Just got this. Heavy piece. Looks really well constructed. Hooking it up and comparing to the 1073EQ, it sound practically identical. I’ll do a test or two. Believe the sowter version is $690 and the Carnhill is $590. And there are actually some available! View AttachmentI have a pair of Sound Skulptor preamps. The things are unbelievably heavy. Yeah - guess it’s no heavier than other Neve clones. Although the CAPI VP28P might be even heavier.

Johnkenn have you tried other Neve clones? If so how would you say the Stams compare?

Johnkenn have you tried other Neve clones? If so how would you say the Stams compare? Have I tried other Neve clones bwahaaaha. I’m laughing at myself here. But yes...all of them. But truthfully, it’s been over years and years. I’ll say this about the Stam’s - I really like them. They sound like I expect them to...and the Sowters imo, tame some of the laser beam 1-3khz thing I hear in some carnhill clones. The last time I heard an AMS Neve, I thought it was really good. It’s been years since I’ve heard a BAE. But I remember it being a little darker. But there are SO many variables besides the pre that I’m not sure you can pass any judgement without loving with it for a year. The Heritage’s that I’ve owned have skewed towards the brighter side for a Neve imo. I didn’t care for the cheaper surface mount ones at all. But to answer your question, I think the Stam stuff sounds really, really good. The wait is ridiculous. The quality is good, but things have been rushed in the past. I’ve had a repair done and it was quick and easy which is a plus. Put it this way - the taste level is very good. The execution has had issues to put it politely. Stam knows this, and everyone knows this. He’s still here because the end result is damn good. I hope he can pick up momentum when the plague is over. I’m a fan.

Hi John,
Thank you for posting this
Just to clarify the Sowter is 590 USD and the Carnhill is 490 USD
They are in stock with next day shipping
We are making the first 200 super cheap to get them going. So far so good.

I had a bunch of friends and colleagues who are pedal makers/ guitar amplifier builders either lose their job or being unable to work due to the extremely long lockdown we have had.
Having these 500 series PCB's and designs laying around unattended for a very long time (I don't have the time to build them) it seemed like a good opportunity for them to work from home and for us to have something in stock.
Every unit is made under my specs and I personally check each with the team. I also buy the BOM and transformers so it's the same result as us making it
Actually, some of these guys are much better engineers than me, so they do a pristine job.

Glad that worked out: maybe an opportunity, if you can keep some auxiliary build resources lined up and apply to other production runs to reduce wait times ?

I hope you guys consider doing a 1073 or 1084 500 series EQ to go along with this. Only a few companies have them and they are often not complete; lacking the rolloff or even lacking a transformer all together. I just figured I’d throw that out there.

Used this in stereo along with the EQ version on a acoustic track yesterday. I'll try and post. Just a bunch of chunk chunk stuff, but it's sounds great.

I can't tell from the picture, does this have line select on the gain knob like the SA1073eq?
If so, I might have a pair of Chandler Little Devil pres I need to sell to offset the cost of buying a pair of these.
