Big fan of the Ollo S5X. Excellent sonics, comfortable to wear for long stretches, and very affordable. They have an easy and generous demo policy. Try them out! New to me. But I could do a pair of these and a pair of Kalis. Anyhow why the 5s over the 4 for example. They seem to be billing the 5s for atmos, which I don’t do. Cheers, Geoff

I’ve got a set of Slate headphones with about an hour of use on them that if sell if you’re interested in going that route. Personally own AKG Q701, Sennheiser HD650 and 280, and the Slate, but my Bose QC35 V2 win. I do 90% of my work on them. The rest is between my PMC and Amphion monitors and the iPhone. I think I am staying away from the Slate idea for a bunch of reasons. Although the Audeze apparently have some way they analyse and adjust for your hearing. Good luck with that in my case. But thanks for the offer; much appreciated. Cheers, Geoff

Go for it, but demo headphones if possible? I ditched my monitors 3 years ago, we all calibrate to what we regularly monitor with. If you use sonarworks, you can by used calibrated headphones, like in Facebook marketplace. You can reconsider buying good monitors when you are more settled ? I do have an elderly pair of Heybrook HB1s sitting gathering dust. I have had them forty years now, and have listened to a lot of music through them. So I know them like the back of my hand. And, I suspect they would make far better monitors than any of the budget stuff currently available. No bass extension but, it is what it is. Maybe that’s my answer right there. Cheers, Geoff

I don’t know the interview but he produced the Joe Henry album Fuse. In 1999. Lanois mixed some of it, but I have become somewhat obsessed with the bass sound on the title track. I wouldn’t even know how to begin to try and get that sound. Flatwounds. After that I have no idea. Fuse
Thoughts? Cheers, Geoff Really, really enjoyed that track. That's an 'ashbory bass' if I've ever heard one. The growl on the first couple 3 pickup notes is the giveaway. And the deep sustain. Fairly unique instrument... I've flirted with buying one for years. Hadn't realized until I saw this a few minutes ago there are modern repros banging about. Nice look at one here, and what makes it what it is... acoustic / electric short scale fretless. Not a great player and the audios completely blown out but gets the point across... you'll either hear it... or 'ya won't. Overall that track kinda reminds me of Emmylou's Wrecking Ball... the overall space...depth... its so open & naked. And that big lush Lanois reverb. What WAS he using in those days?! There's some ashbory bass on that record too. Overall - doubling bass parts with two different instruments is fairly common. Sting was doing that w/ Hugh Padgham and the Police... legend has it Synchronicity is electric (P bass? spector?) doubled with upright. Not the song. The whole record. Its so obvious now when I listen to it. That's not all synth bass, and its not "effect bass" - like a TC spatializer. Not all of it. Interesting! I know Lanois was pretty deep into the H9000 for a while. Cheers, Geoff

For a bunch of reasons.
First, one of my monitors is acting up. It is making sputtering, motorboat kind of sounds and gets extremely hot to the touch. To the point I am concerned it might be a fire hazard. The working one does not do that. They weren’t terrific to start with. Event something or others. Not worth fixing.
Plus, I’m a renter and that’s unlikely to change in the near future. And my space is abominable. Yes, a bedroom. So there is a limit to how much I am able or willing to do on the room treatment end.
So, headphones? Am probably going to pick up a pair of Ath M50s just so I have something closed back for tracking.
Current best phones are Shure Shr940s but Iam willing to up my game there to something like midtier Audeze or the like if headphones seem like the best way to go.
Keep in mind this is mostly for me. I might mix some friends stuff, but little chance of any of this getting out in the wild. Plus I am almost 60. How well can I hear anyways?
So, all thoughts and opinions welcome.
Cheers, Geoff

I chose 8. That’s my max i/o but could add a couple more over spdif. So, up to 10.
I am usually a pretty low track count guy, so that’ll do me fine I think.

Maybe thumpy?
Anyhow, not yer Steinway etc.
Absent finding one on the local craigslist and humping it into your space, what do you like in the box?

Yeah I mentioned the Audioscape Vcomp in another thread. Their take on a Sta Level. Definitely a low mid thickening tone. Avert your eyes if you don’t want to see gobs of gr without discernable artifacts at least to these old ears.

I spy a Kurzweil Rumour in there. How do you like it?
Good eye! When I got it it was still back in the Adat days. I still think the plates and smaller rooms in particular sound decent, but it is limited to 48k so I am not sure I’m going to keep it. I dunno really. Cheers, Geoff

Nope. Just the one. Cheers, Geoff What’s you main usage case? Tbh I have done very little recording since I got it, am only kinda sorta getting back in the saddle. But during my hiatus I did buy some stuff, this being one of them. That said, vocals, bass. I have a pretty thin, reedy voice and it needs all the kelp I can give it, so the low mid thickness the V comp adds is welcome. Might not work on every voice though. Mmm kelp. And it can do quite a bit of gain reduction without getting too artifacty. But it definitely has a tone. And am sure it will be used on synth or vst stuff to add a bit of tube and transistor goodness even if not digging into the compression much if at all. Just running through it. Cheers, Geoff

My semi recent interface purchase. Antelope. Sounds fine. To me. But the routing just seems counter intuitive to me. Easy enough getting signals in and if I am just using the stereo outs. But once I start sending things out to hardware and back in, or using the spdif connections my brain just begins to hurt. Maybe it’s as much a Logic thing as an Antelope thing. I dunno.

Glad to see I am not the only one voting for the SM7. When I bought mine back in the 90s I was trying to decide between it and the RE20. At the time the RE20 seemed more popular, so wanting to be different I went with the Shure. Howd that work out?

Yeah I saw that. I really wanted Nfuse too…but I’m getting to the point where I’m buying shit just because it’s cheap and not because I need it. I think I am finally at the point where I am kinda done with eqs and compressors. I mean how many flavours of an La2a do I really need? I am mildly interested in the Tomo thing and the Dsm thing. They may bring something new but at this point, I think i am actually going to break my plugin compulsion. There are still a couple things I want. A phase alignment tool, although there are workarounds in Logic, a 2 bus tape machine maybe? I dunno. I look at all the PA stuff and I did pick up a few over the last few months, but out of the oodles I don’t have there’s not really anything exciting me at the moment. All that said, I do think the SB is worth picking up. Cheers, Geoff

@johnkenn , the SB is calling you. Maybe kcat too? Ah, I love spending other people's money. Cheers, Geoff You got me. I couldn't figure out what to get for the second plugin so I ended up getting the chopshop. I know that goes cheaper sometimes, but figured those were the only two really calling my name. Good choice. I really like the Chop Shop. Sometimes it’s all the eq you need. Cheers, Geoff
