I want an AML 54F50. Actually, I want a Neve 2254 but they're out of my price league. Has anybody used the AML? How does it compare to a Neve 33609JD, the current (available/affordable) model. I know they are different, but how? 2254 is a class A path, similar to the 1272/1073 structure. The 33609 is class A/B with an BA640 "opamp" for the gain. The sidechains are a bit different, with a lot more functionality in the 33609 version. I couldn't tell you all the differences since I didn't memorize them, but a large difference was the removal of a transformer from the 2254 sidechain and the transfer of the circuit from edge-cards to a single flat PCB. I believe the AML is very true to the original 2254. I've not heard both so I can't attest to the differences, but I can say that my 2254/33609 hybrid that I made sounds a little different than an actual neve 33609, however the vibe of the neve compressor has always been in how it reacts to the signal rather than the sound of the amps inside of it. It sort of rounds everything in a thumpy manner. Thanks svart, that's great info. I love that 33609 build of yours and I was hoping for an update in that thread. How did it come out? There's a pair of 2254s in the UK on Ebay for 12,500 Euros, that's just insane. I saw another pair somewhere for about 7,000 Euros, still insane. I heard a 33609 a while ago and the only recent experience I have is with the UAD version, but I like the vibe of it. Still, I think I'll go for the AML, looks way cooler and I could imagine it fits better to my 1073s. Any additional comments/advice is appreciated.

Drip sta Leve is my number one these days. The one thing about DIY is that to often it's grab this part while you can.

Thought I'd bring this interesting thread back from the dead. Bought my third (or is it fourth?) Kemper again. Now lusting for another Helios for the fifth time. Bob Olhsson is this one of those "they were great" just because they're old, or were these actually great?

How did I miss this thread?
Sharing your gas helps you deal with it in the interim.
WA-412 and a bigger room.

Bob Olhsson is this one of those "they were great" just because they're old, or were these actually great? We have 2 Helios channel strips at the studio. Not the 69 style though. They are absolutely killer on electric guitars. I don't have much more use for them other than that. I've used the brown faced ones and have the same thought for those. The EQ isn't useful for sculpting at all, and the top isn't terribly great. You can get some big bottom and the mids are fantastic - probably why I like them on electrics so much. If it was my money - Id look for something a little more versatile personally.

Oh, and for the gas...
Gibson LG-2. I should have gotten one years ago when they were more reasonably priced for what was a student guitar. I've got a great Martin 000-18 that works 90% of the time, but every now and again I have a project where I need that old Gibson "wood" acoustic sound and I just can't get it with what Ive got. Every time I play an lg2 or an lg1 they have THAT sound.
A pair of Jeff's BT50's
A pair of Jeff's 312's
Akg D12 - is it just me or are the prices on this mic just stupid at this point?

I actually really loved the pres. I'm talking about the reissues though. They have a really nice lower mid thing that I love and really nice open top. Loved the mid eq frequencies...but you're right. The eq is a little rudimentary. It's most likely somewhat irrational.

Just got a new Apollo, waiting for the free satellite, but I had to get a new computer to run thunderbolt, so there's no change left in the gear piggybank. But.. now I need a preamp because I had to sell my Dizengoff to put toward the computer. I would love the RTZ 9762A, but might live with one of the 1073 clones. I definitely want to try the Stam SSL compressor too. So, I can live with Apollo pres for a little while, but.. I'm gassing for the WA87. I just miss having a Neumann around, and if it's close, I'd be jazzed. Ragan got the Max Mod on his Neuman TLM 67, and that's intriguing me too, but the WA87 is making me a little gassy.

Even if you don't use it every week you know you could want/use some profile of an amp you don't have at any moment in the future. Or make a profile of a killer sound you got to recall easily afterward.

1. Barefoot mm45's 2. Sony c800g/ Upton 251/ Flea ( shootout and pick ) 3. M269/ u367/ u67 ( shootout and pic, max mod I would " settle " for 😂) 4. More acoustic treatment ( traps and diffusion ) 5. New maxed out Mac Pro ( settle for trash can prefer new design ) 6. API 2500 with Paul Wolff de mod ( hey @capi any way to offer a similar based on comp, I know you could team with Mr. Wolff, not that you need any help designing amazing gear 😀) 7. If I had the room I would run a SSL AwS 924 maxed out options and features... 8. New BF Apollo or other expandable converter to expand I/o 9. New guitar and amp ( I'm not picky admittedly not a tone chaser like some but I know kick ass Gtr when I hear it! 10. Yamaha montage or other type of rompler/ sampler esque type synth 11. Hairball rev A or pro replica rev a ( comes built ) 12. Vari Mu style comp 13. An assortment of preamps like Heritage, Hendy Amps ( tube )
And that's off the top of my head not even thinking long and hard...

Right now? Pairs of every Sennheiser MKH series omni, cardioid, and figure 8 ever made to compare. Figure out which I like definitively and if any of cardioids make me happier than my KM140's do.

But I just thought I could live without it. Three times. Which I probably could - but things are soooo much quicker and easier with it. Plus, if I have really bad gas for something else, it's one electronic thing that's long in the tooth but still holds its value.

Ha. I've made the mistake of living where nothing MI, ProAudio is easy to flip for the last 35 years. So I've kept everything. Including every tape recorder and format I've ever had. I've got a pristine AKAI 1214 console with the stand. Refurbed in 2001 with just a few hours. Primo Ampex 700 w/1/2 trk and /14 trk head stack. My original TEAC 3340S. And on.
I'll keep my Kemper and probably get the rack with amp for a live rig at some point.

A Trinnov ST2 PRO A few Josephson E22s A Hammond A 100 and a suitable Leslie. Not exactly considered "gear", but a larger tracking room is high up on my wish list as well.

I'll throw my vote at 2 bus eq and comp. Not sure how bad I 'need' it but the gas remains. So many interesting options. I've also been waiting on pins and needles for the Dizengoff EQ. Not much info out yet but I love my preamps and d864. Hopefully it will be out soon.
