What do you use the 107 for? Mine was a distortion box. Any mods?

As I tried to convince you guys on the stereo compressor thread The SPL Dynamaxx kills every SSL original or clone stereo compressor on the mix bus and it's great on drums to boot. All the Gyraf stuff but I'm biased. Emma Electronic Stinkbug overdrive pedal. T.C. Electronic 1140 or 2240 eq's.

The stock Aphex 107, is well regarded by Craig Anderton, for example. It's known for smoothing out "harsh digital" (way back in Prosumer ADAT A/D days). I sold mine, but if I had a real Project Studio, I never would have. IIRC there were some "parts mods.
Another excellent pre, at my level, is the Studio Projects VTB-1.
It's several notches, above the Mackie Onyx pre's, when used for dynamic microphones. Good/cheap $$ pre even for a 44 ribbon! I know that because of Harvey Gerst's testing of that. Chris

Demeter VTMP for adding some tube saturation to brighter FET mics and budget tube mics. With a BLUE Kiwi it’s gold. Pretty damn good with a U87ai as well. Audio Technical AT3525. A cheap MDC that has ended up on more of my recordings than I can count. Johnkenn , the KSM44 was my first professional microphone; cello, violin, viola, guitars, male and female vocalist, room mic, you name it I recorded it with the KSM44. I loved it as the side mic in mid side with my Peluso 2247SE on choir and small ensemble. I even recorded all my vocals for Christopher Lee’s Charlemagne Albums with it. It killed me to sell it.

Shure SM81. Really. Especially the omni capsule (if you can find one). For classical music Larry Rock once described it as "the second best mike for everything." Also a great platform for mods.

Sebatron stuff. Can be had at great prices second hand, and it’s really high class stuff. I’ve got the 4 channel tube pre and the SMAC tube optical dual mono/stereo compressor.

KSM 44s are great utility mics, love them on toms. Or put another way, "Toms! A great instrument for mics that won't work on anything else!"

How do you compare one, to a U89 then? Thanks, Chris The 170R has better technical specs, when compared, It has higher headroom before distortion, lower self noise too..overall less character of sound, IMHO and very versatile for different things. The u89 has always been “a more versatile” U87 to me,
