Seeing the mic locker video I kept thinking back to the late 80s early 90s and Sound Summit. At the time the mic locker was considered one of the best, it was about one of those cabinets. Blackbird simply incredible!

Half of the mic locker was set up in the studios too. He had a 269 and 251 in the vocal booth. Had a FET47 on acoustic. Thought that was interesting.
I would say the echo chamber was probably 8x8 and 20+ feet tall. Looked like concrete walls.

Yeah - it did. Just went on forever. The chamber is between the tracking room and control room. They kept the door between the tracking room and chamber open during the session. I assumed to use kind of as another room sound on drums. Or maybe they just forgot to close it lol. I was so busy with other stuff I didn't really get into asking for different options. Although I did ask for the Faichild Ito be on something - ended up on AG. I asked for it on scratch vocals.

Honestly... a good mic preamp (VP28,1073) a good mic (U87i, 47, C12,KM84) and that reverb sound.... and something to track it on.. thats all i would need...
I would cut acoustic guitars and vocals for the rest of my days... and maybe some hand percussion and be done.
cheers

That is actually church plaster. Don't ask me what the difference in plaster one would buy at Home Depot and "church plaster" is....99$ a lb? Ha. But, yeah....the remote moving ceiling room? It's both amazing slightly spinal tap'ian, no?

They have pencil lines on the wall marking where to stop the ceiling (of the echo chamber) as it comes up and down to put the ringing in the key of the song. I have been in there and helped them do that once. That worked great!

Until you can link into my head....no. And, when that becomes possible, you might think twice about what you might accidentally click on in there....some shit can't be unseen. Ha.

Amazing, thanks for sharing John. That echo chamber is beautiful, even on cheap headphones, the tail is amazing. The mic locker is almost as big as mine, wait, what? Don't wake me up now...

I figured it was some kind of thin permacrete. I never asked. If I was to build one, that is what I would use, as it is quite a bit stronger than normal concrete.

How do the rooms sound John? That's the most important thing, I think. This is really nice, but not much different from a dozen studios I've seen.
The echo chamber video only lasted a few seconds, i was looking forward to seeing more of it. When I did my first album The Demons for Mercury Records, we recorded at Plaza Sound. Plaza Sound was on the top floor of Radio City Music Hall in Rockefeller Center. It was the original NBC Studios room they purpose built for Toscanini to conduct the NBC orchestra and do their radio and TV shows from. One of the reverb sends was, get this, Radio City Msic Hall. I guess that qualifies as a "Large Room" eh ;-)
I hope we can hear the tracks you're doing when it's finished John, good luck!

The ceiling height is what always blows me away about the tracking rooms of major studios. The wall materials of wood and stone are available to anybody, and many people with large homes have basements as long and wide as the tracking room. It's the ceiling height that's the show stopper.
For you acoustics experts: Has there been any acoustics research regarding acoustic solutions to emulate the benefits of the high ceiling without having one? I'd be interested in any thoughts on the subject.
Thanks again to John for the photos.

I have a huge crawl space under my house...hmmm. I built a home studio in Granada Hills, suburb of LA back in the early 1980's. This guy's dad had a 1962 Cuban missle crisis era atomic bomb shelter built under the front lawn. The access was a stairwell in the rec room, opened up to be part of a large tracking space including the garage. I stripped out all the insulation and removed the shelves and food storage. We left in the ventilators and filters, there were a couple sticking up into the front lawn like a box with vents. I placed a pair of JBL 4312 12" 3 way monitors inside powered by a BGW power amp. A pair of AKG 451's were used as the pickup mics. Since reverb time was fixed (not being able to move 2 foot thick concrete walls easily) I designed a one knob compressor/expander circuit to control reverb time. In the center it was normal. To the left was expansion that shortened reverb times. To the right was compression that created longer reverb times. Yes, that studio was called the Bombshelter.
