Is there a way to temporarily disable UAD plugs? Let's say I have a song almost finished, have some plugs on the tracks and want to do a new track using the 1073, but I'm out of DSP power. I'd like to be able to disable all UAD plugs in the DAW with a click, use the 1073 to print on the new track, then turn my UAD plugs back on.
Better yet, it would be cool if there was an option for the Apollo to allocate enough dsp power for the console plugs, automatically disabling only as much dsp power as needed in the console, then return to previous settings when finished.
One answer is of course, get a Quad or an Octo card or a satellite, but I can't manage that right now..

My buddie runs Sonar and can "freeze" the UAD tracks, which is basically printing them to free up the card with the ability to go back and unprint. Pro Tools apparently doesn't have this option. Not sure about others.

I use Logic, and I believe you can freeze tracks, but I haven't done it for a long time. I would want to be able to do it on say.. a dozen tracks simultaneously if possible, otherwise it would take just too much time. It would be better if turning of the plug in the DAW freed up DSP power, but it doesn't as far as I know.

dude, just Bypass the plugin in logic. that'll unload the DSP being used by the plugin.

Thanks matkat, you sure? I always thought that when bypassing, the plugin stays activated even though bypassed.

You can offline render, so in essence, yes.

I freeze in logic all the time (not UAD, when I owned UAD I was using Sonar, and I froze them then) just set the freeze option to post fader Martin, I am freezing and unfreezing all day long. Just make sure the song length isn't ridiculous and do it.
8)
cheers

pull up the UAD meter app, and watch what happens when you bypass plugins. for me, the DSP usage drops.

If you have a standard chain of plugins you run on your tracking files, you might consider batch processing before mixing.
