OK - I'd like to officially say my initial reaction of Dream/Ruby native being cool, but not particularly better than anything...was wrong. And I hadn’t tried Lion before just now.
They’re all pretty stellar - way less tweakable - but comparing to my AxeFX, they absolutely hold up. In fact, it was pretty hard to NOT get a great tone out of these...I could match pretty easily in AxeFX, but the UA plugs are more intuitive…well, I was finding myself matching the Axe to the plugs especially on the Plexi.
But whoever styled the tones did a great job. I really, really, really, really, really don’t need another amp sim…but they’re a ton of fun. Might have to break down. Really thought the Ruby and Lion were absolutely stellar, Dream sounds great too, but I was pretty floored by Ruby and Lion.

It has been a while, but from memory, they sound the same…I’m getting a little more gain out of these because you can obviously determine how much gain you’re putting in. But man…I really might have to spring for these. |

They have that Signature 2 bundle right now for $199 that has all the new plugins including these. Even if you didn't care about the other plugins, that's $66 per amp sim, which isn't too bad. It's better than the $149 they were asking for each individually.
I haven't tried them yet, but listened to a bunch of the pedal demos on YT. Always thought they sounded great.
I've heard a bunch of people saying they prefer this or that better, but I think UA did a great job on the sounds. I'd be mostly concerned whether the latency would work since they aren't DSP. It probably depends on where your project is at when you have to play the guitar part!

copied from another thread because its relevant: I spent about a half hour comparing the new UAFX amp plugin demos to my Amalgam captures in Tonex and it was not even close. Pretty sad for UAD honestly. Their DSP can't even run their new amp plugins which sound terrible compared to Tonex anyhow. It's a lose/lose situation. It's like they don't have any real musicians testing their stuff or at least nobody honest enough to give real criticism? Or do they just lack the talent now? I think its fascinating how Amalgam is just one guy with a vintage amp collection and his captures somehow completely smoke the stock Tonex captures and the UAFX amps... BTW: You can download the free version of Tonex and then download 20 of the free versions of Amalgam captures from tone net and you have tone and feel that no modeler plugin can even remotely get close to. It's absurd that this is FREE. just search "amalgam" once you login to tone.net in the tonex section.... I really liked Tonex at first, but after a while the captures started to feel more static and less reactive than the algorithmic alternatives that I have. I never ended up paying for the full version because of it.

They are really good. I'm a big fan of the pedals, and the plugins, from my initial tests, sound equally as good.
I won't say they are game changers, that my fractal, helix, other plugins like nembribi, Softube, are all crap now. But these UAFX amps are a lot easier to use and to get a good sound.
With any other modeler or plugin, I feel like a battle to make it good. It can be good, it can be great actually, but to get there it's hard. Even presets or stock sounds.
With these UAD plugins/pedals, it's hard to make them bad. I don't like their lack of features tho, with the pedals they doesn't bother me too much, but with the plugin, it's another history.
Cab options are too few, no gate for the vox and fender... Not even a tuner.

Where I think uad shines is in being emulations rather than IR captures. This especially in speaker emulations. I have not tried the plugs yet, but the pedals have been impressive. Looking forward to take on the plug for the quick and dirty if it matches the pedals… which so far has been the only shortcut I could imagine using.

I question that person’s ears. Tonex suffers from the same issues Kemper did originally. Everything ultimately sounds the same. Not nearly as dramatically different as these plugs or the amps in Axefx. |

Only the Amalgam full amp captures and maybe some other 3rd parties are worth trying. Once you start doing amp only captures and using IRs for the cabs the magic is gone. Static or less reactive or flat and 2d is how most captures and anything with an IR sounds/feels to me. The only time I would use an amp only capture is when using with a power amp and cab in a room. Algorithmic amps can have some good feel but something is off about the distortion and the cabs for my ear on most and especially UAFX. Milkman by Mixwave is much better but still falls short of Amalgam full captures on TONEX which he calls “essentials” to my ear. I do use the Milkman reverb if in the box though. Lovely stereo harmonic tremolo on that one too. |

It’s not pre-mixed at all and not as limiting as a pre-mixed plexi type amp. The black rooster cypress TT-15 orange tiny terror is similar but with a contour knob that is just an eq and doesn’t add probably unwanted additional processing like the uad lion does. The softube Lemmy murder one marshall super bass, you’d have to turn more knobs or add an eq or treble boost pedal. |
