I never got into the UAD world as they weren't native until very recently but after having tried a good number over the years I've pretty much been sticking with TDR and Fuse. Those two companies cover 85% of my EQs and compressors and I highly recommend them (and not just "for the price").
PSP also have a lot of great stuff too.
I still use some Soundtoys and effects are a mish-mash.

I have no idea what an Octo card is/does. Nor anything really about UAD. Probably not the direction I want to go, but let me look into what that means. Cheers, Geoff UAD has special DSP cards/boxes/interfaces-with-DSP that run all of their plugins. Over the past several months, they've been opening up some of those plugins to Native processing. The 1176 Collection and the LA-2A Collection can both be had Natively now. I recently got both of those for a combined total of $100, maybe? There'll be more big sales over the next few weeks, obviously. I once heard that they were originally developed native, and then ported over to their hardware. Now back again?!?!?

I’ve never used a proper 33609 but I have used the UAD for many years. I really hoped and expected my Stam version would kick the shit out of it but it was a lot closer than I wanted to admit. Though I guess that opens the whole question on buying into the UADecosystem Agreed, the UAD 33609 really is very, very good! I still find the UAD plugins form the majority of my go to plugins for a big sounding "analog" mix. And I have most of the other big collections from Soundtoys, Fabfilter and DMG etc. Plugins like the Motown EQ and Motown Chambers really do have that "now it sounds like a record" quality to them (corny as that phrase is) From when Bob Olhsson ran my informal/one take vocal, through UA's Motown Chambers. I did feel a little guilty. As it was a Stax hit! Chris

And honestly some of the best sounding plugins happen to be less expensive ones. Look hard at Fuse Audio Labs and Tokyo Dawn Labs. Dan has been singing their praises for a long time here, and I have to agree that most of them are very, very good. Toyko Dawn really does make great affordable plugins. I started with SlickEQ (free) and eventually went with the GE because I want to support what they do. I love how you can go between 6 different EQs with the settings not changing. The Russian is really great for guitar solos, I've noticed. The British works on a ton of things. But seriously, each 'color' has made it to a mix at different times. Same with the Malot compressor. Easy to use great sounding plugins I'm a big fan of the McDSP 6030 compressor. It's another plugin with multiple models and you cna scroll through with the settings remaining constant. I got a bug UAD account all at once, and even though there I things a barely use, there a few things that I ALWAYS use. I made a BD preset in the SSL channel that works as a good starting point. The API Vision strip is so easy and sounds so good. The Capital Chambers and Ocean Way rooms are so great and do exactly what you expect them to do. I'm still a Soundtoys fan as well. Decapitator with the Tchad Blake "tight bass real" is exactly the addition I'm looking for when the bass needs to speak (and when doesn't the bass need to speak?). I also really like AudioThing TypeA for the "vocal trick."

Though I guess that opens the whole question on buying into the UADecosystem Yeah - I thought the compression and general tone were similar to my Stam 609, but I thought the hardware added a weight and heft. That seems to be the constant with sw vs hw. Hardware just adds a heft that the plugs miss.

I love the pulsar 1178. I basically use it like I would any 76. It’s got hp sc, different saturation options, over sampling. Love it. I still love the UAD stuff too. No other 76 plugs break up like the UAD one - like for parallel drum bus - crank the input, slow attack fast release, all buttons in. It can mangle.

Is Ocean Way available in native format yet? Ocean Way is not yet native, but Capitol Chambers just got announced as native today, along with Distressor, Avalon, and Massive Passive. AND.... UA is going to be releasing a new Sound City plugin in native format. So that will be super cool, if Ocean Way is any indication of what they're capable of with room reverbs. There's also an as of yet unknown DSP only plugin that will be released tomorrow. Luna 1.5 comes out on Thursday, so that will also be a big update for Luna folks. And apparently various often requested improvements to the DSP GUIs are coming out this week as well. It's a pretty big week for UAD.

I like the what's it called, the Eventide SP2016 for that. They have 6 different algorithms to shove on things with variable density. Same with Goodhertz Megaverb. 4 different lofi verbs that go from short dry rooms to Whitney Houston to My Bloody Valentine.

Nobody knows much yet, as it won't be officially announced until tomorrow, and released on the 14th, but I think it's a safe assumption that it will be an Ocean Way style plugin. Which is super cool in this age of big roomed studios dying and small studios mostly being all that's left. Not that I want these large studios to die, but least with these kinds of plugins, you can record pretty dry and get a pretty convincing recorded at X studio room sound.

Adding a Helios pre/eq to my wish list. Had the Waves one many moons ago, until I upgraded Logic I think and poof, it was gone.

I will sat this after a quick look at UAs plugs. Holy crap they have a lot of plugs. Not tons that run native, but I guess they will add more in time. Cheers, Geoff You can download the UADx LA-2A for free at this point, and from that upgrade to their Mix Edition for $199: 1176 Classic Limiter Collection Teletronix LA-2A Leveler Collection API 2500 Bus Compressor API Vision Channel Strip Century Tube Channel Strip Pultec EQ Collection Hitsville EQ Collection Hitsville Reverb Chambers Lexicon Digital Reverb Pure Plate Reverb Galaxy Tape Echo Brigade Chorus Pedal Studio D Chorus Waterfall Rotary Speaker Oxide Tape Recorder Studer A800 Tape Recorder Gonna be tough to upgrade from that as your starter pack. The La2a is no longer free, so I missed out on that. The mix bundle is $300 and apparently expires today at that price. Pondering. You do get a lot. Cheers, Geoff

I actually pay the Spark subscription for $10/month, just got the Massive Passive, Distressor, VT-737 and Capitol Chambers added today. Not a big sub guy, but I like getting all their native ports the day they come out.
