Audio Technical AT3525. A cheap MDC that has ended up on more of my recordings than I can count. +1000. I'm still amazed these were discontinued. They sounded absolutely phenomenal for the price. I need to grab one off Reverb... It’s all about placement with that mic. Want something bigger sounding, put it close. Want something that cuts better, just pull it back. I cut my first demo with it on my vocals.

To add to the sE list the X1D sounds great for a front kick drum mic. I think they were on sale for $79 recently. Shockingly good. Also I think the AKG C460B is a bargain, I see them around $200 pretty often. I'm using the X1D on floor tom currently.

I need to grab one off Reverb... George Massenburg had an old recording forum, where someone asked him if he'd pay the premium for vintage mics. He said he'd buy AT mics and spend the money on good compressors. I don't know if he was a paid endorser for AT or not though.

SM58's. I use it often as a guitar amp mic instead of the 57. It picks up just a pinch more air from the room, which I like. Mexican Strats. I once had a student with deep pockets. I tested at least 20 or more Strats. I picked two, not knowing their cost. One was $1800, one was $349. We took the less expensive one because they were equal in playability and sound quality.
Honorable mention: Sony MDR-7506 headphones. They're quite bright, but I compared them to every under $200 pair of cans available when I bought them four years ago. They were way better, and they still work fine.

There's an engineer/mixer I've known a long time who's won a Grammy or two through the years that also felt similar, having access to and using the higher end mic's he also said the AT4050 was a good mic and used it on a number of things.

I knew almost nothing about engineering at the time, but I somehow managed to get vocal recordings that still sound great to me. I'd rather use that than a myriad of other mics I've tried over the years, even a few mid-tier & high end ones (U87ai, TLM 102). Honorable mention: Sony MDR-7506 headphones. They're quite bright, but I compared them to every under $200 pair of cans available when I bought them four years ago. They were way better, and they still work fine. Another vote for these. They are indeed very bright, but they have an insanely tight phase response that makes them an invaluable tool for checking mixes. Most other headphones in the same price range sound unfocused and weird to me.

Thermionic Culture Pullet (passive EQ) Thanks for this tip. I’ve been looking for something like this.

Thermionic Culture Pullet (passive EQ) Thanks for this tip. I’ve been looking for something like this. I love it, sounds great, needs around 30-40dB make gain after (I use a TG2). Mid boost is great in the vocal range, mid cut is great for getting rid of muddy or warming things up with a cut around 4k, high shelf is great, although I modded mine for 3dB gain instead of 6dB (simple resistor change per channel).

FWIW Sony MDR-V6 headphones are mellower in tone, compared to their fraternal twin-almost identical 7506's. They have more soldering inside vs. the 7506, which makes them less bright. Jim Williams' posts on these 15+ years ago, influenced me to pick up a pair around then- they're still working perfectly BTW.
My "3525" is the AKG (Black) P120. IMHO for up to Podcasts/MP3's/YouTube Channel, another very nice sounding "flatish" MDC. (but I still want a premium 47 or 67 style LDC someday!) Chris

They were way better, and they still work fine. Sadly my Sony 7506 headphones broke beyond repair. They're not my favorite personally, but I need to pick up another pair because they're very loud and very clear, and vocalists always want to be louder. Honestly. ALWAYS.

I like my AT M50x's better than my Sony 7506s now. Not sure why. The Sony's are just too bright to me.

Even though the Sony MDR-V6's are mellower, I still listen to them at only to low, and low/medium volume settings.
I'm a big fan of the AKG D240 series. Although I have the rarer/desirable DF model... For everyday listening, I love my other cheapie 240 Studio pair I have too. Chris

Massdrop HD6XX I guess these are sleeper headphones, outrageously good, same as HD650 for less money.
My AKG are the K702 and I love them, also not expensive, especially second hand.

Symetrix Comps Shure KSM series Deltalab delays A big +1 on the Shure KSM series. The 32 and the 141 are faves in that line and get used a-plenty around here. -09

Not a budget piece obviously but... IMHO the Bock Soundelux U99, is every bit "as great", as the Neumann U67 reissue.
In budget land, the Aphex 107 is a very nice smooth pre. Also the Studio Projects VTB-1, when you leave the tube blend off.

An old M260 can be really cool on certain things!
(Mentioned earlier) DIYRE Pultec EQs are great. I recommend customizing them too with your transformer and op-amp of choice.

Koss Pro4AA. But will they withstand the test of time? They have only been in production since 1970.

Man. I have a pair of those kicking around somewhere. Came across them in a thrift shop. I don't recall them sounding that great but they are beefy.

How do you compare one, to a U89 then? Thanks, Chris The 170R has better technical specs, when compared, It has higher headroom before distortion, lower self noise too..overall less character of sound, IMHO and very versatile for different things. The u89 has always been “a more versatile” U87 to me, Technical specs, sure. I've seen a lot of things with great technical specs that I didn't like much.
How does it sound?
