Well almost. And with the new Mac mini mostly set up, a bunch of my old plugs out of date/Wuped, and the plug-in legend and Black Friday sales threads here have me thinking of splurging out on a plug-in or three. So, help me spend my money!
so what am I hoping to find? An La3a if such a beast exists that is remotely close to the hardware. Ditto for 33609 and/or Compex. I do have the boz Bendeth compressor which is a Compex styled plug-in. I have no idea if it’s well regarded or anywhere close to the real deal. I suppose a good itb 1176 that did a bunch of flavours couldn’t hurt. For some reason I also am pondering a Distressor type, even though I didnt particularly love the hardware.
What else? Maybe a nice set of filters. A vibey eq. What do I mean by that? Well not clinical. Not Pultec. Ok, so far so vague. I suppose I could use something in the API family. Or Quad 8. Or Neve style. Or perhaps something toobey. All of the above maybe.
The one thing I’m almost certain will be coming this way will be the Silver bullet plug-in. That may be part of the answer in the vibey eq search.
Thanks all!
Cheers, Geoff

I found these plugins a couple days ago The neve strip has a Nice vibe and the N comp in it is great. There Material compressor is awsome and both are dirt cheap ! Neve strip 19.90 and Material com 16.60 www.voosteq.com/model-n-channel/Also Klive audio has just released a Complexx plugin www.kiiveaudio.com/

I’ve never used a proper 33609 but I have used the UAD for many years.
I really hoped and expected my Stam version would kick the shit out of it but it was a lot closer than I wanted to admit.
Though I guess that opens the whole question on buying into the UADecosystem

I know nothing of the UAD ecosystem. Or the general, and specific advances in plugins since I was last in the market. I’m pretty out of the loop, in other words.
Cheers, Cheers

Honestly, the Silver Bullet is a no brainer. And I don't care that I'm involved with it. It just IS. Should be in every toolbox. From the EQ, to the Mojo amps, to the cascaded saturation, to the aspect ratio height-i-fier / widener, to the new fun toys like the 12 bit stuff.

The 1176 and la2a bundle from UAD are great, and available natively, with and without subscription. They’ll be on sale if they’re not already.
But if I were you I look for something modern, something that software excels at rather than just emulations. Soothe 2, a good dynamic eq, some type of low end control like Maxx Bass, Subsynth etc

Regarding the 1176, just get the UA 1176 native collection. It has multiple flavors. I don't like Universal Audio as a company one bit, but there's nothing ITB IMHO that comes that close to the HW.
Everything else in your wishlist can be found elsewhere.

And honestly some of the best sounding plugins happen to be less expensive ones. Look hard at Fuse Audio Labs and Tokyo Dawn Labs. @tomegatherion has been singing their praises for a long time here, and I have to agree that most of them are very, very good.

Cheers, Geoff UAD has special DSP cards/boxes/interfaces-with-DSP that run all of their plugins. Over the past several months, they've been opening up some of those plugins to Native processing. The 1176 Collection and the LA-2A Collection can both be had Natively now. I recently got both of those for a combined total of $100, maybe? There'll be more big sales over the next few weeks, obviously.

Cheers, Geoff yeah, I've never owned any UAD DSP hardware (and don't really plan to), so I've just been picking up a few of the ones available in Native format over the past few weeks when big sales happened to show up in my inbox (and if they were plugs I was already interested in).

Look hard at Fuse Audio Labs and Tokyo Dawn Labs. @tomegatherion has been singing their praises for a long time here, and I have to agree that most of them are very, very good. What sounds good is what sounds good. Especially for distortion plugins, compressors doing really drastic sharp envelopes, and eqs with big boosts or cuts or on full mixes. You can click through this stuff and often what's decades old or dirt cheap will beat the latest and greatest so it's really hard for me to recommend anything very distorted or colored that's not either cheap or flexible like Decapitator, Saturn, or Tupe. Slick EQ GE and SDRR2 are both. You can even use Saturn or Tupe to diy your own amp sims.
What I had work recently: Tupe and the Fuse guitar stuff on guitars. Vintage Warmer won out on a vocal bus last year and turned oversampling off because whatever dirt that added seemed to nullify the baked in reverb a bit. I used the Fuse VQA ADM1540 EQ on a shoegaze master that was the only work I got from the ridiculousness that is Fiverr this year. It goes from extremely gentle to something like a sharper API 550 as gain increases or decreases. The sharp treble cut filter from Klanghelm SDRR2 Desk just saved my ass on some guitars. It's slightly resonant with an eventual mid boost should you turn it down enough so it cut the noise and made them pop out a little bit more. I've used the Fuse Tascam as some nasty transistory distortion like Slate VCC but far grittier. as long as the little red light doesn't go off and you don't use the tape, your stuff won't fuzz out.

That Fuse VQA 1540 EQ really is surprisingly good. I like that thing. And the LA4. (And a bunch of the others, too. They're pretty much all useful on something.)

I cannot get into the UA plugs for my own sanity. Simply because they sound good and if I get into their ecosystem, I will eventually need everything to add to the click through distortion stuff production work flow, even the ones that kinda fart out because fart bass and kicks that rip can be cool. I already dropped 600 each on the Sound Radix and MDW bundles last year. What I really need is some more better post stuff than RX like the Acon and HitnMix

They're awesome on sampled drums and VSTIs just trying to make them not sound too fake. Or adding vibe when there was no vibe in the original recording or performance or trying to get closer to a reference.

If you're mostly an electric guitarist, Klanghelm MJUC, SDRR2, or Goodhertz Tupe are superb buys. Klanghelm is dirt cheap too. They're great additions to what is in your DAW. There is a lot to discover in them, the presets are a good starting point, and you can just turn knobs and make your tracks sound better.

I still find the UAD plugins form the majority of my go to plugins for a big sounding "analog" mix. And I have most of the other big collections from Soundtoys, Fabfilter and DMG etc. Plugins like the Motown EQ and Motown Chambers really do have that "now it sounds like a record" quality to them (corny as that phrase is)

I'd LOVE a good Quad 8 EQ plug. I can't remember the exact model, but Elliott Smith shipped a Q8 board to Portland years ago, and it wouldn't fit in the front door of Jackpot's location at the time. I think Larry ended up racking up some of the spare modules from that board, and a couple of friends lucked into a pair each. They're stepped in 2dB increments like API 550a/b, but IMO sound smoother and less grainy. Where 2dB of API's are often too much for me, that was never the case with those Q8 modules.
I use pretty much UAD plugs when I use plugs these days (which is also less and less), and the standout for me is the Ampex ATR-102 tape plug. I think I read that it's coming to Spark, UA's native plug collection, so it may not require an interface or accelerator card soon.
If you're looking for an EQ, I'd also check out DMG Audio's Equilibrium or Equality plugs. Equilibrium is the most powerful and interesting eq plug in I've ever used. It seems to do the impossible...brick wall filters, magically smooth mid cuts, etc. Uses some serious CPU in full quality mode, but worth it if you have the horsepower. Equality is the slightly less expensive version with less features and maybe without the super galactic hifi setting.
