I can’t figure out why that OWC dock is so expensive. I just bought an $80 thunderbolt dock that has 3 USB-A ports, Ethernet, HDMI and SD card slots. It’s plug and play so no driver was needed. I’ve successfully hooked up a display and a keyboard controller and mouse and keyboard all at the same time with no issues. You should be able to spend $50-$80 on a dock. I think some of their products are made in the USA. The ones made in Asia are much more affordable.

How many TB outputs does that $80 TB provide? That's where the cost is -- although I don't understand why. I bitched about the cost of TB docks in another thread. I'm baffled!

Quint, remember Apple has pretty good sales support that can explain the Apple are difference. I think they have different products such as a three year option, or a monthly price where support just continues indefinitely. Regarding the SSD. You might fit the majority of what you do in a 500gb capacity, but it's good to remember that if storage exceeds 400gb and gets closer to the max, performance drops overall. It's a quirk of this tech, that means it's always safer to get larger to ensure good speed. External drives work fine usually. Yes. That's why I think I'm going with the 1tb internal and will use externals for the rest.

How many TB outputs does that $80 TB provide? That's where the cost is -- although I don't understand why. None. I guess that's the big difference! I also noticed that mine is actually USB-C, not Thunderbolt, so that's another big difference. But it works perfectly plugged into the the Thunderbolt port on the Macbook Pro. So yeah, it seems the Thunderbolt protocol is probably what's so expensive. With these new macbooks, they have more Thunderbolts than I need, but have zero USB-A ports. My only Thunderbolt device at the moment is my interface. Meanwhile, all my other accessories and hard drives use USB-A. It would've been nice if these new Macbooks came with even one USB-A. If you need more Thunderbolt ports, then the OWC might be necessary, but if you need every port except thunderbolt then you can probably just get a much less expensive USB-C dock. Here's the one I got. The laptop sits right on top of it which is pretty slick because it doesn't take up additional desk space. Three USB 3.0 ports, one 4k capable HDMI, SD and micro SD, ethernet, and a 3.5mm audio jack. www.bestbuy.com/site/j5create-usb-c-4k-hdmi-docking-station-grey-black/6464951.p?skuId=6464951

Based on what we can extrapolate from the prices of the M1 Pro MacBooks, what's a ballpark price you might expect to pay for a Mac Mini M1 Pro (10 core) with 1tb SSD and 32gb ram?
I know the M1 Pro Minis aren't out, which is why I'm speculating on price.
Am I kidding myself to think this will be under $2k?

A guess but 10 core and 32 gig, I think maybe you can already see the premium charge for upgrading the m1 chip and the ram.

So current mini with 1 Tb drive is $1100, and if you upgrade the mbp to your specs you are adding $1000, so maybe Apple won’t want mini to break $2,000, but it always charges a lot for upgrades: don’t bet the farm on your under 2 g’s hope !

Where are you seeing the 16gb 1tb Mini for $1100? That's not a bad price, considering that the normal price seems to be $1300. As for the 13" M1 MacBook price, the 16gb, 1tb M1 MacBook goes for $1900. So I suppose you could say that your paying $600 for the 13" screen on the MacBook. The 14" M1 Pro MacBook Pro (10 core CPU) with 32gb ram, 1tb SSD goes for $2800. So, subtracting $600 (plus another $100 for the larger screen), I suppose you could say the M1 Pro Mini with the same specs might go for around $2100. Let's hope for some sales when the new M1 Pro Minis come out. Maybe they'll go for $1800? . In any case, the extra TB ports on the M1 Pro will keep me from having to buy a $200 dock. Either way, this sort of helps me determine whether or not it's worth waiting for the new Minis to come out or to go ahead and go with the current M1. That price you mentioned might sway me, if you can actually get a 16gb, 1tb Mini for $1100.

You don't have to be affiliated with an institution and they don't ask for verification. My opinion is if you do any type of private instruction / lessons then you are a teacher and qualify. They made the rules you may as well use them to your advantage.

USB-C can incorporate a lot of technologies. PCI Express, DisplayPort, HDMI 2.0, USB 3.1, USB Power Delivery... But it doesn't have too. Some PC TB cables, fi, don't support DisplayPort. HDMI could have audio, or not. For me, that's the major problem with USB-C. You can no longer see what a cable, or a dock is doing exactly. When it comes to docks, it's even worse. A typical dock with ethernet might support NetBoot, or not. It might work with AVB, or not. Manufacturers often remain silent about the hidden parts of this tech, making it next to impossible to compare products.

I've never had a Mini,....is the ram and SSD in the current M1 Mini also fixed/soldered in place like the apple laptops or is it possible to easily upgrade those yourself on mini's?

Nope, soldered and ram is integrated into new soc architecture, so order it the way you want.

Thanks Kcat, I kind of thought that would be the case but wasn't sure. I'm looking forward to the processing power of a M1 pro but will miss being able to do my own upgrades like on older macs.

yeah, I still have a mbp i7 2012 that plugs along just fine too but I have to freeze in PT using a number of plugs, or print using heavy Vi's. Not sure on the M1 vs M1 pro question,....on average, how many VI's and plugs per song are you using on the M1 without having to print or freeze roughly?

It's Saturday night, and I've been drinking...so, drunken reality check: just wanna point out that the KCat and I have been enjoying our uber-superlative M1 minis for the last 8-9-10 months while the rest of the party is trying to decide if they should wait for some hypothetical release of a better version. There are no more M1 Minis available on the apple refurbished site. That easy $150-$250 discount has passed. It's only old intel platforms there now. Love, D-Bag

Ah never had to print or freeze but am running logic and a mix of UA and other plugs.
I don’t use a lot of vi but do have one song with multiple vi keys, synths and I always duplicate logic drummer into a midi part and use ssd drums.
I have an m1, 256 , 16g ram, only system problem I ever had on it or my mbp turned out to be an older external drive. I use an older usb dock, two monitors, Aurora n, UA octo, magic keyboard and trackpad, the usb drive with 10 ports and an Arturia 61 mkii.
The m1 has never broken a sweat, I have never heard the fans come on, nor seen major cpu usage: it just works.
