My M1 Mini is just showing up since they clean up Logic and OSX from bugs. Projects which have been maxed out on my old intel run at half power of the M1. So mh do I need 10 times of this power.
One thing is for sure it will close the gap between plug ins and hardare even more. The DSP power we have the more precise the simulations will become....

I agree, a current m1 chip with 16 gig of soc ram is more than enough power fir most people, especially if you run logic as it is optimized for apple os.
I am just curious how the next mini is configured .

Does anyone remember how long it usually is from a apple spring product announcement in March/April, to when you they are available for order usually?

I might be interested in selling my M1 Pro laptop for a new M1 Pro mini. Could make some money on it I would guess…idk, though because surprisingly I’ve been enjoying the portability more than I thought I would.

I have often wondered if I would use a laptop.... you know, as a laptop. In what scenarios are you finding you pick it up and take it out of the studio? When you do, what are you monitoring through? cheers Wiz

I have a 2010 17" model (it's coal fired!) which has been great over the years in that I can go from Australia to New Zealand and record my friend in his house or just simply go to a place where there's a great piano ; it's not something I'm doing often but the option is there as well as using the screen for a separate view back in the studio, so a laptop has been good value IME. - I do take a separate keyboard and mouse as I cant stand working with the on board options though.
Having said that, I'm poised to to replace the ageing 17 " with probably a new mini of some description mainly for cost savings . I could take a mini internationally ( when we're able to fly again} and my client could arrange a screen at his end. Locally for piano recording it's not too onerous to carry a screen.
As to monitoring ,I'll take the best cans I've got and if it's local I may take the Neumann 120's, though I trust the cans so it's not truly necessary unless it's a longer gig ; however plastic P.A. speakers have also done the secondary reference job if they are on hand.
Cheers, Ross

But there have been a couple times I’ve thought, oh I can just bring it downstairs…and it’s big as hell. But yeah, I don’t know if it’s really possible to do any work on it somewhere else without all the dongles and Hard drives.

I'm still back on Catalina. I want to try the update, but I have a few current projects that I can't risk losing any plug-ins, even if for a day. It seems like I never have any days where I don't have some project on my schedule. It's a good problem for sure.

I'm waiting for the iMac Pro with the M1X chip.... can't wait.
It's gonna hurt the wallet badly but from all of the benchmarks I've seen there shouldn't be any mix it can't slap around.
I can probably get $2500 for my 2017 iMac Pro, so I suspect that will be about half of the money battle.

It seems like I never have any days where I don't have some project on my schedule. It's a good problem for sure. I was worried about updating to Big Sur from Catalina but it went surprisingly well. I have plugins by everybody as I'm sure all of you do and there were no issues. The only reason I did was because the latest Logic versions (10.7 and up) require Big Sur. I did make a bootable backup with Carbon Copy Cloner first. And I won't be updating to Monterrey for at least a year or so as I like to be on the back end of the OS upgrade timeline just to let Apple and all the software companies work out all of the bugs before I jump.

What's up with Soundtoys Kcat? I use their Echboy Jr. all the time and wouldn't want to lose it. That things just works and takes only seconds to dial in.

Can someone explain Applecare and Applecare+ to me? I've tried doing some reading about it and it still doesn't seem super clear to me. The prices also seem to be a bit of a mystery.
1. Applecare is free, right? 2. How long does Applecare last and what does it provide? 3. How long does Applecare+ last and what does it provide that Applecare doesn't? 4. What would Applecare+ cost for a new M1 Mini? 5. Can Applecare+ be purchased for a used Mac? 6. I've seen some warnings about repair issues if you buy a grey market Mac. Should I be worried about buying a used Mac from B&H, since they indicate that they do sell both domestic used Macs and grey market used Macs, without differentiation. 7. How would Applecare+ work with a grey market used Mac? 8. Should I even care about Applecare+ or feel compelled to buy it?

@martin I think ST are just not Monterey certified yet , you could go to its website to confirm. Quint you can get applecare for an apple refurb computer but I don’t think private used. Aren’t you just extending the direct support , call/email and the warranty out three years : seemed like a good idea and not costly vide the new m1/soc computers as they were unproven. It is transferable though, so if you find a used apple with applecare, it can be transferred to you by the current owner through apple.

“We’ve been trying to reach you about your extended Applecare warranty”
Buying insurance for something you can afford to replace is throwing money away. The odds are very much against the buyer.

Sonarworks doesn’t officially support Monterey.
The systemwide app randomly stops processing audio and needs periodic restarts (about every hour).
The plug-in is stable.

Soundtoys is not officially M1 compatible yet. According to their website they are waiting on PACE ilok to be M1 compatible. I think a lot of plugin companies and even DAW developers are waiting on PACE. www.soundtoys.com/m1-capability/

“We’ve been trying to reach you about your extended Applecare warranty” Buying insurance for something you can afford to replace is throwing money away. The odds are very much against the buyer. Perhaps I am misunderstanding you, but if you can increase the warranty duration by 200% for a cost of roughly a tenth of that: how is that a bad deal? With time tested gear, I would agree with you, but with new technology and with extended customer support,I think it’s good value. CS support in scope also extends out over other apple products. I have often called about a logic question, obviously running on my Mac snd always had excellent customer service, apple had logic specialist who are walking/talking encyclopedias of knowledge: a great resource a phone call or email away. Ya apple care is more money but at over 1,000 days of coverage isn’t like .20-30 cents a day, just depends what risk you are comfortable with or want to mitigate .

“We’ve been trying to reach you about your extended Applecare warranty” Buying insurance for something you can afford to replace is throwing money away. The odds are very much against the buyer. I tend to generally agree with this ethos, which is also why I've historically been against owning a Mac altogether. With Macs, you can't replace the parts on your own, and will pay a hefty premium for the privilege of letting Apple make the repairs for you. I would have never considered buying insurance for a PC I bought off the shelf, but then I can replace parts on said PC all on my own. Apple, however, puts the customer in a hard spot, which is why I am considering Applecare/Applecare+ even if it pains me to do so. So my original questions about the specifics of the Applecare program still stand. I'd like to avoid going off on a tangent here. If someone can explain the specifics of the Applecare program, that will give me all I need to make my own informed decision about whether or not it's worth it to me.
