So... out of the larger transformer CAPI's should I go for a pair of VP25's or VP312's to go with my 4x VP28's? Good question. Once I figure out what affect the the gar1731/gar2520 and the litz wire have on the circuit, I'll likely be grabbing a pair of VP28's and a pair of VP312DI's.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but here's what I've gathered on the general sound of the CAPI pres:
VP312 - Open sound, with big lows and highs VP25 - More midrange, same output xformer as 312 VP26 - Same circuit as VP25, but with smaller output xformer, more midrange VP28 - Same circuit as VP26, but with output fader from Missing Link
My questions are:
1. How does the Litz wire xformer affect the tonality?
2. How do the different opamps (gar2520 and gar1731, specifically) affect the tonality or attack?

I've had a difficult time making a CAPI choice as well. I'm looking for 8 channels for rhythm section duties, but I'm not sure what the preamp/opamp/transformer combinations with deliver.

Wow.
I wish these were a kit, but I'd grab a pair!

Thank you for this comparison.
I've been wondering about the sonic differences between all of the CAPI pres for awhile now. This gives a nice window into the line.

Which version of the 550A are you referring to? Vintage. Edited original post. Cheers!

First thoughts: The vintage 550A was my favorite, with the BT50 TDK sounding the closest to my ears. Something very pleasant in the lows and buttery highs. I like the top end on the LC25 mono kit as well.
I'd certainly jump at a pair of BT50 TDKs! Well done and thank you for such an in-depth comparison.
