I have a new Aurora n and it runs probably hotter than my tube gear , I could be wrong, but I think it'll depend on the cards installed. I have 16 channels of ad/da with TB3, and it gets warm enough that I keep one slot above it open, followed by a passive summing 1u unit. Not sure if it's absolutely necessary, but I'm also hoping that I'll never have to replace it.

Yea, my (n) with 8 channels is slightly warm. If I get to 32 or so I'm sure that'll change to some degree(pun intended).

Still loving mine. Since getting the preamp card, I'm essentially all ITB. Literally everything I do goes through the Lynx preamps and converters, and all my monitoring/mixing is done through the Lynx. Never had an easier time making music. Could be a combination of getting older and better skilled but having top notch conversion and clean clear preamps sure doesn't hurt! Do you know what the preamp card is called?

www.lynxstudio.com/products/lm-pre4/I wish the sd card was a module, not a built in default. J’d rather lower base price, no sd card and you buy whatever module you want. The pres are well reviewed.

It’s completely baffling that the SD recorder is standard. I bet that adds a good chunk to the price. It would be infinitely more useful to have digital I/o as standard over an SD recorder.

Completely agree, Lynx, must think it differentiates them in the market, for me a complete waste of money. Like you, I’d prefer the lower base price, and choice of features!
I was disappointed when reading the manual, it was almost all about the sd features: who cares ?
But, Love the lynx sound and headphone quality: that’s what its all about !

I think it’s called the lm4pre card. You can fit up to two in one unit, so you could have 8 channels of pres going just like a lot of other interface on the market. Although I would argue that these are better:). Best part is they run with their own conversion so I still have 8 channels of ad/da on my unit!

The two headphone outs are actually useful. I hooked up my Grado RS-1 and AKG K701 and I've never heard them sound so good. I've heard them on a lot of cd players and amps over the years. Probably a few DACs too. The Aurora N blows away anything I heard at a convention or store. So, I will put VSX in one spot and the K701 in the other usually. I noticed that the RS-1 and K701 were showing things that the VSX headphones missed. The VSX have some kinda bass buildup or something like that. They sound congested. The K701 make it much easier to hear FX like delay and reverb. With the VSX, it could be a challenge to get them to blend but also have a lot of quantity. I just chalked it up to plugins sounding flat. The K701 has a much wider and more expansive stereo image than VSX, so you can hear what your FX are doing a lot better. I still need to test this on speakers, but even just using the K701 in the Twin got me decent results before in terms of translation. It's just that the conversion and headphone outs on these cheaper interfaces are not as accurate and transparent as the Aurora N.
Another thing I did was to go back and reread Nwavguy's site about the Odac creation. It took him a lot of trial and error to get the Odac to meet the standards of the Benchmark DAC-1. Lots of good info as to why it's very tough to get a DAC to come close to meeting the specs of the chips used. I read a lot of evidence to further support the idea that this Aurora N is the real deal. That a company like Lynx would have to put in the effort and expense to come up with something that hit the standards that it does. The measurements done of the Hilo on Audio Science Review also support the claims that Lynx is top level stuff.
