I did this at home with the Soyuz 0-19. It's called the 0-17 FET now. Have a listen, I think it might be a good fit for you if you can find one used.

Love Ben's C12a tube mics. For less money, I would check on Ben's non-tube version.
Gefell um70s, if in good shape, are super amazing. I have not tried the transformerless Gefells, but if it is the same capsule, it is likely amazing.

Gefell M930, hands down.
You can get them right around 1K if you look around a little.

You can't find a better all-rounder, workhorse than a U87 or a KM84, And under $1000? If cserrano or mics can't help you, God help you.

Current list of mics that I am now considering and prices I have found them for:
- C414 B-ULS $800 - TLM-107 $950 - Hesierman Type 19 $999 - Gefell MT71S $925 - OC818 $950 - UT FET 47 $900 - Chandler Type L $789 - Vanguard V4 GEN 2 $700
Some of these may not fit the “workhorse” category but I find them to provide something sonically desirable over my current XLS.
Wish I could demo them all but even VK doesn’t have them all at once and suggested I buy them each at a time, then return what I don’t like. Sounds tedious, time consuming, and like a lot of money.

The AT 4050 mics are sort of a workhorse mic. Not unbelievably great on anything, but sounds good on most sources and rarely bad. However, when I had my pair of 4050s, they got knocked out by my pair of Gefell UM70s.

I have the UT Fet 47. Sounds great on vocals IMO and "ohhhh... now I get why this is a thing" amazing on kick.

The former gear pimp in me is coming out here The uls isn’t going to be that different from your xls, but it’s a classic. The Neumann TLM’s any with a 10x are really overrated price point mics trying to live one the rep of the classics. IF I want the sound of a classic Neumann for under a $1K it’s going to be the following The Gefell MT71s it’s the classic M7 capsule The Gefell 930, a modern Neumann If I wanted a u87 I would grab the Beesneez, Ben is going to give you the quality of the original with the support of a much higher priced mic. The United FET is damn good for the $ but, if you are going for a 47 FET, for $1500 ( yeah over budget) the Lawson gets you entry into a system FET / tube 47/251. And 10 day trial! Some others to consider Sony C38’s seam to be around 1K used these days, yeah it’s all about condition but it is a classic FET mic. Griffon GMT12 a FET C12 that Hudsonic likes. I really want to try one. Dirt cheap sub $500 used Sony C80.

The 4050 is the only name-brand mic I've ever used (I rented one for a period because I was thinking of buying one) that really didn't do anything for me, at least on vocals. I might have gotten a bad one, but it got crossed off my list after that.

Narrowing it down.
Heiserman Type 19 - $999 Gefell MT71S - $925 UT FET 47 - $900 TLM-107 - $950 Vanguard V-13 Tube-$900
The Gefell may be a bit bright for my tastes.. I know the proximity effect would be beneficial, but it seems that wouldn’t suit “utility” as much as i’d like.
The 47 seems very stylized, and probably not as rich as an actual U47.. don’t know. So I would say my strongest contenders now are the TLM-107, V-13, and the Type 19

Also if you're looking at this C414 B-ULS on eBay What if you're looking to avoid a 414 BULS?

What if you're looking to avoid a 414 BULS? If so, that would be a very creative, intelligent, smart, and sonically superior move!!! Not that I'm biased or anything.....

Not sure why Serrano 87 is not on your list given what everyone thinks of it - it screams "workhorse" Cheers, Ross

I've used it on vocal, acoustic guitar, fiddle, pedal steel (amp), hand percussion, congas, electric guitar (amp), drum room mic. Probably more that I'm not remembering right now. it worked great on everything so far. honestly nothing where I wished I had used a different mic. I only have a single right now (so did not try ovhds). The Tape Op reviewer (most recent issue) tried different sources yet. I have a pair of 414b-ULS as well. I like them on some vocals, sometimes acoustic guitar, drum overheads (definitely) but I've been pulling out the Chandler more often than those. my $0.02

Grab a used Lauten Atlantis. 3 voicings make it incredibly versatile.
Also, the ADK TFET series are really nice, but you should know the sound you’re after before picking one. The 67 is probably the most general use.

Also I feel at this level these mics it starts to come down to taste and not so much which is actually better.
