Bill Bradley has a KM84 up on his site. $1350 but maybe he will come down a bit JohnkennIf he's looked it over and freshened it up, that's definitely a fair price.

I'll take the KM84 taste test challenge. Somebody loan Kennedy one and we will do a shoot out. And I'll actually play the same thing. With so many variables involved I simply have to hear for myself which mic is better because the gear may have a wide quality swing but so do the ears. One mans nirvana is another mans hell. to be honest, the file dr bill posted sounds bandpassed to me, it's a cool sound if thats what you're going for, but if it's a representation of an KM84's fidelity? i'm not impressed.

yeah...muuuuch nicer. I had been using a modded C5, but I took it in to doctor Sinsay and it came back a different Frankenstein...needs to go back yea john I'm around let me give ya something new to check out as you know that was from a different mic sometimes you get lucky ( lol sometimes ). Thoughts I wanna or would like to make a capsule that is a universal fit for most of the pencils mics. The km backplates are very different than the majority of the SDC. in fact maybe make one to try out on your C5 .. Any thoughts if so what would one pay for a SCREW on sound ? Honest think it would be kewl It a lot cheaper than a unit ? anyone ?

IMHO... The Gefell M300s and the Beyer 940s blow the doors off Neumann KM84s, but in different ways. The Beyers are the most life-like SDCs there are, and think they're LDCs at times. You hear a stereo drum recording made with those alone and you think you're in the room in front of the kit. The Gefells are 'already sweetened'. And the perfect amount and type of audio sweetening. You hear an acoustic guitar recorded with just ONE (and with the exception of Neumann KM54 and M582) you think "wow, that's what an acoustic guitar is supposed to sound like!".
I've been interested in the Gefells also. I've got a pair of the Beyer MC 930's and have been pretty happy with them. Never heard of the 940 though and can't find any info on them anywhere.

I have the Gefell M930 mics.. They are LDC with M9 capsules.. They are nothing like the Beyer MC930 (very confusing..)

I have about 5 AKG452EB bodies with no capsules. It would be great if a capsule could be made to fit those, perhaps with an adapter so the capsule can be made to fit other mics? I know the 452 is a bit smaller in diameter than most pencils.

for that km84 We could make a simple coupler adapter for different models

Some might call that "finished". I wouldn't call it band passed. If you want that traditionally bright shiny nashville sound, a C451 would be more your ticket - but that was not what we were after. The sound you put up and then took down wouldn't work for me in the situation I was recording at all - way too bright and pingy. There's more than one sound and more than one way to skin the cat, and we're not all looking for the same sound - that's the beauty of having so many options these days. KM84's may not be for everyone, but they are classics for good reason. Even if you don't like em. :-)

I think Rolff must get the "you guys selling that?" Question a lot...he tends to be a little prickly when asked

Well I guess since I have the crappier mic I'll just have to make up for it by playing better. Hahaha

for that km84 We could make a simple coupler adapter for different models Shannon, am I understanding you right that you can/will make screw on capsules for KM84 bodies? I have a pair with KK85 capsules. I have been loosely looking for a pair of KK84 capsules but they don't come around often. I just saw some in black but I have the silver body mics.

Whipped them up in small mixing bowl and preheat oven to ….. naw i kid, i made them from some stock alum rod. We were going to add them to the KAT lineup. i really think that it would be awesome

Woot, just ordered one of these - hope to have it next week! Thanks to JK and Joel for the awesome samples. Getting a good-condition 84 down to NZ was more than I wanted to deal with, so Gefell it is.

I have always wanted to hear the M300. I have pairs of KM140's, stock mk012's and modified mk012's. The km140's have all of the best of what both types of Oktava do. The modified Oktava has better top, but lacks the body of the km140. The stock Oktava has the body, but a much less distinct top. Of course that's apples to apples cardioid capsules....which I never use on the Oktava. It's either the omni or the Joly LDC heads, both very useful. I also have the Red LDC's and the Oktava 102 LDC's, neither are all arounders, but can be great when you know where to put them. I also rarely use the km140's!! Or my UMT70S! Go figure.

The 84's win when compared to the m300's. The m300's are nice mics for sure but, I prefer the km84's.
