I do tend to favor a "set it and forget it" kind of mentality - but it's been forged by my own gear limitations and availabilities, and veers towards what I want to hear. It's not going to be the same for you or CLA or Pensado or anyone else.
When I set up an EQ for "set and forget" - I use that particular EQ for the vibe and tonality it brings. If I need another little nip or tuck, I tend to put a software EQ after it for the nip/tuck, and leave the general slope of the hardware EQ alone. If it's way off, I switch to another unit that's set up decidedly differently.
For vocals, I like the Miad LCPQ4040's, and also API 550A's. But then....I'd love to have 8 of each and I'd use em on everything. LOL

BAE 1084s, CAPI LC25s. I mainly track drums and between those two I am well covered

Nope. My EQ's are stylistically and instrumentally flexible. My continued usage on a particular subject may be frequent, but I might just as easily change it up next time. Old Skool. Plus - my choices are most decidedly "non" classic. i.e. - I NEVER use a pultec on the mix bus, and never on vocals. LC40 never on kick drum. Etc..... Thanks for the insights drbill and others. My question stem from a reading earlier that some of the professionals have set-and-forget setting for outboard units, mostly compressors (thought you also mentioned this somewhere), and gain stage into them. I assumed this would match towards particular sources, and was wondering there would be similar mapping for outboard EQs as well. It is interesting to know your non traditional choices (and understand it as - once you know your tools you can flex it to use on any source).
Do you (or anyone else) gravitate towards any particular outboard EQ in your arsenal for vocal duties?
For tracking, it's pretty common for me to use "set and forget" settings on my Wunder EQ, which sounds phenomenal on vocals. I have it parked at the same settings (HPF on, low shelf cut, high shelf boost), and I'm only ever switching the EQ on/off or individual bands on/off. If you're using the same mics in the same room all the time, it makes sense that you'd eventually find EQ settings that just work. But I agree that for mixing, there's no one-size-fits-all EQ for specific genres or instruments. Sometimes a Pultec sounds great on the stereo bus, sometimes Sie-Q sounds better, and sometimes it's literally just Pro-Q (or no EQ at all). All depends on what's happening in the mix.

I’ve noticed being a rookie, having unfettered options like say Fabfilter eq is difficult to deal with. I thought I could replace my Sontec with the Fabfilter... but shooting it out against the Fabfilter, even trying to match Q's and frequencies, in blind tests we chose the Sontec every time. The 250EX still has as many options as the Fabfilter... but you can turn both hands on the knobs and maybe the tactile experience would help? The Fabfilter is great, but boosting on the Sontec is much sweeter sounding... even though it was designed by Burgess to be a more transparent EQ... it has such a sweet & magical sound, amazing filters. The IJ Research MEP250 is also incredible -- sounds a bit different but also great, can change the sound quite a bit depending on what op amps you have installed in the circuit. The Curve Bender too... even having it at the end of the chain for texture and color... I really love the EQ on Calrec PQ 1161s... sweet inductors... sound amazing if you are wanting color. Also to go along with what others have said, vintage api 550a's are great Geoff has a sweet EQ on his Aurora GTQ2 MKIII's

I’m loving my ADM 1540 eq’s.
I have a 12 channel desk full of them that will be going in the studio as a drum tracking sidecar, and had 3 spares laying around so I racked them up to use while I wait to build my room.
They are seriously sweet. Only gripe is they are stepped in 2db increments and it would be really cool to have them in 1db steps to throw on the master bus. But I do that sometimes anyway to great effect!

My Original ISA Focusrite 110's cover everything and incredibly sweet on any source, I wish I had more ISA channels. The ISA's are very difficult to come by for a decent price, and in good working condition. I also use some Oram EQ(MWS), and the RND5033's. Looking to add some API 550's, 560's and some CAPI LC's for the finish.

How about best hardware eq for tracking bass guitar, something to cut some low mid mud? I track often with an A Designs EM PEQ. There's a Crane Song Falcon in the chain. I don't do cuts per se during tracking. There's some of that simultaneous cut/boost thing going on, though: 100 and 3k or 5k. I "clean" it up later in the mix context.

Well after much debate, I’ve ignored all your recommendations and ordered a used Electra. The main attraction for me is it sounds really easy to find the right frequencies for some reason, at least in the demos that is my impression. I’m going to be needing another 500 rack ASAP!

I know this thread is more about EQ, but I have to mention a recent rock project I did and used a RND 5043 and a RND 5033 on a rock vocal, damn...It fit the track perfect! I tried other more expensive options, but damn again, these RND's will stay with me because they just always seem to work, and not just on a vocal.

Agreed…I use the MBP to track sometimes with 5033s. Hard to argue with. I keep expecting RND to show up with a new, fancy (possibly unaffordable) rack mount eq since the 5033s were discontinued. Fwiw, if they repackaged the 5033 into a 2 RU for easier controls, and I dunno, made a few of the freq points dynamic, and made the HF/LF individually bypassable, I’d pay an inappropriate amount of money for it.

Well I ended up ordering a 1073 line in EQ kit from AML. After doing bunch of digging it is a shame no one is making an affordable 1084 eq ! Like this perhaps ? ez1084-500

I think 550As are my most used general purpose EQ. I find them to flexible enough to be useful on just about anything, but broad enough to be musical/not get you in trouble. I also like how they can soften transients a bit. I have a 5500 that also gets used quite a bit, but I think the 550As sound a bit better. After that, I really like an EQP1A... it just always gives the source "that thing".
I do have and like other EQs for specific things, but don't necessarily find them to be all rounders in the way I find 550As to be.

Must have hardware eqs in 2022? None. You're buying a BMW because you can't handle a Honda. No.
