I wish Flea had gone with the original colour body. The white is not right. Otherwise it would look great. I’m surprised as they’re normally so authentic.

Well please all of you take this with a grain of salt since I make the capsule for this mic and this is no reflection on anyone else's product, I have not heard the Upton, Heisermann, OPR, Golden age... but this things sounds like WOW! It is so creamy and sexy that I put it up and sang for an hour straight. It is already my favorite vocal mic and right now it sounds better than my original. I may have to look at some of my vintage's components as they are almost completely from 1959. It is louder and quieter than my vintage , very, very quiet in fact. As I said I have a dog in this fight so I'd recommend you try to audition one for yourself. I will try to make some sound files but as I said I am swamped and don't have recording setup in order right now. Lucky you Tim! It's a good looking mic and I'm sure it sounds great. I know I'm not teaching you anything but for those who don't know. Your 251 has a film capacitor on the output and the flea has an electrolytic or wet tantalum? This alone would make it it sound significantly different as electrolytic caps generally sound more rounded and smoothed out( some might say "Creamy"). Where as film caps(of quality) generally sound more immediate, detailed, high res and forward in comparison, that's assuming the capsules sound the same or close. This is not to say that there's an issue with either choice as both have merit it's just a different sound and a personal taste thing, It's easy enough to change should someone have a particular preference.

Perhaps there are so many clones on the market right now that they wanted it to stand out as an obvious FLEA microphone in photos. I will have to ask them.

Hahahaha. What a plug for your work! I think Adreas Grosser and my own ears would disagree with you. Without hearing the mic I think you assume too much and overlook everybody else's experience in this. Time and comparisons will tell. Perhaps someone buying your competing microphone might consider changing some components to get it closer to the sound of a beautiful mic? Well that's an odd response... A plug for my work? The irony far too much lol! Besides anyone with a soldering iron can do that... I dont think I said anything controversial? and wasn't trying to cast shade or offend you or Flea's work as I said I'm sure it sounds great! I'm merely pointing an obvious difference...Take a breath and calm down Tim.

You should understand that to any non-technical person this is throwing some shade. Your post while innocent enough hints that FLEA's microphone may not be"correct" and a buyer might need to change components in it in order to make it "correct" without even hearing this mic. My creamy description is vague and does not not suggest that this mic isn't "immediate", another vague term. Please get a chance to hear the mic before we start dissecting how it sounds. This is really a thread about the FLEA and not my 251. I even mention that I need to look at my own 251's components and on that I trust my judgment.

I seriously didn’t detect any shade at all… I agree… An odd response, Tim… I say that based on what I see here and without any knowledge of your and opr’s in-front or behind-the-scenes interaction/history; if there even is any at all.

I don't know how anyone could see this as anything but throwing some shade. Throwing shade is not my style Tim and I'm not into trolling otherwise I'd get a twitter account. I merely stated an obvious difference that I noticed between your 251 and the flea(output cap types) and the objective sonic differences between the two. The flea may well sound like an original 251 and your 251 could possibly sound different due to the(not original) film cap. Put the same out put cap in both and they'll likely sound very similar if the capsules sound alike. And it's not a matter of one is better or worse it's a subjective personal taste thing.
I can't see how that could possibly be conceived as shade?
Read what I wrote rather than going on the defense because I had the audacity to post an observation.
Again... The Flea 251 looks like a great mic.
Peace!

I like the color of the Flea but I think it's because I've used the Korby KAT for so long 😁

I am expecting it to sound incredible! The matching color is something that man others have agonized over and a clear sign of attention to the most minute details. But, it is Flea and they are renowned for their work! Some have stated a Flea is often darker than other re-creations or even originals and they may be trying to temper this with the use of tantalum caps as well??? Seriously only asking! Cos as I understand it, the capacitors have a bearing on tone.

I am assuming many others use the same. Andreas Grosser worked out the component choices for FLEA and he was renowned for being a perfectionist. Whatever they are doing it sounds phenomenal and I hope you get a chance to hear one.

Will the Flea 251 be at Namm? Will the Heiserman 251 be at Namm? Perhaps not the best atmosphere for comparisons (noisy convention center) and perhaps in different locations, but it is worth a try! (I can bring my Upton 251 if that helps.)

(I can bring my Upton 251 if that helps.) FLEA never goes to NAMM. Heiserman will be there. I won't personally bring this since I am not exhibiting stuff there. I go to NAMM to see old friends and do OEM work and am usually extremely busy with that.

They are the only one I can think of that carry Flea, Heiserman, Upton & Telefunken. 🤞

When I get my Flea (late May or early June) we're planning a shootout at Royal College of Music in Stockholm. I'll try to get an original to that shootout and the UA/Bock. Haven't thought about more clones but if there's interested manufacturers/parties that want to contribute they are of course welcome! We'll hopefully be shooting out the reissue Neumann M49 against an original Neumann and a Flea 49 too. We'll line them up and get a couple of singers and perhaps a couple of instrumentalists perform a pass on each mic. I tried shootouts before with all mics in a circle, to be able to compare the same pass/take on all mics, but felt it didn't make justice to any of the mics because of the compromise of the positioning of the performer, so the subtle differences between the performances will of course make this shootout less accurate

Bless you for doing separate passes. That's how you do a mic shootout. Stoked to hear this!

IMHO the Bock (and presumably the new UA branding)... Might well be the most different in tone (darker end of Spectrum). The current T-Funk for example, seemed brighter than the Bock. Their 251 model seemed quite a bit Darker to me than it. Tim's capsule that was in the FLEA 12, sounded more Neutral to me, years ago. Feel free to "school me" if indicated. Chris

Chris The Bock sounds darker perhaps because it goes down to 10hz and lets in a lot of bass compared to the others. But with a cutoff, it will appear brighter. The Soundelux versions I have used with the 6072 tubes have all had a sweet high end to them with that bass that goes for days. I believe Bock put out the 151 and some other cardioid variants where the bass is cutoff at 30hz. I sure hope I get to see you at NAMM!
