Flea 47 into Weight Tank V72 is my go to for vocals.

Little Labs LMNOpre. Is also a winner on my voice. Looks like a used LMNO Pre is around $900 now. Quite a bargain. Never tried one. What does it compare to?

U47 - Hardy M1 for vocals KM84 - Hardy M1 for instruments Yep, I like the Hardy M1. Clean but not sterile. Just a bit of extra beef. I am interested in picking up a Daking too.

Even more than a Millennium or Grace IMHO.I wish John L. had found a way to market these better, they deserved better attention. Now a High End sleeper. Chris

The Hardy M1 is a ‘Single Servo’ (single opamp) version of the Hardy M2 which itself is the Jensen Twin Servo design using John Hardy’s 990 op amps. The Seventh Circle Audio J99 is a ‘Twin Servo’ but uses a Lundahl input transformer and a Cinemag high nickel output transformer with a very similar spec to the Jensen o/p transformer used in the Hardy. As per the Hardy, clean but not sterile with a little heft. I would place it sonically in between a Millienia and a Neve whereas a Millenia is detailed but can be a little sterile while the Neve has some weight but can be a little unrefined but together just right.

My limited understanding, is that the Daking sound was originally based on... The Trident A Range. BTW here in the cheap seats, I'm very curious about the Soyuz Launcher. Might liven up my Onyx and SP VTB-1 pre's. Potential early 2020 impulse buy. Chris

I thought about it, and I tried, but i can't really narrow it down. On the SDC front, Im pretty sure I could call it an 84/86 with the nod going to the 86, but on the other fronts....eh....too hard. My brain hurts.

My brain hurts. Give us your top three brain hurting ideas! Not sure I could do 3 on the LDC front.... On the Mic Pre front it would be (in no particular order...) Silver Bullet (chosen over Chroma because of the flexibility of switching and/or cascading API/Neve internally and because it's stereo), Coil CA70 (gotta have this one for electric guitars and kick - it's like having a guitar amp for a mic pre. LOL), Weight Tank WT 72's, and Locomotive 286a's. I've kinda been on a tube pre kick. Sorry, that's 4. You'll just have to deal with it.... heh heh

My goto studio setup starting in 1980 is my Wally Heider (battery Compartment ) Neumann U87 into an original Neve 1073 > Orginal Urei LA-3A I'll still use this setup today. Another is my Neumann U47 > Tele V72 They were made for each other. The Neuman M49s sound great though The Boulder Deane Jensen twin servo preamps. The clean pre allows the uncolored true tube sound of the mics.

I think that by now we have blown the - 1 mic, 1 pre - thing completely out of the water..........

A quick question: Why the KM184? I've never used (or heard in a comparative sense that seemed definitive) a KM84 or a 184. A lot has been said of the 84 - there might even be a thread around here somewhere... - but what do you like about the 184 that it's your one instrument mic in this hypothetical?

If I had to downsize my system for some reason and keep two setups around, one for vocals and one for instruments my choices would be: FleA 49 into Dan Alexander Dual Channel Class A (or Neumann M49 into Neve 1073 if I could choose true vintage gear) & Neumann U87 into Demeter VTMP 2C Between both of those set ups I could record almost anything. I’d love to have picked an SDC for one of these, but I’m still at the beginning of my SDC journey and don’t have enough experience to choose one over my U87, which kills on acoustic IMHO and from my experience.

I’m curious about that Demeter! The U87 is a better match for my voice than the KM86. But haven’t found the perfect preamp for it yet.

For vocals, I’d pick a Telefunken U47 and a Mercury M72. Or what I usually love to gloat over, an M149 and a Wunder PEQ. For instruments, a U87 + 1073 or maybe a 4038 + AEA TRP.

I sort of did this on my latest record. Everything was recorded with a vintage u87 into a Useful Arts sfp30. Even di was the little solid state Fearn into the Useful Arts. The only exception was vocals which was an sm7 into the same pre.
Here’s an example....

The Demeter is a really nice tube preamp that I love for taming brighter mics. It’s killer on the U87ai and the Blue Kiwi.

I've just gotten used to using them for acoustic stuff, and I like a brighter acoustic sound. They have that KM sound, but a little brighter, cheaper, and are available. It's a ton easier to just drop the top end a little if you want less brightness than trying to boost it. I like putting them right up on the instrument, so the brightness and the proximity effect make it more "lively" sounding without needing a lot of EQ.

Of course, your shit sounds way better than mine but that's a thing I can say about most of the cats around here! I've felt compelled for quite a while to err on the side of getting too much on the top end when I'm capturing instruments like acoustic guitar, piano, or drums/percussion because I can cut in a way cleaner-sounding way than I can boost. Thanks for the bit-o-thought!

I'd rather boost top end than cut it, but that's just me. I also never thought the KM184 was too bright. To me it sounded just about right on everything, love that mic, need another one.

If you could only pick one mic and one pre what would it be? Let’s relax things a little and allow a mic and pre for vocals and a mic and pre for acoustic instrument as well.
MIC PREs:
RME Quad Mic
Mics:
UMT 70 s + KM 184
