Never thought I'd be doing this! My partner decided to sell our studio's API, and just as that's getting going, a good friend tells me he's selling his very groovy Paul Wolff FIX console. So I'm gonna buy the sucker! Never really imagined I'd be a console owner (always preferred to let someone else spend the dough LOL), but this is a great opportunity so I'm pulling the trigger. Boom!

Fun times!!
What made the API go by by? I feel like one of those 2448’s would be absolutely killer to have in a tracking room.
The FIX console seemed pretty badass the last time I saw one at AES which was a few years ago.
We want more info!!

The FIX console seemed pretty badass the last time I saw one at AES which was a few years ago. We want more info!! Welp, I won't get into why the API went on a public thread. Victim of circumstance, you might say. The FIX is 16-channels, with three submasters (A, B, and C) and a grand master (aka "GM"...probably familiar to you API users out there, and no doubt a nod from Paul!). What's really cool is that each submaster has its own 'flavor': one Neve, one API, one SSL. It's kinda like my beloved Silver Bullet, but in a full console. Each channel has three inputs that can be used simultaneously, so on mix down its effectively 58-input. There's a 500 series slot on each channel that I'll trick out with EQs. But then there's also onboard sweepable HPF and LPF, plus Paul's very groovy tilt eq. The inserts each have a 'blend' control, so you can do parallel processing right on the channel, buss, or master. The faders can be set globally or per-channel to a "0db" mode, which turns off the fader and passes signal at unity gain, allowing for super easy use as a summing machine with less hassle on the recalls. Center section is a Slate doohickey; I'm pretty sure it's the same thing that's installed on their Raven desks. Lotta nice features on that thing. Paul apparently designed it too, from what I'm told. Last but not least: six busses, two mono sends, and a stereo send (which if I'm understanding correctly can also be used to add yet ANOTHER input into the console, adding an additional 16 inputs to the aforementioned 58...not bad for a little sixteen channel desk). All in all, a powerful little machine. While I was once really keen on the visual impact a larger desk has, these days I've been finding myself wishing for more space in the control room, so I'm really pumped to freeing up the real estate. It should allow for a WAY more ergonomic computer station setup (the FIX has a snazzy front panel that holds mouse and keyboard) with minimal neck strain. I've been finishing sessions lately with super sore shoulders from sitting all awkwardly at our side cart so I'm hopeful this helps.

I was a Paul's house a few months ago, and he walked me thru his console literally from initial design, circuit layout and build. It's absolutely AMAZING! Quite a lot of thought went into this new console.
You are gonna LOVE IT.
Good luck, I'm jealous!

Pretty cool stuff! Does it have gates and expanders? I love all the gates and expander tricks but they just don't make many good ones anymore not Drawmers.

I assume this is going in mad oak, not your house or something right? I would think you guys are often tracking more than 16 channels at a time? Do you do monitor mixes through PT and not on the console? When we put in the 5088, we had to be a bit creative when doing the monitor mixes through the board. I was running all drums into a 24 channel Daking summing mixer, then that into a stereo pair on the 5088, so I’d have enough channels for a full band.

Gee I wonder if that desk is a step up from my Mackie VLZ? That has Boutique Quality ONYX Pre's. Specially designed by Bob Mackie. Hmm... Chris P.S. Sorry not currently for sale.

Congrats. That console looks cool as hell. I can see it being a lot of fun to mix through. Nice to see some modern features making their way onto a traditional desk. Looking forward to hear how you get along with it.

I’m not shy about summing multiple mics to tape, so thanks to the tri-input channel topology on the fix, I can easily get a fader for everything I’m recording. But even if not, I can route around the console, mic amp to PT, and I usually use PT for cues anyhow (though I can also do GM to cue via the Slate monitor section). if it turns into a problem, the fix is SUPER easy to expand. It’s totally modular so adding another eight channels just means buying a bucket and hooking up like six cables. Wouldn’t even need another PSU.💅🏻

There’s a good chance this thing might get me mixing on a desk again. I usually do ITB with a lot of hw on inserts; this desk closely follows my ITB workflow with the bussing and architecture, so it’ll be fun to get my hands back on some faders like the old days.

Decommissioned ch 17-32 on our 1608. Going to bring the FIX to mad oak on Monday and start hooking it up. The plan is to keep the first 16ch plus the master section of our api up and running, while I “proof of concept” the patch bay layout and test the FIX for the next few weeks to ensure seamless changeover.
Starting to think about mic amps, since the FIX doesn’t have any on board. Haven’t put much thought into pres in years. The RND 511 is looking pretty good. Loved working on 5088s when I was staff at rubber tracks. Also LOVE my RND MBC.
But those cranborne amps look cool too, and are reaaaaallllly inexpensive. Any folks here have experience with those? My idea is to eventually have 16 of the same amp, so I can operate the FIX like a “regular” console on tracking dates.

I need FEWER options dammit, not more!😂 in all seriousness, I’ve really like all the capi stuff I’ve ever tried and it’s very much on my radar, esp as a novice circuit-solderer to save some bucks.
