So I love my km184s, but since getting my Stager ribbon I’ve found I much prefer instead of an xy (on acoustic guitar for example) of both km184s I like blending and slightly panning a km184 and stager sr-2n. I’m wondering if I’m taking a convoluted route to achieve a sound that I might achieve easier with another microphone. Softened high-end like a ribbon but with the details of a km184? That exist? Or am I doing it right with this setup? Thanks!

I used to have a 184, but since I bought the Nordic Audio Labs NU100K, I don’t really have a need for an SDC. It’s a fast mic like an SDC, tons of detail yet still smooth.

Pearl ELM mics are that territory

take a look at the Samar AL-95 too. A ribbon, but not murky or tubby like some ribbons, and it has an extended high end that takes EQ really well too.

Beyer M160. Great on acoustic and has more top end detail than most ribbons.

One of the Samar ribbons. Since getting a VL37A, I haven't used anything else on acoustic guitar.

Yep, have done entire acoustic records with an all Samar lineup.

Interesting about these Samars! Would these also excel for overheads duties?

Interesting about these Samars! Would these also excel for overheads duties? Do they ever! Every drum session for the past 4 years, I've had them up as overheads. Incredible warmth and a HUGE sound capture!

Take a look at the bumblebee ribbon videos somewhere on this site. The active mic with short ribbon might fill your needs.

Interesting about these Samars! Would these also excel for overheads duties? Oh yes. That's the two main things I used the VL37A for, acoustic guitar and drum overhead. I'm sure it's going to be really good on electric guitar cab as well, I just haven't had occasion to try it yet. Check out the (very affordable) Samar AL95 vs Coles 4038 (which I love on OH). The Samar have so much realism/life. They kind of sound like what everyone tries to EQ their 4038s to sound like. Very similar family of tone, just a bit more open and a bit less tubby.

Pearl ELM mics are that territory Milab / Pearl so often overlooked!

Okay, is the difference between the Samar AL95 and VL37 enough to justify the cost difference? Definitely interested in a pair. Was gonna look into the Soyuz 013 for overheads but if these can work in their place just as great (or better) that’s good news! 184s haven’t been my fav for that.

Beyer MC930 are pretty damped as far as SDCs go. They're cardioid.

It's an endless flip flop.
I used a stereo pair of vintage AKG 451E's
Then moved to an AEA R92 - good for folky toones.
Then moved to a Rode NTV (original with Jenson Xformer) then a Blue KIWI then a Wunder CM7 .... (sounded too BIG)
My current go to and the one I think I'll end up sticking with for most stuff is the beautiful Schoeps MK4 SDC .... combined with a Millennia STT-1 tube/solid state pre it sounds really stunning.

I have an R92 and like it in the side position of MS, but as a solo mic on acoustic, there’s something that bothers me about the high end capture. Are you typically boosting the high end?

I've never tried it for S of M&S as it has a bright side and a dark side .... so that would give a funky odd stereo imagine (maybe that's a good thing!) Using the bright side for acoustic it only takes a touch of EQ to get into the right place. For a pop rock production I prefer the Schoeps MK4 as it holds it's own in the mix yet blends also - great mic the Schoeps. My miain use for the R92 is in front of a guitar cab.

"It's an endless flip flop."
Indeed it is, ever changing...
But that said, for the last 20 or so years I've been using a Royer SF-12 as my overhead mic. I use the overhead as my main capture of the kit, not just for cymbals, and it has been wonderful.
At the moment, I'm using Samar AL-95 as my 2 x tom mics, and I gotta tell ya, they are amazing, and the rejection is GREAT! Wonderful mics! Although I haven't tried them in any other spot since purchasing.
I also own a few Pearl ELM-B, and they are wonderful on everything. But a bit too expensive to place on Toms. They do work Great on Overheads, and have a very detailed, yet warm sound.

Those look great. Not diffuse field equalized. Just expensive
