Siesta Key is a great, more low key spot and if you’re flying Tampa is usually a cheap flight.
Kiawah Island in South Carolina is also a great beach
I’m from Cincinnati and Hilton Head is where everyone goes for vacation (closest beach) and can be fun and if you rent a car you can go to Savannah, GA which is a fun town.

Traded a snare for a Urei LA22. Pretty flexible piece! Like a BSS DPR-402 on steroids

I wish I was closer to that auction! Had my eyes on quiet a few things but there was no way I could get up there on pick up day. Interested to hear the differences

I really like my 1178 on guitar, drums, and vocals.
I wish Hairball or someone else made a DIY Revision G 1176. It be cost effective built (no input transformer)

Small and portable is good, but flimsy wires that might get disconnected are not! Using it to multitrack concerts from front of house Right you are. The only thing sucky is the optical, which you are unlikely to be using in that situation. The rest of it is as solid as a dock can be, to the extent that any dock can be "solid". The bigger issue is that USB-C / Thunderbolt of any stripe is not exactly as reliable as a BNC connector. I wish ALL computer connections were bayonet mounts. Then there was the annoying 50-pin or 25-pin SCSI, but what a solid connector in comparison. Thanks! I think I’ll snag the OWC.

That I understand. I mean, I just did a record in Ocean Way here in Nashville and was told not to use the console... I meant that if I were trying to run a business and attract outside engineers I could see how having a rack of Neve's and some old Urei stuff is appealing. For me, running a pretty much private (only two engineers) recording studio that's not much of a concern. But I'd still like a pair of LA-3A's for myself. And, resale value is important. Having things that maintain or gain value is an important factor for me when buying microphones or outboard. And there are still some vintage values to be had out there if you are patient. Acoustics aside, isn't the console there a big part of the draw? One would think! I usually don't bring my own preamps to a session but since I was told not to trust any of the 96 channels on that giant Neve, I did. It was the B room, which I don't think is as much a commercial room as the A room these days. Pretty good sounding studio though, nice and try which was good for what I was doing.

I thought that for a time, but now having run my own spot for about fifteen years, and having enjoyed a pretty ridiculous gear selection with lots of 'name brands', I don't think it's the case. Freelancers coming through care a little, but frankly, the more experienced they are, the less they seem to give a damn. Honestly, the more esoteric / boutique stuff usually gets more attention from the most jaded guys / gals that come through. Occasionally a band will have a recording enthusiast that recognizes a faceplate from one of their favorite plugins, and they'll get a kick outta that, but ultimately, it's the results that count. Working on booking a mix room for October and places with modern boutique stuff in perfect working order are topping the list over vintage esoterica. That I understand. Definitely feel like I missed my chance at a pair of LA3A’s at a somewhat reasonable price. That’s really the only thing I’m like “damn, shoulda coulda woulda” about. There is definitely an aspect of if you are going to have a commercial facility you want to have the real thing…but not at the prices stuff goes for now!
I also know that in some situations people have to spend money on gear if their business received a forgivable loan. Definitely have a few musicians friends who bought expensive pieces for that reason.

Just barfed out money on a new 13.3” MacBook Pro for a tour next month that was finally confirmed. Hoping the M1 computers are solid with Pro Tools. Anyone one have suggestions for a Thunderbolt dock? Is OWC the way to go? I would call the OWC the "least objectionable". I own two, and the optical outs are a little fussy and require jiggling now and then. Not a tight fit. The CalDigit TS3 is also pretty good. Small and portable is good, but flimsy wires that might get disconnected are not! Using it to multitrack concerts from front of house

Nice! The Barber Direct Drive is my Marshally sound and have had it for 21 years - great pedal. Love these into my Princeton Reverb (1980, Deluxe OT, Kendrick Black Frame), my Tremolux, or the Dr. Z MAZ 18. Love the Direct Drive. That's one of those pedals I've owned several times, sold to try other things, and keep coming back to it.

Snagged a Hairball Rev D for less than the cost of an unbuilt kit. And ordered about 600 capacitors to recap my ADR Scamp Rack modules.

What Lewitt would you recommend for something like toms? Multi-pattern with pads. I have a pair of Jim Williams modified ones that I love but I worry they might get bashed one day

I know plug-ins aren't that exciting to most people but one of my "free with purchase" choices awhile back from Waves was the BSS DPR-402. Wow, this thing is pretty awesome. I've never had much luck with SSL plug in expanders, but the BSS works great on kick and snare, and using the HF or LF Emphasis compressor I can compress snares that are poking out in the overheads without effecting the cymbals (HF emphasis) and on floor tom rides get rid of some snare hits without effecting the floor tom tone too much (LF emphasis). Pretty fun for a rock project I'm working on. Cleans up a lot of bleed and brings everything forward and adds a lot of punch.

Lately I’ve had the best luck with starting with my Spectra V610’s and Smart C1 in dual mono the mix buss (usually 4:1 with 3ms or 10ms attack time and auto release) and building my mix with those in from the top. I usually rough in my levels and panning and then start doing some EQ to address some issues (resonant bass frequencies *especially with uprights*) and try to get each instrument sounding as good as it can on its own…working with acoustic instruments I’m mostly trying to get each note on a bass even without having to compress it much and try to make each string of the instrument sound balanced. And then I’ll add some compression if needed, ride the fills and solo, and ride the vocal / vocals. I have a VCA that have every audio track on it so if I’m pushing it too hard into the mix buss chain I can bring everything down (or up if I want to hit it harder).
I also have a pair of AML ezp1a that I’ve level matched with a little 8K boost and a 100hz boost that I’ll try after I’ve got a mix I think is happening and those either make it sound better or too bright or too boomy. But their polish tends to help a lot. I’m sort of going back and forth with following that with an Overstayer MAS. Not sure if I’ve found the magic settings on that yet

Snagged an ADR Scamp S01 compressor off eBay. Now if my buddy would just send me that rack I traded him a bass for that I mailed to him 6 months ago…

Buddy was selling his Distressor at a fair price and I traded my second one off for a guitar several months back. Happy to have a pair again, although financially not ideal haha.

I'm fortunate enough to have an "artist deal" with Isotope and they sent me RX8 to try and fix a few issues I'm facing with a record and I swear, some of what it can do feels like cheating. Music Rebalance is a game changer when it comes to reducing vocal bleed into an instrument mic, or pulling the vocal above instrument bleed. I also had a few overloads/distortions because of a bad channel in a converter and I've been able to fix those with little effect to the source. Definitely making this record a lot easier to mix.

For sale I have an Avid HD Native Thunderbolt interface. Sell for $999 new. $600. Just like buying it new this does not come with any software or cables. Uses Thunderbolt 2 to connect to your computer and receive power. Great unit, used in my home studio for a few years, but switching up my rig and no longer need it.
