DBX 266xl It has detented knobs. I always thought it had a even pleasant sound without any harsh highs. And they're super cheap.
AKG 414buls - Love that thick dark sound. On a bright female singer. On a screaming amp. Oh yeah!!
Cascade Fatheads - love them. Again, thick and dark. KSM series like everyone else said. Kind of in the 1st 1-10% in the thick dark camp. Not bright or strident at all.

The EMMA Electronic Stinkbug pedal. It really is the "so much better than a tube screamer" bluesy, amp-like overdive. I use it with a strat and a Les Paul and now can't imagine how I ever played without it.

The Cascade X-15 stereo ribbon. Every time I put it up I am mildly impressed all over again. Not too muddy or dark. Nice!

Yeah.. you're right, it's not a sweetness like a 67's high end saturation. It is more of a "wooly darkeness". But on a loud and bright source (I record a lot of Tele's and Strats) it can be just the ticket. And yeah, this wooly darkeness thing can be pretty 'meh' on non bright / more balanced sounds.
You are forgiven,
go in peace. And slay.

Funny that you mention the 3630. I heard this compressor on acoustic guitars, and I was impressed how good this unit goes with acoustics.
Bought one today for 50 bucks and did some toying around.
For some music it's also a great two bus compressors.
What I do not like with the most VCA based compressors they add an aggressive feeling to the sound, this was one of the reasons why I sold my SSL Gyraf 4000. The 3630 is no exception it adds some kind of pushing things forward...

I totally agree. There are some very strong AE's, like Tony Visconti, who use them. But... I have still have fun, making fun of them ala Neuman TLM 103! Chris

Chris You can't say that the 3630 sounds bad you can say that it sounds very special, and works well in a narrow spot. The knobs act surgically precise. I was impressed by the fact that they used quality potentiometes, in stero mode no left right difference. Only downside is it tends to pump the low end when it works harder. But who said you only can use it for sub low sources? Same is true for some cheap microphones if I know how they react I can find the right spot. Cheap gear should not stop me from beeing creative....

Also, pop the top off yours and check the chips. You could easily upgrade it quite easily: www.diyrecordingequipment.com/pages/3630-manualPeterson used to sell a full kit of parts for the upgrade but doesn't appear to be on his site anymore. Might have some left to ask him or you can just source the parts in the BOM listed in the manual yourself.

I actually have the "spinoff", AKA the Nanocompressor. Handy for the 'ol 16/44.1 type recordings. In moderation IMHO, fine for nice home recording style demo recordings. Chris

I hate the 3630 but one of my mentors used them all of the time. TNC ACMP with Carnhills. I like them. Vintage Designs. M81. Great preamp. Use it as much as my Great River. Behringer B2 Modded Oktavas mk-012 both modded and not, they are good mics especially on acoustic instruments. WA76 (and I own 3 other 76 type comps) Wa12. Once again I own 3 other API type comps and use the wa12 just as much.

I just can say I use it just since two weeks and I have found many creative spots for it. For me more than decently underrated special because it can stay clean as water on non kick drum sources.

Do you guys regard the Focusrite ISA One, as somewhat underated? Thanks, Chris Quite the contrary. Even describing it as average is over-rating the pale imitation of an actual ƒ preamp. Damn. Reviving this thread. I was looking at the focusrite ISA two to add to my collection for acoustic, and piano recording. Does it really suck? What else should I look to? I already have the usual suspects for "vibe" (neve, api, chandler).

I believe there are a bunch of brands out there that I would consider underrated. Maybe not in the way that they would be considered lesser, often vice versa, them who use them really appreciate them, but which have been overseen by more established brands many times. Personally I’ve come across some of these which I think easily really under priced for what they are. Audio Technica, IGS, WES, Lauten are just a few that has turned my head around big time.
Brands like Klark, Warm, GAP I don't consider underrated. They are well known and established and have more units out there Id guess than any other brand. They are probably good for what they are and within their price range, but I don’t think they are worth a dime more than the few hundred they go for. I would even go as far as calling them overrated when scrolling forums and reading about them.

This is probably one of the most underrated Focusrite units ever made. The Mark 1 was made in the UK, unlike later crap sourced out to the far east

Piano and acoustic recordings? I love the Hardy M1 for those. A Daking is also good on those sources and even better on drums and percussion. But I digress. I too had looked at the ISA before getting the Daking. I had read some reports of overheating in the ISA which caused problems, so in the end I went with the Daking. BTW, if you use ribbon mics a lot, the Daking is fantastic on mine. Plenty of clean gain.
