Everybody is different. Resolving to not ever come back to a forum for the rest of one's life is a decision that ought to be respected. However, Michael did contribute to the forum and deleting his account makes it impossible to search for his posts. That's another decision altogether, and while it should be respected, I don't understand the reasoning for making his contributions inaccesible. Johnkenn , maybe you should reach out and ask him if this was his intention. Maybe he didn't know the repercussions of deleting his account and he still wants his old posts to be available. If that is the case and you have his permission, you could ask t least change his "deleted" name to something searchable. Another vote here to change Michael’s deleted name to something searchable, if only because of all the knowledge he’s contributed here. Unfortunately, I can’t change it since there’s no account to change anymore.

Or maybe it’s exactly what he said. I don’t think he had any ill intent at all, I just thought it was a bit strange.

Just my 2 cents but I think RGO is much more than just keeping up with the latest gear.

Just my 2 cents but I think RGO is much more than just keeping up with the latest gear. 100% agreed. This forum, it appears to me is a small group of absolute enthusiasts, passion about music and recording gear. My family and friends are very supportive of my music and live band, but have zero interest in the process. And I love the process as much as the music I produce. I can get as excited about a new tube compressor arriving as I can singing in front of 1500 fans. I heard an interview with Gary Barlow of "Take That" fame (he a millionaire songwriter in his own right) He said he had an opportunity to meet Prince! He said, he was worried what he word talk to Prince about and was totally in awe of him as an artist! (who wouldn't) Anyway Gary B said .... He spent two hours with Prince talking about nothing but gear .... Prince apparently was a total gear geek. Passionate about tube compressors, Neve pre's, mixing desks, mics .... the game of inches, chasing the last 10% .... all the usual stuff. I thought yeah of course, Prince is a musician first, of course he loves gear and talking about it

It's a little, I guess just sad that lots of posters both demonstrate and cite the sense of community here, offer well-wishes to OP, and give perfectly reasonable explanations as to why one might want to step away in full. In contrast, one of the few people that directly financially benefit from this site seems unabashedly focused on how the OP's decision affects his business. At least you edited your first post to give a veneer of interest in the person's wellbeing. You know, like a community would. I’m really trying to hold my tongue here. A) you don’t know me, but you’ve made quite the accusation. B) “Financially benefit” are you kidding? I LOSE money running this site. Funny, I haven’t seen you contribute a dime, but you certainly aren’t scared to call me greedy. Hey - if you want to leave - knock yourself out. But usually people don’t announce it and then delete all traces and on top of that, start a thread about how it’s a waste of their time. And btw - I know Michael wasn’t thinking about all this…but I just don’t want people to get in the habit of announcing their departure. Boy, I sure got under your skin quick. A) I don't need to know you any better than seeing the OP and your first and subsequent posts to make this observation. B) You run a business with the goal of making money. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with that. Whether or not your are successful or not, in the red or black, was not my point in the least. If you truly have no goal to not financially benefit from this site, then that sure doesn't jive with the requests to disable ad-blockers, third party trackers, sticky directly imploring members to buy from advertisers, etc. C) Yeah, I could donate to this site, or to a place like givewell.org and have a much more outsized impact on someone's wellbeing. The logic is very bizarre, I should give you money to validate a claim I didn't make. Which brings us to D) would you please stop accusing me of words I (and OP) never said? I count "greedy" 4 times in your two replies here. I never said that, because that wasn't my point in the first place. You are (perhaps willfully?) misinterpreting my point, and the OP's post as well. I can't speak for Michael, but my point was about online communities, the positive and negative effects it can have (others also recognized this, deleting an account to not be tempted to log back in), and that you seemed far less concerned with these items beyond how the affect your traffic and overall business. Look I know I'm tipping a sacred cow here, and the show of support for you is at least 9 times of my post. And looks like it was the motivating factor for some to make a donation. You win! Interesting though that the OP was the only one that liked my post, so seems at least someone valued it.

Just sent a donation, thanks for all you do @johnkenn . It's times like this when I wonder how/why you put up with the headache of it but I'm sure glad you do! Happy New Year!

First rule of the internet - don't argue with idiots. Especially ones that think running an internet forum is a lucrative business, and that wanting to hold a good community together is greedy.

Interesting though that the OP was the only one that liked my post, so seems at least someone valued it. Ohhh no, buddy, you don't get to come onto my site and call me a greedy, underhanded - which you most certainly have done - and get to stay. Do you think this is how I make my living? Really? I make my money from the 15 million + records I've been on. You can go talk about it on Gearslutz. To everyone else - I'm banning this guy. If you have a problem with it, PM me directly. This will be maybe my what - 10th ban in 10 years? So congrats, Boris, you got what you wanted. Oh - and nobody liked your post. Not a single person. Re-read the first two posts. "I need to do the same." Maybe I shouldn't care whether people go or stay, but I do. Not for money - I MIGHT take in $1000 a year in donations. And that's pushing it. And that's FINE. I've paid for this place for ten years, and the plan is/was to continue. But when someone accuses me of being a shyster, it really, really pisses me off. Why in the HELL would I pay out of my pocket to have someone telling me I suck? I'm just not going to do it. Like I tried to say in an earlier post...it DOES sting when a contributor just leaves and doesn't come back - are they ok? Did they get pissed off? Are they ill? I understand that people need to step away for various reasons - hell I do it occasionally myself. But yeah, a year or two ago I looked on GS to look through the classifieds...and there was a long time member that just stopped coming over here, posting away. Or having a manufacturer here (that makes a lot of money from people here) tell me, "Dude, your board fucking sucks." I just laughed it off, but that stings. I've just chalked it up to "it is what it is," and it's part of the deal. But you can't come in and expect to be able to talk shit and stay. I'm locking this thread. I'm not asking for sympathy, or fishing for support, I just wanted to defend myself.
