...all of my full-time dedicated professional audio-engineer associates have migrated to Nuendo/Cubase and don't look back...a few still freelance in studios where PT is standard, but in their home-based studios, their preference is Cubase...I too had a three-room PT (OS9) commercial facility, but after shuttering due to economic necessity, Cubase became my DAW of choice...

I guess the question is, are you willing to leave what you know like the back of your hand, and having compatibility world wide for $300 a year. If so....then maybe check out DP. It's got some similarities to PT, but Logic...oy, and Cubase, almost as strange. But to each his own. Rock what you use.
PS - I didn't vote in the poll, cause I choose to stick with Pt. LOL

Avid is out of their minds, $300 a year or I lose 18 years of ownership value and start from 0? Hey a Avid, Suck my balls good luck In their White Paper, you can see how the music industry-and soon the film imo- has been captured and decimated by the IT industry. But their solution is a doozy. Like this: "Today’s media professionals and organizations are under tremendous pressure. From the way media is produced and managed to the methods used to protect, optimize, distribute, and analyze content, every part of the value chain is being affected. The industry needs a leader to step forward and provide direction. Avid Everywhere is our vision for connecting creative professionals and media organizations with their audiences in a more powerful, efficient, collaborative, and profitable way." So, information technology has driven "the "value chain"- profits- down and more IT's the solution? I don't believe it for one second. Just as starting in the 80's corporations like Xerox began to have guys with finance backgrounds as their CEO's, today entertainment corporations have IT guys as their CEO's. You know who it helped in the 80's? Wall Street and the CEO's. Now, in entertainment the CEO and IT are going to benefit. Avid's CEO's-Hernandez- biography says " His focus and passion is to advance technology initiatives that specifically enable the active collaboration and connection between individuals, teams, and businesses." Today, Avid would have you believe that your success-and the success of your band/songs/post production- will be based on their IT solutions to connect your band or music to the ITsphere. I'm not buying it. PS-I'd love to hear some opposing views from people that believe IT-From Avid or anybody- is going to improve profits in the the music and post production business for creators, and musicians. I may be an old curmudgeon who doesn't see potential profits that are staring me right in the face.

Avid is out of their minds, $300 a year It is my understanding that this is for the subscription service, NOT perpetual ownership. You can choose to subscribe, or own a license. I own a license. This license costs me nothing additional to use, and after one year (Jan 2016 for me), I will have to sign up for support to get new features.

I have no problem with waves wup, but $899 to start over? yeah right lol)

Why do we HAVE to switch - let alone, now? I think it can last for YEARS & see what happens down the road.
Drbill stated " ... leave what you know like the back of your hand, and having compatibility world wide ...". And that is a tremendous fact.
What I hated was the change of hardware (from 24 to Mix to HD) and all the 3rd party headaches. But each one would last for many years & audio files are still transferable from SDII.
Why not stay at 10 (or even 9, 8) ?

Not sure just what I am going to do just yet. I have been having a lot of fun with Reaper lately and could certainly see transitioning to it on a regular basis but I'm not ruling anything out at this point. I'm not married to any of them and at the end of the day it really doesn't take a whole lot to learn a new one. I'll at least hang on to PT HD11 for compatibility purposes if no other reason. I could run that for the next 5-6 years at least and by then the entire landscape is likely to have completely changed.
One thing I do not like is Avid's business tactics, they are increasingly slimy and though I understand that folks feel they need to use their tools I am reluctant to swim in their corporate septic tank anymore than I have to.

At Christmas, I just bought PT11 and was considering returning to the Digi fold but with all of this, Studio One seems better and better but for a few small glitches. For the most part, it is rock solid and fast. My only true beef is the lack of mono busses for the sake of hardware but someone helped me find a solution.

6 months down the track, you will be a DAW JEDI no matter which way you go.
Logic is cheap.
I am sure either or any would do the job.
I can help you all you want with Logic, as well as I am sure Randy and Herbie can too with Cubase and someone else with somethinng else.
My suggestion , buy a months subscription to mac pro video, and watch the training videos on cubase and logic...starting with the functions you would use normally... and then see how you feel.
I dont do midi, really. I might play a b3 part or a rhodes part now and then.
I only use midi drums to play my first guide guitar part, and then I just play real drums.
I do use Flex Time (beat detective) a lot.. always in the writing stage..I quantise everything during the writing stage, and then leave it alone during final takes..if I can. If I can't , I use it.
I really use the DAW as a tape machine, with easier structural editing, you know, move a verse around add a chorus.. mainly all this happens at the writing stage.
My point, I could probably use any DAW i wanted, and it wouldn't really change much after initial familirisation.
Maybe try Reaper....
cheers

DAW's are like cell phone carriers they will all do the job, but in their own stupid way they all suck! If I lived in a world where compatibility and post didn't matter (If I liked doing video I would be much richer, but I find it as boring as selling insurance) I would buy an older Radar and use reaper, but I like my neighbor coming down stairs in what she woke up in laying a vocal because I can just bring it up in HD and be done.

