I've been working on these videos for Artur Fisher of Bumblebee Pro Audio. His RM-6 ribbon microphone sounds quite nice and is available as an easy DIY kit. You should check out this and his other kits at www.bumblebeepro.com.

Here are the other videos comparing his RM-5 (long ribbon) to the RM-6 (short ribbon).

I couldn't analyze the mics, was too distracted by your top-shelf musicianship. ericn I thought the exact same thing!

Sweet videos. Ribbons are so underrated.
RM6 is the best balanced of the two to me. Might have to get a pair. The RM5 would make killer overheads I bet.

Thanks for the kind words, guys.
I really like Artur’s microphones. And it’s been cool to watch his products develop over the past 7 or 8 years. The RM-6 with the 1.2 micron ribbon is particularly nice. Hope he sells a boatload of them.

Do you have any suggestions for shock mounts? I forgot to order them with the mics :-(
Edit: Found the On-stage MY420, looks to be what he sells for it.

Yes. Those shock mounts are fine. A little plastic-y, but they work.

On the website looks like they're using a new transformer which is friendlier to insert into the body. Want to add a pair of these to my collection

had a chance to use them much yet mulmany? demos sound great I have not. I bought them for a big project that's slated for January. I am currently in the middle of mastering and mixing projects. Plus I am adding to and reworking the patchbays. I may drag them out to a live gig on Sunday to here them on elec guitars.

Bluegrassdan, those ribbons sound fantastic. Smooth but not muddy. Full and open bass but still with definition. Excellent regardless of price. Tempted to grab a pair.
Sorry if I missed this, but what were the pres?
Thanks for the posts.

What have you used them on and what are your impressions so far?

Funny enough I wired the transformers in backwards, and didn't get back around to fixing them until after the session. I have been busy mixing and just have some overdub sessions coming up. I will report back once I get to know them. All of Dan's stuff sounds great using them, so I have some confidence to put them anywhere.

Sorry if I missed this, but what were the pres? Yeah I'm curious too on what the chain was going in for the videos. Any Cloudlifters invovled or anything? Not that its really going to stop me from buying some - they sound great and I'll prob grab a pair soon!

Hey guys. All of these samples were run through a Grace 801 with the "ribbon" button activated. No Cloudlifters or anything else in the signal chain.

Thanks Dan. Wondering if you have any comparison opinions with other ribbons that you've used? Im in the market for one or two and am going between these, the stagers, AEAs, maybe the Rode ribbons, etc. I've used the Cascade Fatheads and 4038s quite a bit but not many others....

I don't have any AB audio samples, but I do have plenty of experience with the AEA R84, original RCA 44, Peluso TR14, Coles 4038, and both of Artur's RM5 and RM6.
In general, my observations would be to say...
1. The Peluso is slow and mushy in the low mids and bass, whereas the RM5/6 are punchy and tight in the bass. 2. The R84 is perhaps more rolled off in the top end, where the RM5/6 have a bit more high frequency content (especially the RM6 with clearer transients) 3. Nothing sounds like an original RCA 44. That thing makes a thin voice sound like God from 5 feet away. 5. The Coles 4038 - It's been a while since I used one, but I seem to remember it being a bit mushy compared to the RM5/6
Artur's mics are my go-to Blumlein pair. Stellar room/ambience mics, stereo vocal groups, strings, drums. And the price is right.
Probably would not be my first choice for solo vocals, but hey, anything is possible.

Thanks for your thoughts Dan. Ive had the fortune to use the RCA 44 a few times and indeed it is unlike any mic I've ever heard! Good to hear they're a bit tighter than the 4038s which I agree can be a bit muddy in the low mids for certain sources.

In fact, I did get the RM6 and it's already shipped apparently. Hope you get a kickback for the sale!
If I really like the RM6 I'll probably get another one for a pair soon too.
