I have the computer gear plugged into an isolation transformer and all the audio gear plugged into one outlet by way of a six-way adapter and heavy duty power strips.

This one's a little harder Ben, some differences here might be the playing or the angle of the guitar to mic. In this case I liked B.

While this is not the most scientific test, I will tell you that we did our very best to keep the player in exactly the same position, only switching out the mic cable. The mic was in the exact same position on the stand. I would be trying to poke holes in this test too if I hadn't had the experience with the two mic takes that I shared earlier. Both of those cables are in this test.

ok, so c loses on my monitors, A is the most dynamic in way of proximity(probably due to performance diffs), and B has the most string articulation, and appears to be a 1/2 db louder to me, louder is always better 8), so i'd chose B stand alone.
thanx for doing this Ben

So, I think we can all agree that there ARE differences in sound here, now, whether those differences are significant is another story.
HERE ARE THE ANSWERS - (so if you have not heard the samples yet, don't read any further):
A: Accusound B: EWI C: Zaolla
I don't think Accusound makes this particular cable anymore, but I bought it at the AES show at a discount for $120
Last I checked, the Zaollas are selling for almost $500, but I paid $200
The EWI are the cheapest of the bunch. I probably paid about $12-15 each because I bought a bunch of them, but they were selling for about $20.
Again, the purpose of this test was not to determine which cable is "Better", but only to demonstrate potential audio differences v. price-point.

I too buy with my ears, not the price. In that case, I'd have been happy to buy the EWI cable. I use a custom Mogami cable for my Tab/Funkenwerk mic. I have no idea if it's any better than stock, but it was recommended by Warhead at Zen Pro and it was in line with other stores pricing, so I went for it.
After hearing these files, I wish I had a few other 7 pin mic cable to try. It's ironic that we buy things like a microphone so carefully, but rarely get a chance to try different cables. I try to get the best I can afford, and it's a drag to think something as simple to try as a mic cable would get me closer to a sound I like. Warhead said they'd tried a few, and the was the winner, so I had to trust him.

I chose opposite on the diff tests as expected lol, there are a lot of variables that play into these things, it's always best to try ur own comparisons in ur own familiarized environment, just apply logical parameters to ur tests, and they will prove to be of value ime.

So does this mean I need a different mic cable for different purposes? As if tracking isn't hard enough already ;-)

We started out with some of us saying cables matter, and some saying not much at all, and now we're at a place where a drum sounds better with one mic cable, and a guitar with another using the same mic.
When you're trying to get the best possible sound, it can get so damn tweaky, that's for sure. Where I hope I'll land is in a decent room, with a couple of mics I like, ( maybe the MK47 and a C12), a couple of good pres, like a 1073 w/ EQ, a better computer with a big screen, better monitors like the Focal Solo 6, and maybe a Burl or something equivalent for A-D/D-A. If I can't get a good sound with gear like that, well, than it's my fault, not the situation, and certainly not the cables..