Left Avid/PT many years ago and went with Logic. No regrets. If Harrison Mixbus had the ability to use VST / Software Synths I would possibly go that route and pair it with a Linux computer. Until then, it's Logic.

LOL I agree with this but I would still not want to pay $300 a year. I use Cubase and on Mac it's kind of finicky. All of the slate plugins give me issues and don't close out properly. If I was moving from PT I would probably use Logic.

the easiest transition will be Samplitude. the editing is pretty much the same and you can create your own key commands so you wont have to relearn anything really. plus integrated spectral editing is the sh?t. fret buzz, finger slides, lip smacks, everything gone in seconds. it is so awesome i dont know why others havent caught on. beyond the basics though it does get a little too complicated. too many options that arent necessary.
cubase will be the hardest transition but i think it will become the new standard as more and more ppl move from the studio to the bedroom. i dont see penniless up and comers buying in to the avid model. i honestly dont believe that PT has a future. not with all the cheaper options out there like reaper and S1. plus todays electro world is geared more towards midi, vsti's, and synths and as far as production tools go cubase is tops and "no" tools as they say is at the bottom.
im in the same boat. im not going to give avid another dollar. im going to hold off as long as i can though because ive already tried to change and it is tear inducingly frustrating.

Many fine DAWs out there nowadays! I use Sonar X3 especially for content creation, it came with a huge amount of nice softsynths and effect plugins. For mixing, as long as i don't go OTB again, i will use Mixbus every now and then, it just does the trick, feels like an analog console. Some guys use Logic and directly connect it's outs to Mixbus, another good solution. Reaper - i checked it out for a while, it IS a nice option. Insanely small memory fingerprint, professional feel, great feature set. Cubase, well, i lost contact to Steinberg's DAWs, last one i tried was one of the Nuendo's, but it's looong ago. Didn't feel bad either! Whatever you choose, it is just a tool. After a while you feel somehow comfortable using it. I am with Sonar for a long while now, but it was really easy for me to jump into Ardour/Mixbus. Really. Whatever fits your bill, workflow, needs...

just to clarify what you're buying when you buy this: shop.avid.com/ccrz__ProductDetails?viewState=DetailView&cartID=&sku=AR-AV-PT11UC-00&&store=shopyou get PT11 license forever. you get upgrade to PT12 whenever PT12 comes out, with a license that lasts forever. you get ONE YEAR of support (phone/email, i guess) If you want more phone/email support after that year expires, THAT is what you have to purchase annually. you don't purchase the software annually. once you buy the software, it's yours. it's the email/phone support that has a time limit.

The PT situation becomes less heinous with more understanding.
I'll recommend Digital Performer as an alternative. Solid, great sounding, great editing and pitch tools, Lots of customization and template options. Flawless latency compensation. Elegant offline bouncing and exporting in all formats. A little weak in built in software instruments, there's good ones, but it's not a song construction kit like Garage Band and Logic. Nifty tool for effortlessly comping multiple takes. iOS remote controls DP from where the mic is, over wifi.
Lots of features I don't use like notation and sound for video integration.

the problem is that if you don't pay the support plan at 12 months, it expires, and you lose your ability to upgrade at a reasonable price, and you're forced to start over and pay full pop $899.00 for PT vanilla, instead of the upgrade from what ever version you're on, to the current version. This will certainly prove a fail, i promise, there is already a mass exodus going on, if you read the comments on any audio forum where this is discussed, every poster says the same thing..."see ya avid".

Using an aux and disabling the channel output. That is what I have done to be able to run my two comps is series on lead vox as I always process verses and choruses different due to dynamics in the performance.

i started on Cubase VST24 before switching to pro tools, as I had been convinced it was the industry standard. I haven't used Cubase in about 12 years but might consider jumping back if things with Avid don't shape up. i'd imagine Cubase is an entirely different animal today than it was back then

When using Studio One I miss having mono aux channels for plugin fx. Wanting to have a mono delay or verb or mod fx is not anything new, and I see no way of achieving this, other than duplicating the track and adding the fx. Surely this will be adressed in the anticipated Studio One V3.. I wonder when this will be released... Hmm..
