Hello everyone. Hope you all had a nice holiday and are looking forward to a productive 2024. I've decided I won't be along for that ride. I've kept my eye on the forum, but just haven't had anything to say for a while. It finally dawned on me that I'm simply not interested in gear any longer. Gear was always a means to an end for me. That was true back in the Jurassic when I was a working guitarist and remained true as I began learning to record classical groups later on. It changed a bit when my career took me to Lexicon and then all the way through Exponential Audio. I needed to get current on on sorts of things in order to serve my customers the best I could. But I've been retired from all that for three years now, working my way back to being just a plain old composer like I used to be. That was something I was barely able to do during my working years. I'm pretty much there now and I just don't feel any urgency to stay current on gear I don't use. Of course I'll continue using some bits of software (Sibelius, ProTools, etc) but that's just because they're the tools of my trade. Back in the day I used a drafting table, vellum paper and all sorts of fancy pens. I'll take Sib over that any day. RGO has been a pleasant and civilized oasis. I've enjoyed my years here (and stayed on much longer than several other forums I needn't mention). But as nice at it is, I need the headspace to chase my own dragons. You might see one or two last comments on threads here, but I expect to be gone when the ball drops. I'm certainly not hiding: you can always find and contact me here. Hope you all find the preamps, compressors, mics and EQs that give you just the sound you're looking for. I'll be chasing minutiae like whether to use clarinet in A or B-flat. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Michael

Good on you Michael! I think I need to do the same…I’ve enjoyed forums for well over twenty years (my local radio station WOXY back in the day, TapeOp, Gearspace, here) and I’ve think I’m getting to the point where while it’s a great thing to do when the dogs wake me up at 6 AM and I can’t make any noise without disturbing the rest of the house, I should spend my time working or getting back to playing myself. That’s been tough for me being an engineer since all my friends are professional musicians and I can’t necessarily hang with them when it comes time to “jam” but that doesn’t mean I can’t find a way to enjoy creating music again without comparing myself to others who’ve devoted their life to their instrument and craft. I’d just like it to be fun. That’s probably a better way to spend an hour a day instead of browsing forums.
I hope you find a lot of enjoyment composing and it’s a rewarding experience!

Have fun on your new/old journey. I'm sure I speak for many when I say I've always appreciated and learned from your insights. (And the Exponential M7 plugin controller I keep alive continues to be a great quality of mixing life tool!)

Well, I hope you had a great Xmas and have a happy new year. Also best of luck on your future endeavours. However, I have more equipment than I could ever want or need so personally I stick around for the forum members themselves. They are for me a super cool, friendly & easy going bunch..

For someone to supposedly be leaving on good terms, it's an odd move to delete the entire account and hurt the site's numbers. And - hey - if you're going to leave, there's no need for a big production telling people how much you're going to miss them. I just don't understand people sometimes. It's akin to walking into someone's business/bakery and announcing you've stopped eating bread and we all would be healthier if we didn't eat bread. Thanks a lot. And if you're wondering, I emailed Michael and said the exact same thing.

If it’s deleted your less likely to get drawn back in

I can't blame Michael. You are all a bad influence.... or so says my wife and financial planner. Apparently, I can't retire without money, and I keep buying studio stuff. I blame you all! :-)

If it’s deleted your less likely to get drawn back in i still read gearslutz. Just not having an account there prevents me from getting involved in random flame wars that contribute to the gear idiocy. It got to the point in recent years where if you post something technically wrong, inferior, weird, or buggy about a piece of equipment or a plugin as a caveat emptor, you could trigger a multiple page flame war there fueled by sock puppets, paid off posters, and the mods trying to calm things down to keep the sponsorship and advertising dollars flowing.

I can see deleting your account if you used your real name which gets googled and pm'd on the regular...
