the UA 175/176 are pretty nice. I probably use them more often than the Fairchilds. I've got a $25 off coupon which makes this plug like 15 bucks. Dag, I really don't need it, but...

I actually like the UAD Fairchild. It is useful on many applications. Of course, one can demo it and find out if it is useful.

I got the 175/176 in the big bundle. They weren’t particularly on my radar but I’m quite impressed with them.

Tell me about these, please. If you want a crushed drumbus...that 175 is the ticket. I would describe them both as "thick". sometimes fuzzy. more so than the 1176 (that they are the predecessor of - in real life - not plugin life...)

Plug-in Alliance has most of their stuff at $30 for up to three of their plugs. Until next Friday I think? And, they got me again. Picked up the Chandler amp. Haven’t played with it yet but hoping it’s a bit of a different flavour from the usual suspects.
Cheers, Geoff

If someone sees the Black Salt Silencer on sale, please advise. I think it is $49 currently.

They seem to run frequent sales. I’m assuming there will be another big sale around Christmas, at which time I’ll be picking up Low Control. Or hell maybe the whole bundle.

Quiet Art is having their 50% off sale. Yesterday I was trying hardware compressors at the mix stage for the first time. It was a real eye-opener. All of a sudden my mixes were significantly wider, popped out of the cheap speakers, better punch, better clarity, more natural frequency balance. Anyway, after I hit the commit button, I noticed the faders were moving. It had turned automation back on that I had written with Waverider some time back. And it sounded really good. Stuff that I had been having issues with keeping the volume even now was almost perfectly even. Before when being completely ITB at the mix stage I felt like Waverider and plugin compressors were too much. The plugins that I felt held up the best were MolotGE for tracks and Mike-E on busses. Those must be on sale. Quiet Art also has Defaulter for Windows now and I am going to try that. quietart.co.nz/

What's the catch? (Talking about Wave Rider).

What's the catch? (Talking about Wave Rider). Waverider works through HUI. I believe it has to be the last insert and that you may need to watch latency of plugins placed beforehand. I was working off old automation that wasn't even following the hardware compression I added though. Usually I keep the soft range ratio almost at the far left and loud range ratio arrow almost at the far right. Park level around -20. Classic mode. I'm using V3 but I don't think V4 had any real changes beyond the layout and some updates for MAC OS. It's pretty flexible if you use conservative settings. You just have to try settings and see what works for you.

I set Threshold around -30 on loud and -40 on soft. You have to deactive DSP plugins that are inserted before it if I recall.

I just bought The Farm stone drum room plugin by IK. Been eyeing it up but $80 seemed a bit steep - it’s on sale for $30 Sounds great with the Collins kit in the Hit Maker SDX if you want the big Collins drum sound. Fun plugin.

I am having my usual post Black Friday/XMas hangover. I listened to my favorite of my own recordings from last year (and the last one I released before taking a break for most of this year) , and was reminded that I made it with both A. a minimum of plugins (Slick EQ, RVox, iZotope Doubler, Amplitube, R4, Ozone) and B. Nothing I bought this year is *better* than those. Different, yeah, but largely more delays, more reverbs, more compressors (I think I stopped at two there if you don’t count Studio Max), more choruses, more fairy dust saturation.

After a couple of sales, what plugs do we really need: very few, if any.

After a couple of sales, what plugs do we really need: very few, if any. I certainly don't NEED LTL Silver Bullet, but I was hoping to pick it up by EOY. PA just discounted it $100 for $250, which is still way too rich for my blood. And so, my humble recordings will do without! Maybe next year...
