I say it is simple stupid to give work away for free, and that includes streaming. But who we are talking about, those Bands are multi millionaires!!! Its easy for them to give it away for free.
The great internet for Indie-Bands is one of the biggest lies we have ever heard. The truth its that majors still rule YT, Spotify, I-tunes, Google music etc.
Nothing has changed except that we all won't earn a penny with music in 10 years, maybe earlier. Studios will shut down, musicians won't even try to throw something in the market. Good musicians will give up.
Maybe MB has to die before something new and fresh will happen? But giving away music for free is to 100% the wrong way to go!!!

at first look, it seems like a self serving publicity stunt, i don't know what way this affects the struggling sects of the failing music industry, there is a level of "oh well, doesn't matter anyway?" Barring the anomalies(U2 and the like), It seems you need 2 things to make cash in this bizz, a hit and ownership of your publishing, please correct me if i'm wrong.

They don't need the cash. They will get more money now because people will love them, Apple probably paid them something to do it, and more people will go to their next tour. This would only work with probably 5 artists.

Still the message to the potential customers is: Music is for free. Good for U2, nice deal for them. I ask myself why they did it; if their Music still sells good - 3 Million copies in 2009. They should have think twice before sneaking behind the back of million musicians which do not have a big promotion-machine behind them. I still stand the theory that those messages like "for free" are killing music biz. The process is slowley but steaddy. A few years ago Sir Paul produced an Album which he sold to Starbucks? I ask myself when we see the first concerts totally for free, the free tour? But who I am. For young talented people all those new barriers are leading into the same power Majors had in the old times. Its even getting more worse if companies like Apple deal with them. If your money comes around 10 corners and everybody gets a percentege… Once again it is a good deal for U2 but a bad message for the crowd in the businnes. If I would be a studio owner; this would be the day I quit.

I hate this band even more now. Hate is a big word. No they make a deal, they know the last days of earning have begun. They take what the market delivers. They are just humans too. What I do not like that those famous people do not make the situation of music business public. I wont tell Names but in the discussion a so called STAR explained me that this topic is not popular, and so he cant point his fans to it. I replied that we all will go downhill if famous musicinas do not start to tell truth in interviews. In the end the stars made a lot of money and they are egoists. That is even normal too for humans.

A match made in hell.

...Apple has mastered the art of "smoke and mirrors" and surely their minions will continue to lineup in cult-like fashion...
...somehow, Apple's controversial "1984" big-brother commercial video seems even more appropriate than ever, these days...

I hated them before this move based on their music. I think it's total crap. The Edge? Get real, he sucks. Ha, let's just play the same lick saturated in delay for 3:45 and call it a song. Garbage. Now their acting as though they're giving away their music for free? They got paid, they're not giving it away for free. If anything, Apple is the one giving it away for free, not the band. Apple purchased every copy of the album and is giving it away to anyone with an Apple account for free. Not the band. This is just making it more difficult for other bands to charge a fair rate for their albums, because the band is claiming that they're giving it away and the album sales wouldn't matter anyway. Trash.

The only winner in the long run will be Apple with this deal. And U2. I'm POSITIVE U2 and their label are getting major bucks for this. They're using U2's name to hock computers and make billions - they didn't do it for free.

I don't have any problem with U2 musically...I think they're fantastic. But I thought Bono was the champion of oppressed people across the world - uh...well, what about songwriters, Bono? (Ok, 1st world problems, I'll admit) It seems money is greater than ideology afterall...

This has been going on for several years. I went to a Prince concert in LA and got a "free" copy of Musicology. That was years ago. It did help the stats so his CD showed more sales. It's a great CD to run trough my Bricasti M7 as it's totally dry.
In order to sell a product, it must have value. If it has no value, it is something you give away if it won't sell. Commercially viable recorded music is facing extinction if it's only made to be given out. Live performance is the last venue of a working musician and that is also down and not as popular as it used to be.
Music has lost it's significant importance in most people's lives. It has been replaced by other activities. Now you see the mixing of entertainment, like that dumb-*ss fashion/music show last night. Once upon a time people used to really listen to music, now it's something you put on to fill the void while engaged in other activities.
Music has become an awful vocation, but remains an excellent avocation. The term "struggling musician" has never been more appropriate.
