joelhamilton just bought one of these. Brought it over. Now I want one. Big bottom end and smooth top end. Anyone compare this to other sdc's?

Bigger bottom - not boomy...Not NEARLY as toppy as the stock...All around, tons better IMHO. Less pointy in the mids.

An SDC is my next purchase (as in, within the next month). Had been eyeing the Beyer MC930 or C5...this is only a bit more...pretty good price at VK right now, and their international shipping is good. Hmmm.
You record anything with it?

Wow - the Gefell is huge. Still has a nice airy sheen on the high end though. Quite a contrast there, really appreciate the comparison.

Sop that is JK's Martin. Those Authentics are truly amazing with varnish finish and hide glue through out.
Cowboy I will be happy to beta test that new 47 he's getting!

I keep telling people about Gefell.. Nobody seems to know about them even though they were once part of Neumann.. I kinda hope nobody finds out about them so their prices stay relatively decent.
I don't think there is anything on the market that matches Gefell for tonal quality.

If interested in the 300, I think it's worthwhile to check out a mv692 with M70 nickel capsule. On par or some would say better than the 300. Probably cheaper, and infinitely more expandable. Including the ability to screw on one of the greatest M7 LDC capsule heads out there for a killer SDC/LDC combo that's very difficult to best. IMO.
PS - i'm talking about the older transformer coupled versions, not the newer "T" transformerLESS versions.

The Gefells are something special, but my favorite SDC's are still the Sony C535/536, and everybody seamed to love them in Mike Jasper's Tapeop survey.

The 300 is also nice on piano if you are using a 4 mic system. 2 in 2 out. I like the 300's in and a R88 out, or M149's in R88 out. The 300 is a sleeper of a mic but it does everything else but put you to sleep as a user.

I don't think there is anything on the market that matches Gefell for tonal quality. One could truthfully argue that Gefell is the only authentic part of Neumann that is left. And yes, not much matches them for tonal quality, outside some other older Neumann designs, Wagners and old C12 C60 family microphones.

BTW Gefell is Neumann before WW2. After WW2 the GDR took it and renamed it to Microtech Gefell. With the fall of the Wall in Berlin the Neumanns where given back what they owned (1993). Gefell is no secret in Germany, special not in the East part. If you buy Gefell you buy Neumann. In the UMT 70, for example, is the good old M7 capsule. The Neumanns decided for good reason not to rename the Brand again. East German Microphones where of the same quality, maybe even higher, as the ones they did in the WEST. I like MGs and I do use them too.

I have a pair of M300s. I bought them to do freelance orchestral recording, using them in XY and ORTF. They are very big in the bottom end and very quiet. I do find them a little peaky in the 3-5K range. Not as much as the KM184, but more than a KM84, and the KM140s (which is what I was hoping they would be like).
I've used them a lot for acoustic guitar recording, often just one placed about 4 feet back. They are very detailed and rich at that distance. Any closer and they are too bright for me.
I did an SDC comparison a while back using the M300, AKG452, modded Oktava MC-012, and the Beezneez Lulu. I need to do the comparison again as I borrowed a KM84 to throw into the mix.

So the moral of the story is to just buy a KM84?
