Am I crazy in thinking Shadow has done this before? I thought before his incarnation as ShadowK, he was a different username with “Shadow” in the name, then left for a year or two and then came back with the new username. I’m going to miss him - I knew he’d been through a lot the last few years, but it seemed like he’d been in a better place recently. And John, I don’t think Dan had been around even close to 10 years. I’ve only been here for like six years, and I definitely remember when Dan joined quite a bit later than me. He always had a distinctive angle on things. It just got more and more inflexible in recent months. Yeah he had a different username before. I can’t remember what it was though. Edit: oh, he’s back! Sweet. I hadn’t read the whole thread.

Glad to see you back Shadowk ! I won't get too long winded but just know you aren't alone in your feelings regarding music. This past year is the closest I've ever come in my life to just walking away from it all. I think this place is better with you here and I hope you'll be around more.

Crap. Now I'm getting confused. I looked at my "messages" tab and 30% of my recent messages are from "deleted". Now I'm not sure who I was talking with anymore.... Dan? Shadow? Michael? LOL. Oh well... Maybe people should leave a forwarding email when they decide to flame out with a dramatic exit..... Literally lol'd.

Thank you for explaining. If you're willing, I'd like to hear how you ended up this 'apathetic' to music. If you're able to see a progression etc.. Correlations between other circumstances in life? I know firsthand that these things can change drastically over time. It's a difficult one, there's so many factors plus obviously existence in general and the personal side of it which we don't generally go deep into on a public forum. I think the other mark williams is on track though, life can be brutal at times and you just shut down. Although the first red flag was when I'd closed down my customer facing studio and I went into field engineering, I just wouldn't listen to the radio or music. I'd had enough of hearing songs played over ad naseum.
Initially I wanted to be a musician but I went into audio engineering to learn, train and seek the magnum opus of fidelity to aid the songs I worked on but that was a dumb idea. What started out as passion became a matter of critical listening as opposed to emotional connection or fun. I've hand on heart won singing competitions but I'm busy picking faults wherever I can, I find it hard to be objective when it comes to me. Add everything together and I guess it didn't bode well.
About a year ago I got an offer to compose and mix for a couple of Japanese animated series's based on some work I'd done previously, I turned it down. My younger self would have donkey punched myself in the face and said what the hell? Back in the day I was working, going to college studying music / AE / EE then spending my nights earning $30.00 doing live engineering. Ultimately though I think my career has had the biggest impact, too many 80 - 90 hour weeks, generally at the wrong side of the day, you don't get much time to take care of yourself, then there's family, DIY, cleaning etc. to deal with and whatever spare zombie moment you get is left in a daze. Ironically I think I could make a really cool song out of this post LOL..
SK, am I being useless, or didn't you just buy Pro Tools Carbon?

SK, am I being useless, or didn't you just buy Pro Tools Carbon? About three weeks ago yeah, I bought it as a problem solving device if nothing else. The plan was to simplify HW integration and add minimal latency tracking which would make it easier to record or dub. Also for me at least I find it simpler when tracking by yourself to know where you are mix wise early on, whether the sounds fit from a basic fader up / comp / EQ.
In short I was trying to take some of the pain points away but it's currently sat in a cupboard and I've not even opened the DB25 for it yet.

So I was surprised to hear you’d decided to quit making music! I thought the Carbon was the start of a new phase of creativity, especially after posting that mix of the animation project. A few weeks off and you’ll be back into it - I hope

Thank you. As you can see, all of us can relate in some form or another. It's also an important conversation to have, I think we all learn from it. If it's right for you to come back to pursuing music, great. But don't let even well meant peer pressure keep you from making necessary changes, even if that means taking a break, a long break or even quitting, if it's right for you. There is sometimes necessary to make a dramatic change, to come to our senses, reset our compass and move forward. Today, maybe more than ever before, the window of necessary healthy reflection and contemplation is shrunk because of the constant technological chatter around us..

[/div][/quote] Speaking of pain… db25’s constant need to fail at random times. Remember when you could just plug connectors in and leave them and come back 125 years later and they’d be corroded in place but still work perfectly? I kid. I kid. Not about db25 pain tho…

Reflection? Reflection? Well my Vampire cousin won't have any of that! Me? I took a deep look inside myself lately. And discovered just how how shallow I really am.* Chris *On the other hand, if I'm shallow (through and through)... Look out Top 40!

I don’t know over the years Avid has made many want to give it all up😎 Oh you're not wrong, keeping a studio running is expensive, rent, A/C, electric costs in general, repairs, spares and variations of mic's to suit etc. If you're going the extra mile, coffee or drinks etc. again.
So, I decided to go Vanilla. Earn a bit of money back and it's IMV Avid believes that if you're not HDX or TDM then you can kiss my ass. To an extent it's still happening today, you want external HW and minimal latency tracking? Buy HDX, there's still no RTT ping tool and you still have to correct samples in ms. Back in the eariler days, it was far worse as well. I mean sidechaining compensation was a HDX feature. Even the internal mixer native wasn't sample accurate..
Carbon is a cheaper introduction to HDX but even then for any decent sized hybrid studio we're talking nearly $9K over here. That doesn't include the extra DSP plugs nor the DB-25's which are at a cheap rate are $100.00 a piece. At college I used Cubase and I wish I'd have stuck with it, in the pro audio world though especially in the 2001 - 2010 era it was pro tools, pro tools and even more pro tools. It's what I know, it's so engrained in me at this point that I find any other DAW infuriating to use.
