Aphex 107, 651, 661 and 320 Compellor Symmetrix SX206 and 525 Neumann U89s and TLM170s. (and for the caller who asked, they are very similar but the U89 is more weighty) TLM102 also. No, it's not really a vocal mic but killer on cymbals and perc.

EV RE55 - dynamic mics are no good for distant micing and other myths dispelled by the magic wand
MXL Revelation - find me a pair of something else short of actual U67s that'll make me want to take them down over a drum kit or piano, now do it for $700 a pair
Audient ASP2802 - outboard preamps are nice, but not really necessary. Stand-alone monitor controllers are nice, but not really necessary. Control surfaces are nice, but not really necessary. Outboard summing units are nice, but if I could just automate a channel after inserting an analog comp... sum > parts.

Klark-Teknik KT-2A. Does not cost more than one uad plug. Bought two pieces and put in Kenettek T4B optical cell in them. Delivers top notch for hardly any money

Probably half my gear was once "under-rated". Many have become "over-rated" with time, so I'll skip those. Some of the classic STILL under rated pieces that work fantastic : API 550 A-1's - still love these over the much touted alternatives. DBX 510 Sub Harmonic Generators Serpent SA3a's - getting next to impossible to find em now though.... ACMP 73/84's as someone mentioned earlier. Heavyweight sleepers Mr. Focus modules. Killer. LOVE the tilt/focus EQ among the myriad of Colour options.... Yamaha D1500's Yamaha E1010's Studio Technologies AN-2 Stereo Simulator. That 80's Prince sound. Weight Tank Comps and V72's. These things are STILL skating under the radar. Not sure how.... Aphex 661's. Long touted as killer. STILL pretty far under the radar As someone mentioned - KT2a's. Really nice. Like them very much alongside my custom 2a's with the best of the best And then there's the mics..... Neumann TLM170's. Oktava 012's. Still great for a cheaper 84 sound. KM53's. WAAAAAY under the radar, although not inexpensive MJ modded Oktava 219's. Still a working man's bargain 545's. The MJ modded 205 ribbons. Killer! CAD M177's. Poor man's tom condensers. Micro Baby Amps. SUUUUPER Killer Love em. 000 Martins, particularly the 18's. Best sounding recorded guitars. Not inexpensive, but everyone tends to head towards 28's. the Rogue Dobro's - very decent for killer price Seagull merlin's - I call these money guitars. Cause they make me money on the cheap. Those cheap Monoprice tube amps. Pretty nice, and can be modded. That all that comes to mind right now....

It's been a few years since I've given up in buying lots of gear and I just focus on a few pieces that really do make a difference. At least to me.

Speck asc eq really loving that. Have always had one on hand for the last 10 x years. Also i keep coming back to my AT 4060 tube mic. It just works better for me then a U87 on vocals.

I'd have to say my modded MC-012 mics. Dirt cheap and so close to the sound of a KM84 (close miced guitar and mandolin).
hadaja, I need to bring out my AT4060 again. I haven't used it in a couple years but I do remember it having a nice open top end.
When I saw the posts about the Symetrix comps, it made me check the model I've had. Ends up that I have a couple CL-150 comps. I'm not sure I've even plugged them in since 1990. :-) I just tend to not compress on the way in and I stay ITB for mixing.

I'll echo a couple of others...
Klark Teknik KT-2A - great tone and action Midas 522 - 500 series .... cool little compressor, surprisingly useful Presence knob Acustica plugins - don't seem that popular but I'd hate to mix without them Magneto Labs Variohm - I use 600ohm and 2.4kohms a lot to revoice mics. My KM84 and U87 prefer 2.4 to standard CAPI, NEVE etc. 1-1.2k

Right. Who needs that stuff when you've got a decent console?

FWIW I have two MXL's, V69me and V87.
IMHO the V69 is "hit or miss" on a given vocal. Cool for a Zombies/Colin Blunstone kind of vibe.
The V87 is a nice/much quieter microphone. Somewhat U87-ish, whatever that means! More limited (as expected) with processing compared to a real U87.Not near as good either, with an edgy voice. Chris

I'd say the entire Shure KSM series. Yeah absolutely I wish I could have a bunch of them, right now only KSM137, one of my favorite SDC of all time that I have owned. Oktava MK 012 agree on this one too stupidly good for acoustic instruments for the price. Yamaha MLA8 - this is my 'cheap preamp' that I use for 16 channels of drums as needed, definitely under the radar. Tascam UH-7000 - these are cheap now, still sound fabulous Five Fish NK-72DI preamps, with an OA10 style op amp installed, this are beasts BBE Sonic Maximizer - people used to dog these constantly - I have found it to be incredibly useful in even a higher end studio setup - there are tricks to using it though like for example turn the knobs up all the way, and run parallel to your tom tom bus (Ryan Hewitt trick). or just to brighten up a guitar dial in a tiny bit. Lindell PEX-500 I think these are quite good solid state pultec style EQs Topping DX7S - my weird consumer ESS Sabre DAC of choice Midas DM12 and DM16 - I think these are good "cheap" mixers probably going to exceed other "cheap" mixers. I use one for synths currently. I agree about the RE18 and the RE20 - there's your nicer sounding guitar and bass amp mics. 635A as well though everyone mentions these now. PL6 and 660 are a bit of a sleeper in the old EV realm. Apex 205 ribbons, MXL R80 and R40 ribbons, various mods. SE V7 and V7X - these are slowly starting to get some attention. My new "go to" utility mics, and the V7X lives on snare. ok I'll stop now

Was not really a fan of those. The slightly later MKIII and MKIV, OTOH, were the best on the market in their class. Made the Yamaha stuff (of that period and class) look like the poorly designed toys that they were.

sE VR1 ribbons - The business on loud amps. Has beat out some usual suspects for me many times.
Groove Tubes MD1a - Love this thing on vocals. Nice and dark.
Hamptone preamps - I seriously don't understand why these aren't more ubiquitous in studios. Incredible stuff.
EHX 12AY7 preamp - This thing is shockingly good sounding, and it costs less than most boutique guitar pedals.
Sennheiser e602 - I try other mics on bass drum, and come back to this almost 100% of the time.

I'm using my HVTP2 to add some sauce to room mics right now actually. Works great. Same for the JFET, only I'm using that to distort vocals.

To add to the sE list the X1D sounds great for a front kick drum mic. I think they were on sale for $79 recently. Shockingly good.
Also I think the AKG C460B is a bargain, I see them around $200 pretty often.

Audio Technical AT3525. A cheap MDC that has ended up on more of my recordings than I can count. +1000. I'm still amazed these were discontinued. They sounded absolutely phenomenal for the price. I need to grab one off Reverb...
