You have to love bass players though. You play a part and say itās ok, then a real bass player comes in and they just know what to play and it sounds so much better, finished that first or second take. The second is usually, what do you think of this? And itās usually much sweeter, but dang the first take works too, and I like it much better than mine!

Almost any bass player has the potential to sound better than me. I sound just like what I am, a guitar player playing a bass. There is a huge difference even if we are playing the same notes or part.

If you know what bass part you want, and can perform it on keys or even a guitar, MODO Bass is hard to beat. If you don't want the instrument selection and want software to play the part this might be your ticket.

wait. So watching the video on the BIAB site, it makes it seem like thereās no limitations to it. But wouldnāt you get the exact same sound for the same style/genre every time? Surely you donāt have control of every instrument - busy-ness, dynamics, tone, etc? If so, Iām just gonna get on SoundBetter and accept every job I can get. Two hours and youāre done.
My guess is it aināt that simple.

I get it...Hiring a real guy is the answer every time...but we live in a different world than we used to. I was watching Love & Mercy - the Brian Wilson movie - last night and researching the real sessions...they said Pet Sounds cost the equivalent to $500k today. $500 is a lot to me right now. If I could spend 6 months in the studio with the talent here in this city, I bet you we could put our heads together and fucking slay. But right now, Iām wondering if EZ bass is a more convincing bass player than me. |

I was having this conversation with someone about organ...it's not about whether AI can beat even a run of the mill organist (or in this case bass player)...it's about can it accompany a songwriter who just wants to come up with his song, strum his acoustic, and go "bass....HERE....less busy....ORGAN....THERE....THERE....automate pulling it's dynamics back during the verse"....I KNOW my record here doesn't have as good a drumming as anything I've done for decades. But, I also know I'm GOOD....really good, at sequencing drums--and it(Logic Drummer) kicked my ass in NO time. And the point was "what can I do as one guy with the latest and greatest tech?"
I love bass playing. And it's SOOO important to production. I always say: get the drums, bass, vocal to sound like a million bucks--everything else sounds like an intentional choice, no matter how "bad".
Just like Greg Wells VoicecENTRIC thing doesn't have to beat what I can do with my experience and tools...it has to sound better in the hands of someone who has NO engineering background.
