The only kit component is the psu regulator from John Broskie. Everthing else was sourced, down to the paper-in-oil caps from Russia.

Hey guys. I just finished this point-to-point two-channel tube mic preamp. Video with photos included. Let me know what you think
...Really. Let me know if there are any tweaks you think I should make tonally.

Ok thanks! The truth is that the extra cost for case, front panel, knobs, shipping etc is...expensive.the final price is almost the same as buying the 500 series aml 1073 ez That is correct.

Meh. It ain't no U87, IMHO. And the compression doesn't sound like my La2a.
(Obviously, that's just listening off the cuff with no AB comparison.)

I can mix an album with the following:
Fab Filter Pro-Q Fab Filter Pro-C Fab Filter Pro-L Transient Designer Softube Channel Strip Massey CT5 Altiverb Some soft of basic Mid Side gain plugin
But I can't do without good mics, preamps, and room space and placement. A top outboard compressor is a must have for vocals IMHO.

Shure KSM32 is a neutral sounding mic that works great on acoustic instruments. Wouldn't be my first pick for vocals, but it's a great mic for capturing sounds naturally.

The 84 seems a bit punchier and perhaps better note separation whereas the Soyuz is a bit softer in the transients. But it's VERY subtle to me. Could see the Soyuz being far more useful in the studio than KM184, which accentuates pick noise like crazy. Sounds like the top end is smoother than Peluso P28s as well.
I dig it. AND I want some KM84s!

I'm a KM84 fan too, but sitting here using them and the Soyuz, I am not disappointed a bit. There's more in common between the two than not.

Man I just listened to gold rush on my I phone and the Soyuz was definitely nice , BUT the km84 just had a (depth?) warmth hell I don't know but I'm now looking for one Ditto. The KM84 killed it. The Soyuz is nice, and I could see using one in an ensemble based production, but for a solo instrument like the above, the KM84 has more depth, body, mojo - no doubt for me..... And that's listening on my laptop. If I could download the files (link wouldn't let me) I'd listen to them in the studio where I could easily (and more quickly) switch back and forth.... Doubt it would change my mind though. I'm a KM84 lover though.... The Soyuz has some seriously big shoes to try and fill.... Better still are KM86's for me, but 84's are a staple here. I'm sitting here in front of Adam monitors in my treated room and really expected to hear a bigger difference between the two. Of course, that's why I'm posting, to get everyone's opinions.

After so much interest in the previous thread, here is a shootout between a pair of KM84s and the new Soyuz Su-011. Very interested to hear everyone's thoughts. This was quite a surprising shootout with results that I did not quite expect. "Danny Boy" Spaced pair stereo, L mic at neck joint, R mic over shoulder pointed near bridge Mics > AML ez1073 > Apogee conversion > Pro Tools These are two separate performances with the mics in identical positions. Danny Boy, Soyuz Su-001 Danny Boy, Neumann KM84"Gold Rush" Mono mics with capsules phase aligned nearly touching, about 12"-14" in front of neck joint. Mics > Apogee preamps/convertors (to minimize variation) > Pro Tools These are of the same performance. Gold Rush, Soyuz Su-001Gold Rush, Neumann KM84
All files are level matched. Recorded at 24/88.2. Bounced to mp3 at 320 kbps (let me know if you want links to the 24 bit version) Let me know what you all think. Thanks in advance!

I shall return with files in a few moments.

There are already two xlr inputs, one for mic and one for line. Only one output though.

I enjoyed both vids and I think the second vid is very good and reveals the guitar more. The Mics sound very nice and definitely has the beautiful hi end people expect from this style of mic... And they are tube based Still would invest in km84's over these OT: Does Aml not have a full kit to purchase like other DIY offerings like Munson and Fletcher and Hairball? I thought AML had cases; at $850 a channel it's still great price IMO even with having to build the kit... Line level and eq plus the pre..Does your AML have separate mic and line input transformers and separate line and mic I/O for permanent patching? Are the transformers Carnhill, and can you get different transformers or is the pcb fitted for the carnhill? ( if that's even how it's configured/ made) Sweetwater was having a crazy sale on the miktek mpa201 a little while ago. The pre is supposed to be in the neve family sound with ami transformers for each mic and line level inputs... It was $999, now it's $1499 for 2 ch., xlr's for each ch. no eq, just impedance, mic/ instrument / line level, HPF, Gain, and output trim. Has anyone used this Pre ? The kit here has two seperate Carnhill input transformers for mic and line inputs. There is a toggle switch on the front to select between them. There is only one common output.

You buy the case separately. Dan from collectivecases.com offers the case you see in the video with the "N" logo. For all components (AML kit, case, Marconi knobs, Mouser parts) plus shipping it costs me $890.04 per preamp to build, and it seems to be taking me around 8 hours to build.

Smooove baby, smooove. Nice playing BGD! Thanks. Since your last comment, I just replaced the previous video with a new version with a new performance, less reverb, and no low frequency shelf. Let me know what you think.

Here is a simple test of my new hand-built 1073s with the pair of Soyuz Su-011 microphones that just arrived yesterday. Ain't no reason anyone can't make a record with this setup!

Scored an ebay deal on a pair of Soyuz su-011s. They arrived today and I did a bit of toying around with them, after I finished building another ez1073. Sounds good so far.
I'll take them to the studio this week and shoot them out with our km184s and some borrowed km84s. Will post some files once we get it done.
Km84s are a love of mine for bluegrass.

Bluegrass Dan, thanks for posting this. Any chance you would be able to to the same test but with a drum set ? Mono room mic or even snare / Kick . I would love to hear the difference on something with transients. I'm a bit backed up on work right now, but that's a great idea. Let me try to get to that when I can. Decided though, I'm gonna build another asap. Gotta stock up on incredibly high quality kit builds like this while they're available. There have been several good ones that are no longer offered for one reason or another.

I love KM84s for acoustic instruments. Has anyone compared the new Soyuz SU-11 to a KM84? Can anyone describe the tonal characteristics compared to the KM84 (or anything else for that matter)?
Thanks in advance.
Dan

I think it ended up being just north of $800.
