If you could only pick one mic and one pre what would it be?
Let’s relax things a little and allow a mic and pre for vocals and a mic and pre for acoustic instrument as well.
My choice...
VOCAL MIC: Neumann U77
VOCAL PRE: Seventh Circle Audio J99 (Jensen Twin Servo Clone using Lundahl Transformers)
ACOUSTIC MIC: KM84
ACOUSTIC PRE: Seventh Circle Audio J99
None of the above sounds ‘wrong’ on anything and with a little tweaking can get me the results I’m satisfied with. Obviously a bigger selection of mics and pres would allow closer fine tuning right off the bat depending on the source but as I’m downsizing since closing the studio I’m looking at a small setup that won’t cause me to lose any sleep.

Vocal mic is voice dependant. My voice.? SM7. Vocal pre? Daking. Might not be the best for whatever voice/ mic combo, but it just tends to work.
on acoustic I’ll go with Daking again and I’ve moved to an sdc, so let’s say Km84.
Cheers, Geoff

Ok, I’m a hobbyist, but doing this since 84.
So Ive tried a lot of stuff over that period. The Daking isn’t that vibey, thick etc. But it’s not entirely neutral, to my ears. But, if I were to put it in a box, neutral with just a bit of something is where I’d put it. I mean, I like my Syteks, which are fast and clean. I play Telecasters. So I guess I like some snap over beef. Mostly.
so, the Daking seem to just work. But I’ve never piloted an SSL or NEVE or API or quad 8 or even a DDA or Neotek or Harrison or whatever. A day or two in real studios when friends were tracking. But my own crap? Mostly a mix of prosumer, but definitely some good stuff included. And the Daking belongs in there. So, grains of salt with my opinions.
That being said. Love the Daking pre. Really love the Fet comp. But we’re talking about près here and the Daking is worth a listen, that can work in almost any application. Pretty neutral, in a good way with maybe a bit of weight. I dunno how to describe it. But for me that likes the fast clean Sytek sound, the Daking works on all the same stuff and more.
I’ve never worked on an A range either, so can’t tell you how close it gets. But it sounds good. I promise!
If you like the Neve or API thing, there are lots of options. Go for one of those. The Daking is a bit different. Not in a bad way.
Cheers, Geoff

It has to be a 44 ribbon into a Silver Bullet, in a great sounding room. Almost sounds like Colonel Mustard, with a candlestick, in the Library. Chris

Samar MF-65 and RCA 87-A are the only pairing I can safely say I've used on most sources for a couple of different releases, and have used on pretty much every source at one time or another. You could argue for different choices on any of them, but none other would be so 'swiss army knife', and obviously I like that sort of tube color profile.

Pair of m269s. Any preamp with an EQ. I really am just not picky with a tube mic. If solid state, id want a tube preamp. I guess pressed....Millenia Origin would be a catch all. I actually think those old tube mics sound better NOT matched to a 1970s bandwidth limiting transformer preamp. Its more important to me to be able to air up or pull some honk or whatever from a given source than the “color” of a preamp to record “anything”.

On the relatively cheaper end for home recording...
SM7>Little Labs LMNOpre. Is also a winner on my voice.
Looks like a used LMNO Pre is around $900 now. Quite a bargain.
Super clean. Seems like an excellent complement, to the Silver Bullet. Chris
