All good lolo So, the overall idea of the 4x1 was from dandeurloo. He and I were talking about things and he mentioned how he uses a hot-rodded Soundcraft to sum his multiple guitar mics when tracking. This way he has one track printed instead of 3 or 4 tracks of individual mics. GREATLY simplifies work come mix time! I told him I could put something together that would suit his needs. We went back and forth about the signal path and decided that uber clean was best for the input channels since the user could get the color from the choice of preamps used. I did want to use the vintage summing though cuz like using a ML2, everything comes out of the 4x1 sounding better than it did going in. I think there is no question that combining these sources up front in the analog domain sounds way better than grouping them ITB. I knew the project would be a lot of work so I talked to a number of pro tracking engineers to see what they thought of the idea before I started. Everyone of them said it was awesome and they wanted one! Sal littlesicily as one of those guys! Signal path wise, the inputs are Burr Brown INA chips with LME49710's after the faders. Sonically invisible. The faders in the demo units are P&G's which are costly but 2nd to none. I do have some budget slide pots samples on order for folks who want to save some $$. Sooner or later Elma will have their Paintons done which will be a major boner! The input channel faders are cut only so unity is with the fader all the way up. For this box, I saw no reason to incorporate 10 or 12 dB of gain at the channel faders. Each input channel has a 3 position HP filter array similar to the VP28 with the exception of it's -12dB only. Polarity flip is via relays. The channel On switch controls a FET array that is 100% dead silent. Solo is destructive so depressing a Solo switch mutes all channels that are on. The program bus part of the 4x1 is 2 stage and mainly discrete. It is very heavily modeled after my vintage API console and very much like my 2-ACA-Bo cards. The ACA stage uses a 2520 style opamp and a 1/2" bobbin, trifilar wound custom output trafo from CineMag. Its a 50/50 zebra lam stack that is steel and nickel. The program bus has a relay based insert point. The output is balanced from the above mentioned trafo and the return is balanced with a Burr Brown INA chip. The program fader comes next and then a 2520 booster amp to a CineMag CM-3301, to balance the program output. This is the same 5/8" bobbin, quadfilar output that I use in the Heider preamps. This box is capable of +28.5dBu in to out before clipping (less than 1% THD+N @1khz). That will hang with the best analog boxes out there! The LED meter board is the same for all 5 positions. 0VU = +4dBu. I have 2 orange LED's to help indicate where most digital storage devices will clip. The top LED is red and fires at +28dBu to indicated clipping the mixers circuitry. The channel meters monitor the input signal only so pre fader. The program meter is post fader only. The PSU is a small brick linear design that is capable of powering two 4x1 mixers. I have a few tweaks to make to that so I am not showing it yet. Nothing major. Mostly increasing the space of the layout and adding some nice big heatsinks. The 4x1 ACA's will be sold in kit form only. I have no idea what the price will be yet. As many of you know, I design the project the way I want it, test, tweak and so on. Once I have finalized things and have it 100% finished, I create the BOM and add up the prices. The metal that is shown is proto not production. In fact, I have not even submitted the drawings for production pricing yet. That should be soon though!

Johnkenn can you please change the name of this thread to "CAPI's New 4x1 ACA Tracking Mixer"? Thanks!!

Sorry Jeff. Couldn't wait.
Maybe start a Fresh new thread? Or JK can just change the name.

Think he's saying that the summing in the box - going through the transformers and op amps will give it that console cooking. jsteiger for the people that don't know, do you have a pic of the faders you're talking about?

Yes exactly! No pics yet on the Paintons but they are considerable deeper than a P&G so they will require a mixer frame that is appx 2.25' taller than what is shown above.

The Paintons are like the old EMI TG faders, right.

Too cool for words Jeff. I'm stunned by the amount and quality of products you keep coming out with. I'm probably gonna need one of those in my audio toy collection.

I wonder if I should come up with some goofy scheme to use a couple of these as a stereo summing mixer...or just wait for the mythical next CAPI product..
