Just got Hansa (and the Eddie Kramer but that has its own thread already). So, so cool. I love getting new drums so much.

Mostly been heavily tweaking the Massenburg samples, building kits, mixing. I don't have any of the 'good ones' yet, just waiting to spend that money.
'70s rock EZX is OK. It has some fun sounds but they're not up to the standards of the more recent SDX recordings, the dynamics feel funny on an E-Kit. It's a little more cartoony but there are some character sounds in there. Probably the Eddie Kramer might be the new one to get that could be similar, if I can guess.
Also got Custom and Vintage. Not what I was expecting at all. It's more on the "custom" side than the "vintage" side. Really tight, dry sounds. Muffled toms. Things like piccolo snares and vented snares that go "pop" for example. Kind of reminds me of a certain subset of '90s drum sounds. Not really, eh, classic tones. More modern. Not what I'm after but they're fun to play, and I use some of the elements for kit building.
These expansions seem to be more about the drum tuning, mic setup, rooms, than the drums themselves. For example "round badge gretsch" will vary wildly depending on which expansion you find them in. I find this to be a good thing, getting a variety of sounds that aren't homogeneous. Makes me want to buy even more.

I think that’s because you mean Custom Shop. Which is the EZX made from Hansa no? At least with those same modern built drums.
Custom and Vintage is an old SDX that dates back 20 years before Superior Drummer was a thing.

Yeah I have the old one, Custom and Vintage, apparently. No wonder it sounds that way! That was the sound of the time, one of them.

Very cool, I'm biased as I already ponied up for Hansa, but I just really dig these drum sounds. They have character. I was experimenting with the stock SD3 kits this week, and I think the reflections in that huge room at Galaxy are just too smooth/polished for my taste, it sounds more like digital reverb than any actual room I have ever worked in. Makes me wonder if I actually would dig the Orchestral Percussion SDX I'm jonsing for since it's tracked in that same room.

Makes me wonder if I actually would dig the Orchestral Percussion SDX I'm jonsing for since it's tracked in that same room. They do have character, I love that about them. It's a really cool approach for a library...four wildly different rooms. I also really like the mic options Ilbert uses. It's something I always crave with SDXs. Ilbert has all kinds of interesting mics/positions on the kit, some of them with pretty heavy-handed processing on them (like the Helios and 1178 comp options). I love it. Really fun to sculpt sounds with. And I completely agree with you re: the stock SD3 sounds. I've never used them for anything. Not that they're bad, I just can't jive with that giant cathedral sound that's glued to everything. And I also, for some reason, really don't like how Massenburg does kick drums. Wildly subjective of course and the stock library does sound like nice, real drums. Just not my cup of tea.

whew, that sounds great, man! I’m just sitting in my wife’s car right now with our son asleep in the back, but playing your clip through her car stereo, the drums sit really, really well. They don’t call too much attention to themselves. They just give a nice foundation.

I have it, too. I don’t use it much anymore, but it’s been useful to me over the years, for sure. Also has some of the most usable MIDI of any pack. Chris Whitten did a great job On that SDX.

Yeah. I feel like older...my memory says like the "Drumkit from hell" it was one of their sampler products for Giga/EXS24 and other antique software sampler platforms. But, at this point, I sort of assume I'm wrong about THAT too! Ha.

Custom and Vintage SDX came out in 2009, for SD2. Was it available for something else before that? I do see (in the Toontrack trailer for its release) some language like “Custom and Vintage are back”. Though Chris Whitten (who played the drums) talked about working with Toontrack (if I’m recalling correctly) when they were made.

Again, lots of character. But whereas I did not think I would use the vocal booth, I thought I would use Meistersaal in theory, but in practice I really don't. I'm sure it will be perfect for something one of these days, but not yet.

Can somebody make a pack in sound city already? How many records have that sound in the vox factory - perfect drums room. Neve console would have been great, but anything to attempt to capture that. I need to stop chasing the Pinkerton drum sound already
I love them to death....

My guesswork is they talk the Hansa Studios here in Berlin, Germany......
They did a few works with Bowie in his Berlin period....

Most of Achtung Baby was also done there. One of my favorite albums of all time.

My memory fails me a bit here, but it may well have been available prior to SD2. I used to chat online with Chris Whitten quite a lot when we were in closer time zones. I was really impressed with the thought process he put into making that pack. I believe Peter Henderson engineered it, and I think he did so on a Helios board. I still think that SDX can do a pretty good job of getting that Beck Sea Change sound: Super dry, small room. And the kicks layer quite well with other packs IMO.

According to their walkthrough video from when it came out, it was an EMI TG console. And I agree re: tight/dry. I like the damped kit a lot. I also like to use C&V drums as layers for other kits.
