These days I look at it this way Chungr, Jeff , Drip, ect are No different from Fern, Retro, except they are not investing in the manufacturing ! DIY is great if you have the time and really don't have a problem screwing up and going back learning what you did wrong !
I say this time and again, Look if I can do it with one hand that's missing, a thumb , the next fing and only have sensation in the pinky. plus a scratched Cornia, I think pretty much anybody can physically do this. It's more about the mentality, it is going to take time, at some point you will F up ! You have to figure out what you did wrong! When you buy a new piece, you buy the expertise , support and the ability to plug and play!! This isn't brain surgery and I know a brain surgeon who would rather buy a new Neuwmann !
I also come from the time when a studio didn't buy cables , Your first job in audio was fixing or makeing cables, and then just couldn't justify paying for somebody else to do it, ( even at dealer way off sheet prices)!
