There's always a lot of Axe FX II/ III on sale on Reverb UK. Some people want almost the same price as a new one - strange as they are available in the UK for next day delivery. I was initially a bit put off that there are so many for sale second hand, but it's also true of Kempers, Fender Tone Master. I guess it's just the nature of digital devices, people use them and then move onto something else. The sweet spot for a bargain is definitely the Axe FX II - they come up at some great prices. John, are the amps and FX in the FX II the same as the III and there's just less processing power? Resale of the current units has always been strong. They used to have long wait lists and used prices would practically be the same as new prices. There's different versions of the Axe-FX III as well: Mk I, Mk III, Mk III Turbo. The older units like the Axe-FX II (edit. wrote III by accident)and AX8 had their ARES modeling before getting discontinued. I think the Axe-FX III (edit. mixed up numbers) and FM3 started with ARES modeling, but got updated with their Cygnus modeling early on. I finally caved into getting a FM3 in 2022. I've only experienced the latest modeling from them. The old Fractal units won't have the new models or algorithm improvements from the firmware updates over the past few years. Most of the amp models are on those older units, just in an older form.

I meant the II had ARES before it got discontinued. All of the III units still get the same firmware.

Axe2 reached end of life with ARES 2 firmware 2019 (processor limited) - and the number of improvements since the introduction of the Axe3 line is significant enough to warrant getting a current model IMO. There are more amp models, the dyna-cab libraries and numerous "upgrades" to the algorithms for almost all the amps and effects that make the current versions a better choice (plus access to continuing firmware updates). I still have my Axe2, kept as backup when I went to the Axe3 - but it is noticeably more "digital" sounding (again IMO).
As to keeping external pedals, the Axe3 does seem to take pedals well - Brett Kingman does a lot of pedal demos thru his AxeFx rig
and here's a tour video of Neal Schon's FM9 touring rig with external pedals

Fooling around this am with the FM3...
I gotta say...so far my favourite clean fender amp is the Blues Jnr with matching Dyna cab 1 X 12 with dynamic mic 2 and ribbon blended... Sounds killer...pretty blown away by this thing.
cheers

(Or Neunaber, etc.) I love those kinds of reverbs in the right context. (Though I did eventually sell my Blue Sky - I wasn't using it enough to have $300 wrapped up in it...)

All those Strymon pedals are just industry standard it seems. I had the Mobius and the Tape delay one.

(Ownhammer deluxe tweed IR). wiz - can’t remember what the knobs are called, but in Axe Edit, pull up the Tweed Deluxe and then the “Ideal” tab on the amp. There are two gain knobs. Crank the one on the right all the way up, then bring the left one to about half way. Should be edge of breakup or even clean…now if you want more dirt/gain, start pulling the right volume down slowly. It’s a weird anomaly with the tweed deluxe apparently, but I couldn’t make a useful cleanish sound out of the thing until I figured this out. worshiptutorials.com/?s=Laurel

The Softube Engl Savage mk II can do it all: cleans, early rock n roll honky tonk crunch, Marshall crunch without the brain drill mids, high gain. Of course it’s from a relatively “processed” sounding brand of pcb amps that are still made by the original company but with tube quality tanking, poor build in former workhorse amps, outsourced builds not just to Asia but to OEMs like BAD, and the rise of modelers what can you do? At least NeuralDSP is made in Finland.
