* I'm just finishing a record with a female tenor.
Pardon my ignorance, but is this one of those new woke terms (like for a transgender singer)?

Yep Gene and Vincent. I got to be a "Pretend" Heldentenor for a day. (But it was fun ) Back to (somewhat ) Reality. Thanks guys for putting up with the Flights of Fancy! Chris P.S. "Ooh Child"/5 Stairsteps... Opening line sung by female "sister" Contralto/Tenor. She was gorgeous!

OK.....There's about a 99.9% chance my H251 is never going near an operatic singer. So back on track. . Maybe we need an opera forum? @johnkenn

Geez, I was hoping to just talk about 251's - not religion or politics or woke culture wars. Maybe @johnkenn can clean it up. So....I'm still digging the H251 and it's been a couple weeks now.....

Like others I was also surprised at the similarities being closer than my brain remembered (or was influenced via forums) with my OG 251 use limited to once and the Tele USA 251 maybe a half dozen times. I'm really digging A on everything, of course B is no slouch. I don't need another mic but I kinda hope A isn't the 251 as I don't need to be spending any more right now, I have a hunch it is though. I saw someone else was going to host the files but in the meantime here's a dropbox link to them all www.dropbox.com/sh/zxd5f2gihjme1n8/AACTbadVTR819MkOXJkDoMZ5a?dl=0

I'm going to step out on a limb just a bit and say that during the sessions, and immediately after the take, the H251 sounded less like a microphone to me. Interpret that as you will, but it felt more like a record, more like being in the room, more transparency, less EQ'd or capsule affected, etc..
I'm starting to get the feel that some people are going to be very surprised at which is which. Glad I held back for awhile. I will reveal when it seems everyone has been able to listen without prejudice. I know I was a little taken upon putting both mics up together for the first time.

Well that was a damned fine case for buying an H251 if I ever heard one. Which one was the H251 Ward? If you don't mind stepping out.... PS - the H47 had the HK47 headbasket on....

I preferred the H251 on percussive sources and female voice. The 47 wasn't doing Kalie any favours really. With percussive sources, it was very close but I liked the airy top just a bit more today. Yesterday, I was leaning towrd the 47 on percs. With Zack, I wouldn't care which mic he was on. He's a complete enough picture on both mics. For a smaller arrangement I might take him on the 47 and inside a denser mix, the 251 would really help him shine with ease. I could easily see owning the 251 and perhaps not having a need for a 47 as a vocal microphone. Maybe, though I'm quite fond of choice

On topic. Like many I found it easy to tell which was which. That said, in a bare bones mix the H47T is so gorgeous and raw, but when you need the cut polished sound, that 251 sounds beautiful.

Haha! Few are naming which is which are they,,, I think it's easy to tell after the fact, but the reality is there a few folks who are wrong about which is which. I have to admit I was turned around more than once. Then again, as mentioned, I've never owned or used a 251, but I've had multiple 47's and I should know them well....

Classically trained singers have a way of just appearing too..never say never they say! You'd definitely want a 251 or M49 around

Ah, so I did my picks on a different site A= H251 B= H47 Listened on Neumann NDH 30's at just above speaking volume. I need my ears tonight so I could not push it I'm also in the first weeks of owning my own 251 style mics. That's how I'm hearing it. My ears aren't fresh but the recordings are very high quality. If I'm wrong just back a truck up to my property and take it all away Actually I don't mind being surprised. I've never heard Dolly's mic or a real vintage one so I have only ever heard and used reps, including my own. I used the Telefunken replica last month on a job and just fell in love had to have one or something close

I listened, then mixed a song, then practiced drums (with earplugs) then went home and went to my weekly poker game. I remember things I knew which was which, but not I don't remember. I'll need to listen again to remind myself.
I have been listening to Richard Thompson's Rumor and Sigh a lot lately. It's a Mitchell Froom production like many that feature his 251, so I feel I know that sound, as well as knowing my on CMV563 with M7 and I know the similarities to a 47.

Thanks for doing this Bill! I like the fullness of B so I'm hoping it's the one that costs under 5k 😁

Apologies for the off topic replies. I have deleted those posts responding to questions I think the question was genuine. I was also surprised by the response. I've worked with and sung in many choirs, in addition to years of training, and college, and was familiar with Soprano 1, Soprano 2, Mezzo, Alto, Contralto, and 'female bass'. I've never heard of a female tenor per se. But am happy to learn something new! unbeknownst to you, there have been some politically motivated skirmishes here in the past so this: realgearonline.com/post/20127 helps a lot. (Those of us with kids are worn thread-bare at this point also... with the daily 'new ideas' being taught to our children in schools. Sometimes it spills over and just adds to the confusion. The rules help a lot, and I read them once a week. I am no better than anyone and can easily fall into a sense of discomfort when race, faith or core values are attacked.)
