It's variable and if it only works half as well as the demo, it's a gem!!

I got it while discounted - demos were great. Price is good too. Waiting to use it, and also keen to try it on room mics. My main use would be drummers who hit the hats too hard, and I can't get them out of the snare mics. I hate gating the snare and then having the odd snare with a loud hihat when played at the same time. We are lucky to have such great problem solving software these days.

I bought it. Out of the box it's pretty amazing although I don't always fully trust my ears when first hearing a plugin. I'm sure someone will point out its deficiencies when fully tested. But to the ear it really doesn't mess much with the source sound while eliminating a lot or all of the cymbals. It's definitely worth checking out. I wish Black Salt would create a similar plugin that would eliminate vocal bleed in acoustic guitar mics.

I wish Black Salt would create a similar plugin that would eliminate vocal bleed in acoustic guitar mics. Waves' Clarity Vx PRO (not the regular old Clarity Vx) will do this set to 100% Ambience. It works backwards (100% Voice) of its normal use to kill all background noise from a vocal track. Null points on the mic setup are also your friend, but absent a good recording, this works well. I've also used it to completely remove live drums from a vocal mic and it's kinda like magic. I have Silencer as well, and it works wonders on live drums too. To my ears, it works as well or better than Oxford Drum Gate (which is what I was using) and is MUCH faster to pull up and get a usable track out of.

I have it. Yes, it works great. It's very, very much like a less featured Oxford Drum Gate.

I bought it a couple weeks ago and got a chance to use it on half a dozen drum sessions. It actually works quite well and is dead simple to use. I'm a bit concerned if the gate is fast enough. I'm not sure if there is a look ahead function. If it's missing the initial attack slightly, it's very slight. It may have look ahead already but I didn't bother reading any manual. Drum gate is way too heavy cpu-wise to use on many drum tracks... for me. The other one I use a lot is Cymbal Killer, but Silencer works as well.

It seems to have some DPC latency, so it's looking ahead to some degree. It doesn't really say if it's looking ahead in the manual.

Does anyone know how long the sale goes? I'd like to try it on a current mix, but would prefer to do the trial first.

Did a quick look at the features. It does have look-ahead. Yah! At $29 this is very much in the no-brainer buy category. I have not had any problems with it, other than a GUI issue which I wrote to them about. They got back to me very quickly and told me how to change the GUI from auto size to manual. No issues with it at all.

Just played for a few minutes...but I couldn't get it to lose hats on snare...and keep the ghost notes. In fact, even with the GN thing on or off, I couldn't get it to take the hats out. That being said - I didn't read any instructions...

Used it yesterday on kick and snare - recommended. No weird gating issues

They have a buy 1 get 4 free thing. Pocket Delay, Low control, Oxygen and Telofi I have and use Low Control for bass guitar and it really rocks. It's like C4 and RennBass had a baby with only the features you want.

This silencer thing is pretty darn good. And it doesn’t seem to mess with phase too bad which is often a big issue I have with this kind of processor. Gonna buy me one.

I have the Sonnox Drum Gate, and like it. But this is much less to fiddle with.

It really is but it lacks an indispensable and, imo, a feature every gate needs which is a sidechain. I beta tested Silencer and asked Jordan to put that in because it’ll do more than just the ghost note button and thankfully he did. I also asked him to put in faster attack and release times, it really needed that too. I don’t know if it looks ahead but I assume it does. I’m loving it so far and it does basically 90% of what I need it to do. For the record no gate is 100%

My main drum problem while tracking is solving the obsessively-ringing toms in the close tom mics, annoyingly overtaking the entire drum mix. I monitor back on the Duality with the toms gated, making setting-choices extremely-quick and moving-on. If the drummer plays with a lot of dynamics, it misses a lot. Most of the time, it’s not a big deal though; I’m just monitoring with it, but sometimes it does matter, with the style of music or the sparse instrumentation.
Does this plugin solve my problems easily, quickly, and effectively? Enough where I might not have to think about it at all while tracking, until I have time to get into it in editing; where I group cut the toms when not being played or anything else I might do?

I can't say if Silencer will solve all your problems, but so far it's working well for me. On a side note, I believe I got this tip from Benny Greb. Flatten a few cotton balls and put them in each tom. It just keeps the resonant head from continuously ringing, without killing the sound like muffling would.

The cotton ball thing is pretty subtle, but is still kinda cool.

The Fabfilter and generic gui ones are mid. The original six Sony developed plugs (Oxford EQ, Dynamics, Inflator, Limiter, Transmod, Reverb) are much better thought out and featured than the prosumer also rans they are pedaling now. The Drum Gate is awesome on kick and snare but you have to tweak it too much on toms because you can’t just key it to the fundamental tuning like you can the Dynamic’s gate.

Are you affixing the cotton balls to the resonant head somehow or just setting them loose in the tom?
