I'm really interested in this too. I'm looking for a vocal mic and $2k give or take would be my budget. The Pearlman TM-47 is a contender. I'm waiting to hear solid clips of how it compares to the TM-1 since I owned that mic and had thoughts about it. Cowboy, when you get around to it I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on the modded CV4. I'm wondering how it stacks up to your U67. raganHere's a quick mock up of a tune I started writing a few days ago using the new mod on the CV4. The vocal is with the CV4 and the acoustic recorded in stereo beside the U 67. It sure sounds like a big league mic to me. What are your thoughts? db.tt/HqincZ9DI'll give this a listen when I get back to the studio. Thanks for posting it, brother. I'm up at the cabin. My boy's first time up here!

With so many guys here interested in mic builds, I'm curious about the NOS TPhilips 5840 tubes that come with the U17R, and if there's a holy grail mini tube that fits this mic in existence somewhere that's considered better.

BTW, your UM17 is much neater/prettier than my early (serial #10) production version which had a hand-made board (I think Oliver's wife did the soldering)...mine was also an early adapter for the revised K47/M7 hybrid Chinese capsule...didn't have it long enough to make the switch to the Thiersch M7...

couple of +1's here; for Brain Fox, Group diy c12, Tim Campbell, of course, max and his 47 (wow!) if there was ever a time to invest in a good iron and to learn to solder now is it, cat5 encouraged me and cautioned me not to start with teh c12 clone but I didi anyway; only made one mistake but I sent it to Brian Fox for QC andto install the campbell cap. Brain confirmed that the cap and mike was so good that my mike was spot on akg original specs and then I upgraded tubes from Christian and from Cat5 got me a military grade NOs 6702 Ge 1954 tube; sweet ! I'd encourage people to try one of the diy mike build projects ! Did you get the capsule directly from Tim, or did Brian mod it or install one of the ones he had in stock?

that does look a bit nasty kidvybes, but Shannon says the hand made thing usually makes for a better mic.
Funny thing, my mic's serial number is 007, except mine was actually a later model, but Oliver switched the casing to a body that was sitting around the shop just before shipping because there was a flaw in the one he was about to send. I was told that after serial number 52, they upgraded the U17 in general, like the Telefunken AK47 MK II.
Mine has that something special in the highs, much like a C12 does, but I wouldn't complain if there was a pinch more low end. Still, I listened to some old tracks last night, including my 2006 album, Watching the Days Fall, ( done with a U87 in a nice studio), and I swear, the sound I got in my noisy living room with my U17R Blueline, the mighty little ToneBeast, w/ the John Hardy 990+ opamp, was way better, even the tracks with the vanilla U17, which I though were quite good, were a little brittle, and sounded dampened and woolly in comparison.
Definitely stick to the M7 capsule and the BV8 in a build, it'll certainly get you close to something great.

Does anyone have experience with the Pearlman TM47 and or the Peluso 2247LE and 2247SE? Any other suggestions? Thanks https%3A//soundcloud.com/songflowerrecording/chump-manI recorded this vocal using a Peluso 2247SE. Hope it helps you get a sense of the mic. Good luck. Frank

Thanks mjb. Here's the original . This cut was a trade off-free studio time for them and some experimenting for me- because I wanted to hear what my new matched pair of Schoeps CM64's sounded like. I like hearing these old tunes cut by people keeping the songs alive.

Yeah, I have to say the work Shannon does to capsules is on another level then most folks. If you are thinking about having him tweak your capsule / rebuild it. Do it. I've heard about 3 or 4 before and afters and each time the results are hard to believe. Shannon does really great work.

Well, I'm going to put my work for all the observe. I'm just a hobbyist, so go easy on me!
This is a Dylan tune that I did all of it in the home studio.
There's a bunch of mistakes in it, but I do it for myself, and my wife and a couple of friends, so I overlook the mistakes. I'm not going to have a heart attack over this stuff
I like the vocal. but I would like to hear more low end authority in it, because that's where I think I get the most from my "cords". Do you think a 47 voiced mic would get me there?
https%3A//soundcloud.com/ephi82/01-baby-blue-2 I think if you get to Soundcloud, you may have access to more tracks, so if that helps make a suggestion, by of course listen on.....

Indirecty directly from Tim. he had not responded to any of my emails over about 4 month period; ok I get that he is busy but , as I had built the diy c12 clone and had no cap not a happy camper. I was talking to Brain about another matter and I asked if he would sell me a cap given the situation of having built the c12 and he kindly agreed. Normally he would have made his own mike for sale, so i am very much in Brian's debt but of course paid him for his time etc. and that is how he makes his living. i recommend Brian Fox without reservation great to work with, fair and So knowledgable !!

Tim is tough to get, i finally got a email from him simply stating "Tony, you're on the list", that was about a month ago, i figure i'll hear from him that they're ready around....say....Halloween? 8) And that is perfectly fine, they are totally worth the wait, i'm going to build a pair of elam 251 clones, or 1 elam, and another C12 to give me a pair of one or the other. When i'm done the 1st elam, i'll compare it to my C12 and decide which pair would serve me better?

OK, how does line link those Soundcloud files so they show up right here? This is an unfinished mix. I'm still learning how best to dial in the John Hardy opamp I installed in my Warm Audio ToneBeast. I think this is a little over saturated, but if you guys want to hear an M7 capsule and the Archut BV8 in action, well.. here ya go.. soundcloud.com/martin-john-butler/the-kindness-of-strangers-jh-opamphi MJB, when you post, look at the top right on your radio button options, the last one on the right is soundcloud insert, all you have to do is copy the "share" url from the soundcloud site/clip, and past it in here. hope thats clear buddy T

I'm still learning how best to dial in the John Hardy opamp I installed in my Warm Audio ToneBeast. I think this is a little over saturated, if i understand what the tonebeast is correctly, you should put some scott lieber red dots in that thing, the hardy 990 is a very clean/anti API style opamp IMV(even though it shares the footprint), and not well suited for that arrangement.... unless i'm thinking the tonebeast is something else?

https%3A//soundcloud.com/martin-john-butler/the-kindness-of-strangers-jh-opamp In a long country drawl ... well I'll be…
OK, big thanks for helping Tony. I didn't have those icons on my page… until I went to edit..
Like the Duprees sang in "Do you Love Me", "watch me now"..
I'm still learning how best to dial in the Warm Audio ToneBeast with the John Hardy opamp I installed, so this is an unfinished mix and the vocal is perhaps a little over saturated, but for the guys here who'd like to hear the "U47 like" Thiersch M7 capsule and the Oliver Archut BV8 in action, well.. here ya go...
* kcat, cowboy, just did this new vocal last week with the U17R Blueline, I think maybe it's breaking in or something, because it sounds better than my album did to my ears now..
** Tony, I still have the 731 style opamp available on the ToneBeast, as well as the 990, so I have a clean or dirty option. I'd say the John Hardy 990 is more "Hi-Fi" than clean, so far at least.
