On cyber Monday Hairball is doing an element preamp plus fet500 comp for $750/ combo deal. I think that's about $100 discount. Correct me if I'm wrong but I remember a different price $650. The Fet sells for $450 & the elements go for $290...give or take. Btw, Apogee joined the sale with some stuff up to 70%. The Ad16x and Da16x was $996...give or take again. Excuse me for not posting links, cell txt is a Pita.

The LA-610 is not the same compressor as the LA-2A. Also, you can't patch a different pre into the compressor section of the LA-610, so you're a bit locked in with that piece. The IK stuff sounds good to my ears. The FabFilter stuff is my favorite for clean and gui. The Softube Summit is really nice and I've heard good things about their other plugs too. Waves CLA compressors are good. Some of the Plugin Alliance is cool. Soundtoys effects are awesome. Also, if you work in education, you can get a discount on some of this stuff. FabFilter is 50% off for the education licenses, but you can't resell them. The compressor in the LA-610 may not be the same, but it is similar ..no? Â ...and yes I understand the 610 is only good for tracking, but I was hoping to get a feel for how it's compressor would work (and sound?). So I 'm checking out the FabFilter stuff, and though I was secretly hoping for retro-looking/RLgear mimicking plugs, I know that I should be going for the stuff designed to do its job as a gui. Â I'll check out some of the others, but in the interim, I've applied for the FF educator's discount. Â Thanks J Did you grab anything yet? There are advantages with both vintage modeled plugs and with slick, fabfilter style gui plugs. The vintage modeled stuff usually has fewer parameters, so there is less to screw up. An 1176 and LA-2A plug combo is usually going to work on vocals. Neve or API eq's have set q's that work. The already set shapes will give you musical results without much fuss. The FabFilter stuff is nice for the visual feedback. You can see exactly where problem frequencies are and correct them. You can see the peaks that you're trimming off with a compressor. I prefer the FF for fixes and the vintage style for sweetening. Good luck man.

Haven't pulled any triggers - but there's no rush on the FF stuff. I can do it when I'm ready.

I've been out of town so I haven't been able to demo any of these plugins:
-Air Eiosis ($99) -Slate VMR /Clariphonic Combo ($199) -FabFilter Pro Q2 ($125)
I'd probably want them all.... but I'm spending too much money already...
Leaning toward FabFilter since it may be less likely to go on sale again, and it seems to be a more refined product. Right now I mainly use the built in cubase EQ for fixing problem frequencies, so I think I would get a lot of use out of it. The others are sooooooo tempting though, but I'm sure they'll go on sale again soon (if not within the next 30 days).

Anybody know what the bonus plug that is included if you buy one of their other plugs (called Balance) from SKnote does?
Just a very vague description about what it actually is.
Might grab the STA regardless.
Cheers, Geoff

I bought the Sta and it has serious problems. He is working on a fix but the minute the meters move, it is around 16db of compression. Here's to hoping he has a fix soon because it is nothing but a bad sounding distortion box right now.

Not like it was expensive to begin with, but I likely won't own the hardware, I hope it works someday so I can hear what the Sta shouting is all about. I bought some software I'd been wanting, the FabFilter Mastering bundle, PSP mastering compressor and limiter (when they were on sale,) the VMR/Clariphonic (thanks M57 and jcoutu1,) and the Waves API equalizers for $49. (To take some of the load off my UAD hardware.) Might have to go for the SoundToys deal.

The cheapest I can find the UBK Pusher is $82.28 at AudioDeluxe. Has anybody found it any cheaper?
Plus you get UVI Grand Piano Model D for free, if that's important to you.

What's the verdict on the Clariphonic plugin? I've always thought the hardware would be a cool piece to have, how's the software stack up?

I have to say - I have it and just don't use it a lot. I just find the comp rudimentary...but the EQ is nice, but limited to more broad strokes. The few times I've used the pre, it's been pretty cool...
