Hey, I just de-essed that EV 767a audio clip, on the 767a thread I posted recently. Enough improvement to wait on the Beyer M 201TG, for a while. (but not quite enough, to not get one eventually! ) Chris

Hmm... Mic Pre's....fail Silver Bullets....fail Compressors....fail Iridium....fail BUT - I've been holding pretty strong on not buying any more mics..... However : The AEA or RCA 44 is calling my name, and (!!!) A Upton 251. Oh yeah, and trying hard not to buy more instrument libraries or guitars. Sigh, it takes a lot of stuff to make music SOUND great....
I think the idea of downsizing can free energy .... I am in this process for two years now... Everything that is not in use anymore goes and oh yeah my bank manager likes this....
Agreed. Last year I sold off a small mountain of gear I really liked, but had to admit that it was no longer in use. At first it felt a little bad to sell it off, but once it was gone I knew it was the right decision. Gear needs to be living, to be in use. Not in storage. Says me, anyway. -09

My idea is to just have 3-4 pieces of outboard left, which I use during tracking. The mixing will be all ITB from now on, because I found a way how it works for me.
I may get rid of the Névé pre-amps because I can have a very similar color from other gear. It's time to use something that preserves the transient's a little more.
I am not sure which preamp is the bridge between old school sound and a little more clean/modern.

mrholmes . : What you're describing is the Chroma or Chroma+ (rack mount). Not as cloudy as Neve's - especially when stacked. But still firmly in the Neve-ish camp. Not as brash as API's, and not as murky as a lot of the API clones. Plus you have both colors that you can use together, and you can use it on inserts of your 2 buss when mixing if you like.

I was tempted to impulse buy a Markbass bass amp head but prudence got the better of me, so I'm going to wait a few weeks.
Not the most exciting response but it feels good to be able to control these impulses.
Also almost impulse purchased some Waves plugins for $14 each, it was really hard to let that one pass. 2019 was a plugin binge year for me, trying to keep my shoes tied this year.

Decided NOT to worry about the SSL Six and start researching summing boxes and other processors for mixing like the Silver Bullet.

Decided NOT to worry about the SSL Six and start researching summing boxes and other processors for mixing like the Silver Bullet. In addition to the Equalux, ZenPro is also blowing out the Tonelux summing mixer for $799 down from $1500. I don’t remember much about it other than reading some decent reviews in the past. Edit: The TapeOp review of it actually makes it sound pretty intriguing...

I bought a pair of N22's a few years ago. I could never warm to them at all. They were just too anemic. I get that they are designed to be used up close with reduced proximity effect but... er no. No point if they sound like shite. I didn't use them for over a year and was about to sell them when the N8's came out. After doing some research I pulled the N22's apart and removed the perforated tube which covers the ribbon motor assembly that acts as an acoustic high pass filter to reduce proximity effect and possibly also creates a slight presence peak. Anyway after the mod they sounded great. Much richer, bigger and smoother and from my understanding more like an N8. YMMV but I hated them until the mod and now I really like them. Axe Fx 3...lukily I just impulsed bought a pair of AEA n22's so I'm broke and can't also buy the Axe Fx

+1
Thinking (feeling) before buying.
Having fun in the long run is what makes me more happy. It took my ADD brain years to learn not to impulse buy things I don't need.

I did like the acoustic and vocal clips I've heard on AEA's website. But, the n8's are actually what I've wanted for a long time, and will probably get them at some point. The pair of n22's were only $1000, too good to pass up in my book. If I don't get along with them I know I'll make my money back selling them. If nothing else It'll be like I rented some cool for nothing other than the time it takes to post and package them

I'm keeping myself from buying the Softube Fader and their channel strip thingy. I have terrible news. I have Console1 (don't have Fader...yet...it'll be a while, though) and it changed my mixing drastically. I'm getting MUCH better results now. I feel like I do better with knobs and simultaneous adjustments than I do with a mouse. Console1 helps me do that. I have the SSL strip it comes with and just got the API strip. I've never used anything API-ish before (other than the Kush Omega A plugin) but it seems to get me where I want to go faster. The SSL is good, too. I just think the API thing fits the way I want to hear stuff...having both isn't a bad thing. The SSL is exactly the right strip for certain things. One caveat: I wouldn't bother with Console1 if I didn't use a DAW that had full Console1 integration. Being able to pan, adjust sends, ride a fader, etc. from the channel strip surface is great and I don't think I'd be happy if I had to jump through the hoops that a DAW without the full integration forces you to jump through.

That AEA RPQ preamp price on Reverb has dropped to $795. ***must be strong, must be strong***

You guys aren't helping. What's the difference between Console1 versions 1 & 2 ? None except a few labels and the country of manufacture. 100% identical functions. I wouldn’t dream of mixing without it.
