a Yamaha 02r squeezed in below the DAW monitor. I'm a keyboard player so I needed the keyboard, computer keyboard, mixer and DAW monitor in the center, arranged in an ergonomical way. Gives a really good workflow. I miss the space for a keyboard nowadays. Have to set it up each time I need it. *** or are you always a keyboard slaughter? I'm a bit torn seeing those innards on your front wall Good diffusor?

Attachment Deleted I went with a Sterling Modular set up a while back and like the ergonomics. I has a lot of rack space below the desk and my wife likes the clean look which helps. Not sure if I would go this route today because their desks have gotten really pricey.

Attachment Deleted The first pic is the day we put it together and the others are as I filled it with gear. The pic with Jim Lauderdale ended up being a Sweetwater ad for Mojave Audio. The last pic is from the recent Capi party we hosted. I love days like these, when each of these pics were taken. Sadly, with the dimensions of the room, its hard to get a clear pic of the whole set up. I love the ergonomics of being able to reach everything and not leave mix position. R

R Thanks Randgethat first photo is uber helpful. I really like that setup , in some ways its quite similar in ergonomics to what I have and what I like... I need to keep my right hand side free, cause thats where my door is.. but I really like this. Thanks everyone for posting these, I know its a pain to go to the trouble of posting photos, when you have to put them on a photo hosting site and do the whole link thing... I really appreciate it cheers Wiz
