Jus curious, have any of the principles in the recent discussion here met each other in the flesh? I've met Tony. He's OK by me, and that's why I'm so puzzled...

Which reminds me of a thought I had. John, if you compute what it costs you to keep the lights on here, (maybe some profit, I have no beef with profiting from something people want,) and divide it by the active members, (even though I see from the registered people there must be lots of people who lurk here but don’t post,) maybe you should consider a subscription model for membership. Subscriptions generally fail on the internet because it’s the world of free content, but me personally, would I pay the equivalent of a year of Car And Driver magazine print edition to stay here with the people I read and interact with daily and feel comfortable contributing? Yes I would. It’s that precious to me. I would never post this or most of the things I have here on GS or most general boards on the internet. This is unique. John, I'd hate to think you're watching your stats 'cause it's grow or death to RGO. Agree or at least the Donors Circle where those who know the super secret digital handshake and hand over the coin! Or we just tell all those Grown up BOC fans if they gives us their hard earned money will let them in on the secret that Don hangs here!

How about this. I'm going to start from the thread that really pissed me off and delete to this place. Out of respect for Jeff Steiger and his products. I'm sorry this got off topic. Only fair John. But it IS hard to keep threads straight. You tend to hit 'reply.' : )

All that argument was doing - and I was one of the worst offenders - was scaring people away from the board...So, on to the subject of FC526's

I think everyone here is tops, the ones i've met and not, that includes Bill, much about nothing, it happens on the net, i think JK did the right thing by vaporizing a bunch of bluster, back to these gems that JS brewed up in his magic dungeon 8)

It appears that the FC526 thread wasn't deleted specifically, but all of junior's (the thread OP) posts and threads were deleted. If you follow the google cache history, one of the last things he posted was questioning a moderator on why another post was deleted. Pretty heavy handed, unless junior got fed up and decided to delete all of his own posts, not sure how that works. Sorry to be late, guys. Not sure what's going on over there, but it's crazy - like dealing with fucking children. I could post the exchange I had with Graham (moderator), but I don't want to further embarrass him or derail talking about the FC526. FWIW, I can't wait to hear some sound samples of these things!

He MUST come there on Saturday! Jeff - I haven't read the entire thread.... Have you expounded at all on the whole myriad of opamp options? I for one would like to know the reasoning behind it all.... Thx, bp

I for one would like to know the reasoning behind it all.... Thx, bp Interesting question. Hope Jeff could elaborate this. From my perspective, every unit having 3x 2520-footprint for different functions offers alot of experimenting playground. The mentioned alternatives have different flavors , from gritty to clean, gar1731 melcor-style beeing the most colored up to clean state-of-the-art chip opamp adapter... So you can decide by yourself how to start with it, it also gives you the freedom to first build a cost-friendlier chip-opamp version to test the unit and work your way up to the optimal combination to your taste...

I have 3 usernames that were banned BTW - I would think sll's Red Dots would be the most colored, right? At least that was my experience with the different opamps in the pres...

I think this is close, the intermediate stage is the gain control amp, the lme49710 op amp should make attack quite fast in there? realgearonline.com/post/47277

Was it ever explained what the three opamps do? Is it like Input, Output and Compressor sidechain? For the discrete 2520 style positions, the 1st amp is the balanced receiver. The 2nd is the amp stage where gain reduction occurs. Coined the "VVR Signal Preamp". Same concept as the "signal preamp" stage in an 1176, if you look at their schemo. The 3rd amp is the output stage which is post the output pot. I have this set up very much the same as the 2nd stage in a VP28 or the ML2. The DIP8 chip is a single opamp that is half of the full wave peak detector (red LED lights when output exceeds +28dBu). The quad chip has one channel for the rest of the full wave peak detector. One channel is for the GR meter and the other 2 are the side chain audio detection. The detector amp is like an 1176 so a "peak limiter" by definition. Drbil, I quoted myself from earlier in this thread to give you the description for the 3 opamps. All 3 are definitely required and not added in there to just have extra opamps in the audio path. I spent most of yesterday with Kyle Manner and Bart Busch at Station West studio in Nashville. We ran kick, snare, bass and electric guitar through four of my FC526 compressors and each one had a different opamp combination in it. They were also multing to an original blackface 1176. I'm not sure of the Rev. I'm hoping that we can do the exact same testing at Randy's place on Saturday and capture clips for everyone. Each opamp combination has its uses and definite strengths. Oddly enough, the most favored combination between Kyle Bart and myself was a 1731 in the receiver position and IC adapter boards in the other 2 spots. All 1731's were awesome in a certain way and all red dots were extremely awesome in a little different way. I would say the most colored sounding combination is all 1731's. Maybe JK can bring his Warm unit for comparisons? I'm not sure if Randy has an original 1176 or not? Again, my compressor is not meant to be a clone or replica of the 1176, or any other compressor for that matter. It's just a well-known benchmark to use for audio testing.

Jeff, so what I'm gathering is that sometimes, too much chocolate ice cream is too much? If you/we are running a vp28 into one of these guys that's a LOT of transformers and a LOT of DOA's before getting to the next stage. I'm guessing that was your thoughts in designing / adapting IC's? I regularly laugh at how we used to engineer - bypassing as much of the API console as possible in the bay before hitting tape. It was a different world, no?

Yes Bill, sometimes you may not feel like adding chocolate fudge to chocolate ice cream but maybe some warm caramel with some crushed pecans on it would be awesome!!

You're killing me. LOL
Or sometimes a glass of water? I'm asking honestly. I didn't expect you to ever use IC's in the audio path of your products, although personally I "get it". I could see where 3 Red dots in a row might just be over the top.
