I'd rather boost top end than cut it, but that's just me. I also never thought the KM184 was too bright. I'm good with boosting hi's as well. As for the 184, to me it sounds more "hard" in the upper mids, lower hi's than "bright".

Friends have also found the KM184 very sensitive to RFI which can make it brighter yet.

I have recently acquired a pair of Gefell M295s and a Daking Micpre II. One high end vocal mic and then I cannot blame my suckage on gear. 😂

bluegrassdanGood GOD that sounds beautiful. That's honestly one of the best steel guitar sounds I've ever heard. I didn't know I needed a new preamp before this video. Thanks for the heads up.

I am, of course, completely biased. But Josephson C715 and MP-2NV for vocals, KM-84 and MP-2MH.

AT2020 and a focusrite Sapphire no wait that just one a bunch of fixed awards😁
Now an M49 with original M7 into a Hardy would probably not suck on just about anything.

But Chuck Norris would pick the SM7, for sure! Chris Why?... Because if you throw a SM7, into a Pool... (Just like Chuck Norris) The SM7 doesn't get wet. The Pool gets "SM-7nd"! Chris

Chuck Norris stares at a SM7. It's a hit in Texas. But Chuck Norris would pick the SM7, for sure! Chris

A bit of a dead thread revival but it's a fun thought experiment to feel what's essential in the stable.
I was wondering if anyone would change their original picks from a few years ago. It seems many mics have been bought since, and many great ones have been released since the thread started.
I would go m49 into a ca70.

For the stuff I usually record I'm a sucker for the U47 sound, vocals, acoustics in omni, electrics, overheads, I love it on pretty much anything. And I would definitely also pair it with a Coil preamp but I'll go with the 286, I love the CA70 on most everything but U47-286 works really well.
If I had to be super versatile and record a lot of different music I would probably go with a vintage U87 along with a Martech. I feel I could cover a lot of bases.

Been using a pair of m269s a lot lately. They sound great on a variety of voices and can do acoustic guitar too…
