The review was nice enough. The review is a good example of why I seldom bother with Tape Op reviews anymore - he manages to be nice, relatively non-committal, doesn't mention anything bad, and didn't piss off the company.
Useless.

Tommy. Serious question. Will you also buy back the Alctron version for twice the price in 10 years or is that only for the Weird Audio branded version? Unrelated, do you sell the Weird Audio badges separately? I don't like anything uncertain or vague in my investment portfolio so I need to get this squared away ASAP k thx. Tommy does not intend to be in busisness in 10 years, hence the offer.

I'm guessing they buy the Alctron and replace the capsule and tube.

If this is indeed just a simple rebranding of a Chinese mic with the price raised a couple hundred bucks, Tape Op really has egg on their face. By the way, if you're keeping score Ragan called this on Page 1.

I'm guessing they buy the Alctron and replace the capsule and tube. Wouldn't that change the readings on the freq response charts they published that are the same as the Alctron?

Oh I agree. I trust what you guys have to say way more than any “media” reviews. But, it didn’t take but a few minutes to read it.

This is a classic bad internet joke of a thread where the joker doesn't even know that folks are laughing.....
That said, the Alctron mic could actually be decent. Stranger things have happened. I put up their ACM 1200 branded mic (Apex 460 / Avantone variant) with the stock tube against a k_l_A_u_s modded U47 and a classic stock M49 and a MJ modded 460 - male and female vox. The stocker held it's own quite well.
k_l_A_u_s was pissed that the 1200 was getting more votes in the poll, and truth be told said the mic had been modded after he had seen it last - ***and that may be true, but it was one of the FAVORITES at a Hollywood rental company***. Often requested by big name artists.
So there ya go..... Might actually be a decent mic.

Hey - sometimes the underdog has no problems beating out the big dogs in the race on a certain vocalist or instrument. I think we’ve all come across that phenomenon. But for the most part, the tried and trusted known variant will win the race. ::most of the time::

In this particular shootout..... And again to be clear, the 47 had k_l_A_u_s's sticker on it when I used it, but he later requested its removal from the rental company after it ended up getting beat by inexpensive mics in the polls. Pissed might be too strong a descriptor of his complaints, but that said, I liked the 47, and so did my client. And so did LOTS of people who requested it specifically from the rental company. Ya never know when a $110 mic will show up and kick some ***. That thread was a TON of fun and a pretty wild ride. A lot of people didn't like the results, and a lot of people loved it and were out buying and modding mics afterwards. Attachments:

I don’t have any problem with the idea of a cheaper microphone sounding good (in fact I had a JJ Audio modified Apex 460 for awhile), but I don’t appreciate the misrepresentation of a product.

It's really pretty simple (and has been stated in-part previously). Tommy sends a demo of his Weird 47 Mod 1 to Vincent and his 67-ish Little Red Monster to Martin for their review. Both of those gentlemen have the expertise with those respective mic flavors to do a thorough, objective, and fair evaluation using their extensive experience with similar voiced mics and their current mic locker. Not to mention their experience conducting video reviews and shootouts. Everyone hears the actual mics on trusted voices we know, and the speculation is resolved. Let the chips fall where they may.

You know, he could do exactly that. But it's kind of beyond the scope of what most manufacturers actually do. So I wouldn't hold it against him if he didn't. If he's actually selling them, the reviews will show up in an organic fashion.

but I don’t appreciate the misrepresentation of a product. Agreed. The whole Telefunken thing really soured me on their mics, and I know for a fact they make some great mics. But still.... OEM-ing products has been going on for years. Nothing wrong with that. What makes it even better is the offering company putting in their own personalized spin on an already great product - not trying to obscure the realities.

OTOH, this was at a rental company - what was the difference in rental rates?

If he's actually selling them, the reviews will show up in an organic fashion. I completely understand and respect what you're saying. The difference I have seen is other manufacturers simply show up on forums such as this and make a straightforward, factual, and professional announcement about their product(s) with a focus on the technical aspects. They respect the subscribers and don't badger the group they are seeking to win over, disparage other well-respected manufacturers, or imply they know more than the experts on those forums. I understand as a supplier he's excited about his product and would like the folks on this forum to be so as well. For me it's just at the point where it's time for him to do what he himself says in his own post on the very first page of this thread: "Let's do a shootout oh you many mouths... put your mic where your tiny mouth is". It's pretty evident that just continuing the discussion in the same vein as he has done will not help his cause.

One simple explanation could be he’s giving them suggestions in China, they are his “team” and he’s dropping knowledge so they improve the product to his specs. And then, like every company who tries this discovers: they just turn around and sell the same product undercutting your ability to market it. It’s possible. Or it could be like someone else I knew.. telling people Joyo pedals were his handmade boutique pedals he designs himself, and his team builds for him, turns around and sells them for boutique prices. And the least likely is he’s building the capsules himself and swapping in tubes at his place. But hopefully that’s what is happening and he can show pics to prove it.

If he's swapping in his own tubes then why is he still using crappy 12AX7 guitar amp tubes? Too much gain, too much noise. There are SO many better tubes in the world, many nearly as cheap as 12AX7s.
Hell, there are lots of tubes that even have the exact same pinout!
I'm betting that they're unaltered Chinese mics with a different badge and ugly red paint.

Repeat after me “ we will never ever, ever sell a relabeled generic Chinese microphone” 😁 I DON'T GET IT. IF I RELABEL SOMETHING AND SELL IT FOR A HIGHER PRICE I SHOULD COME UP WITH A STORY THAT LUNES UP. SOMETHING LIKE.... WE REPLACE CAPSULES AND TUBES WITH.... THERE'S A REASON WHY THE FAMOUS BRANDS DON'T NEED TO TELL BS MARKETING ....BTW MG IS NOT DOING REAL MARKETING AT ALL. KUDOS TO PEOPLE NOT TELLING ME BS UP FRONT. AND BTW WAS IT A DIFFERENCE WHEN MY UMT 70 WAS BACK FROM MAINTENANCE. HURRA IT WAS AND THE CHINESE CHEAPO WENT BACK INTO STORAGE.... DO I STILL LOVE MY KM184 EVEN IF I SAVE UP FOR AN 84. YES I DO...
